About Us

Joanne (Jody) Brown is the primary practitioner with Authentic Being, offering treatments at her Strathmore, Alberta treatment studio.

She received her certification as an NLP Master Practitioner while attending training at the University of California — Santa Cruz. She was taught by Robert Dilts, Judith Delozier and Suzie Smith, all world-renowned leaders in Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Joanne received her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a Clinical Specialization from the University of Calgary in 2013. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Victoria. Joanne also obtained a Diploma in Criminology from Mount Royal College in Calgary in 1988, with further study at Simon Fraser University.

Having spent 13 years in law enforcement working in criminal intelligence and communications, Joanne has been able to apply her experiences and interests to provide a unique perspective for individuals interested in changing their thought patterns and routines.

Joanne has experience in supporting individuals and families victimized through elder abuse in addition to working with victims of domestic violence. She received training and education through both work experience and through Solicitor General training and seminars through the Calgary City Police. She also co-facilitated a support group for women having experienced trauma and various forms of abuse in their lives.  Joanne has received certification in the facilitation of critical incident debriefing and has been trained as a restorative justice facilitator (2015). In addition to her Hypnosis training in 2010, Joanne attended further training and certification through the Canadian Federation of Hypnosis as a Hypnotherapist (2014).

Joanne has been contracted by Homewood Health since 2015 for their Family and Employee Assistance Program (F-EAP) where she is committed to providing support for individuals and couples through both face-to-face and telephonic counselling.

During 2004 Joanne participated in the AACL (Alberta Association for Community Living) Leadership Program. She shared her personal experiences in a presentation to FSCD (Family Support for Children with Disabilities) government employees and was invited to attend focus groups and future planning initiatives for AACL. In addition, Joanne held the position of Special Needs Liaison on Parent Council within a Calgary Board of Education public school.  She also acted as a Parent Partner Facilitator for the F&ST (Families and Schools Together) program in 2007.

Her past volunteer experience has included work at the Calgary Young Offenders Centre, the Strathmore Youth Detention Centre, Woods Homes, AACL, the Calgary Board of Education and Renfrew Educational Services.

Joanne has had extensive experience in helping to support individuals with disabilities in both volunteer and work capacities. In the past she worked as a network facilitator for the Road Ahead Society and is a strong advocate for inclusion, having attended many conferences and leadership programs promoting the inclusion of those with disabilities in community programs, schools and society in general.  She has also completed a wide range of courses ranging from how to utilize sensory strategies in schools and motivational seminars to certificate courses on leadership and dealing with abusive behaviours and attitudes.

Earlier in life, Joanne’s training included certification as lifeguard, swim instructor and diving coach.
