Finding the right hotel in a big city like Paris is not always easy. Paris is an expensive city,  and finding the right hotel in the right place and at the best rate can be the factor that can make or break a good trip.  There are some 2000 hotels in Paris to choose from; About-France.com's Paris hotel guide is here to help you find one of them that suits your needs and your budget.

1. Luxury hotels in Paris:

► Paris hotels for really special occasions

If your trip is to mark a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, there are plenty of very luxurious hotels in Paris. Among the top five-star hotels in the city are seven renowned "Palace hotels", the most famous of which are the Crillon, on the Place de la Concorde, between the Louvre and the Champs Elysées; the Hotel Fouquet's, the Plaza-Athénée, and the Meurice. Don't expect to find rooms at less than 1000 € a night in any of these !  For similar quality at more "affordable" prices, you could try the Hotel Marignan-Champs-Elysées (photo above), or go for the classic French chateau experience at the exquisite Saint James Hotel, near the Champs Elysées, with its own Michelin starred restaurant. These hotels often have rooms for under 1000 € a night.
These are the Paris hotels where you may rub shoulders with the stars and the famous of this world.
Then, a bit more affordable, are the four-star hotels belonging to the major chains or independent. Many of the best hotels are situated in the chic quarters, close to the Champs Elysées or to the Eiffel tower.  But there is a large choice of luxury hotels all over Paris.

2. Quality hotels (four and three star):

paris hotelThere is a massive choice of four and three-star hotels in Paris, so choosing your hotel is really first a matter of determining which district or quarter of Paris you want to stay in, then selecting the place that best meets your requirements; you can choose from hundreds of independent establishments, or from the three or four star hotels run by the major  chains, such as Novotel     and Mercure  or Kyriad Prestige     brands.

OR...  Paris also offers plenty of choice in quality boutique hotels - small hotels with character and style.

3. Budget hotels in Paris

There are hundreds of budget hotels in Paris and in the suburbs;  if you want to book on line with major French  chains, check out the Ibis (two or three star), or the Formule 1 chains.  The general rule is that the further you get from the expensive quarters of central Paris, the cheaper budget hotel rates will be. In the central area, modern budget chain hotels are generally in the range of 100 Euros to 150 €uros a night for a double room, depending on location and amenities. In the suburbs, double rooms in modern budget chains  start at about 75 Euros, three star hotels can be found from 120 €.. Note that if a hotel in Paris offers very cheap prices, there is probably a reason; there are still a few cheap backpacker hotels in Paris, but if you want to stay in a tourist area, do not expect too much from places  offering rooms at less than 100 € a night in 2024,  don't expect too much in the way of space or amenities, and don't be surprised - with independent hotels - if the furniture is fairly basic and not too new.

Whereabouts to stay in Paris :

One way or another, it is useful to  weigh up the pros and cons of staying in central Paris, or staying further out from the center, or even in the suburbs.

Staying in Paris:  If you want to stay close to the main tourist attractions, check out our map of selected Paris hotels. This offers a choice of places to stay, from mid-range to luxury , that are conveniently located near the main tourist attractions. Choose hotels in the 1st, 2nd or the 8th arrondissement (quarter, district) to be close to the Louvre, Champs Elysées, Grand Palais, etc; choose a hotel in the 7th arrondissement to be near the Eiffel Tower or the Invalides. Prefer the 4th, 5th or 6th arrondissements if you want to be near the heart of the old city of Paris and the Latin Quarter.

Advantages of staying in Paris: access, time. If you are only in Paris for a short break, staying centrally will allow you to spend more time seeing and doing things, and less time in trains, buses or taxis.
Disadvantages: hotels near the tourist areas are generally quite expensive; cheaper hotels are often in less attractive areas of the city, far from the tourist sights and attractions, or else on the edge. And if you come to Paris by car, parking will be a major extra cost.

Staying outside Paris:  hotels in the suburbs

A short and varied list of well-reviewed small independent hotels, with car parking, and close to train stations (mostly within walking distance) can be found on the iHi Hotels near Paris website.

For travellers visiting France by car, and taking in Paris as part of a longer trip,
finding hotel accommodation outside of Paris, with on site parking,  is often preferable to driving into the city center, where many hotels do not have parking facilities - specially hotels in lower price categories.

General observations on hotels on the outskirts of Paris.

Advantages
: hotels tend to be cheaper, and rooms may be bigger. If you choose a hotel that is near a train station, access to central Paris can be relatively easy and quick.

If you are planning a visit to Versailles, you'd do well to take a hotel in the suburbs to the southwest of Paris, or in Versailles itself. If you are planning to visit Disneyland Paris, located in the outer suburbs at Marne la Vallée, then a hotel on the eastern side of Paris would be more useful. click for a choice of hotels at or near Marne la Vallée.

Disadvantages: check that the cheaper room cost is not offset by the extra travelling costs - though remember that it is advisable not to take your car into town. Also, if you stay in the suburbs, you'll have less time to enjoy Paris by night.
