Here are some frequently asked questions:


"Do I need to call the utilities for a locate" - In general, yes. You or your contractor should always 'call before you dig'.


"Do I need a building permit?" - Fences generally do not need a building permit. Decks, additions, etc... generally do. General landscaping and retaining walls (depending on height) do not.


"Do I have to put my fence on my own property?" - No. In general, fences are allowed on the property line. You can always install a fence on your own property if you choose to do so. Usually, fences that are installed between neighbours are a shared undertaking from both a design and cost perspective.


"How high can I build my fence?" - The quick answer here is 6' or 2m high. However, each municipality has its' own rules and regulations. Swimming pools, corner lots, fencing in front yards and other situations all have specific allowances. 


"Do I need my neighbours' permission to build a fence?" - Normally no. Usually, though, neighbours confer with each other with regard to fencing between properties. Courtesy prevails here.
