Calligraphy Classes with the BVCG

Workshop Registration Information
Do not postmark your registration prior to the registration start dates!

Non-members are welcome to register for an additional charge of $20 per workshop. If they join The Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild within a year, the membership fee will be reduced by $20 for the first year.

In most cases, registrations are welcome until one week before workshop commencement; however, classes fill quickly so we encourage you to enroll early to avoid disappointment. Non-members should check with our Workshop Registrar to confirm availability.

Full payment is required with your registration. No post dated cheques please. Send a separate cheque for each workshop. Make cheques payable to the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild. Your cheques will not be processed until the class is confirmed.

Fees are non-refundable, except in special circumstances.

No cell phones in class please.

Your personal contact information is used by the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild for the purposes of workshop correspondence and is not shared by the Guild with any other organization.

Please contact our Workshop Registrar for more information on class registration, or phone 403-271-8228 and leave a message.

Visit our Gallery to see artwork by members and students.

*Please note the change in the registration policy: We will be accepting registrations ANYTIME from this point and check date below for DEADLINE of REGISTRATIONS. This allows us to let our instructors know if their class has been cancelled due to lack of registrations with enough notice to be respectful.

Non-members are welcome for the extra charge of $20.00 per workshop. If they join the guild within a year, their first-year membership fee will be $15 not $35

Full payment is required to be enrolled in the class. No post dating please, however cheques will not be processed until classes are confirmed.

Please let Tara know whether you are a member or not, if you’d like a receipt and/or if you have suggestions for future classes.

If you haven’t visited Denis’ website – check out quillskill.com. We are thrilled to offer 4 days of workshops with Denis in Calgary as detailed below. Each script is based on the same principles of Denis’ italic analysis, but applied to two very different arch-forms. Those who do both classes will understand each script better from experiencing the other one, yet each can be an independent theme for those who are only able to take one of the classes. Also, those who attend both classes will gain a better understanding of italic in addition to two new scripts.
Note the experience level for both classes is intermediate to advanced. Advanced pen techniques are demonstrated in both scripts. Having said that, Denis says “there is no entrance exam, no final exam to graduate and all are welcome if they are enthusiastic even if not so experienced.” Denis makes time to see each student one to one as much as possible after each group demo and in these one to one sessions, he works with whatever level of the individual. All are welcome. If you have any questions about your experience level or the classes themselves please contact Thea Paul at paul.family@shaw.ca or 403 288 6526.

Denis Brown - "Celtic Hybrid"
Ancient Celtic half-uncial script is beautiful, but generally inappropriate for contemporary use. When a Celtic feel is appropriate, Denis generally uses a hybrid form, blending insular characteristics with a modern roman or italic.
We will look at principles of modernizing ancient forms and practice a hybrid between a Celtic and an italic script. The hand is appropriate for modern use where a Celtic feel is appropriate.
Saturday & Sunday, June 11 and 12, 2011 / 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Level: Intermediate to advanced.
$160 members / $180 non-members (There is 1 spot left, if you'd like to be put  on the waiting list, please contact Thea Paul - number on registration form)

Denis Brown - "Gothic Scripts / Batard (Cursive)"
The term GOTHIC encompasses a fairly wide range of styles, from static Texturas to fluid Bastarda cursives and modern Gothicized Italics and hybrids. We will focus more on a cursive style. This script features pen-angle manipulation and energetic 'flicks' of the pen to give a fresh and lively rhythm.
Monday & Tuesday, June 13 and 14, 2011 / 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Level: Intermediate to advanced.
$160 members / $180 non-members (There is 1 spot left, if you'd like to be put  on the waiting list, please contact Thea Paul - number on registration form)

Beginner Calligraphy

Beginner level lettering classes will be offered to teach you calligraphic terms, how to use the tools and which supplies you will "need"! Several different calligraphic hands will be offered. In classes you will look at spacing and basic principles and learn how to use analytical and rhythmic practice techniques that will help you in your ongoing calligraphic practice.

We will try small personal classes with great instructors to suit your interests.

If you would like to learn calligraphy or to improve your lettering in any hand you have already been working on, please contact the Workshop Registrar or call 403-271-8228 for more information.
