GSM (Global System for Mobile communications: originally from Groupe Special Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 82% of the global mobile market uses the standard GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories.Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessors in that both signalling and speech channels are digital, and thus is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication was easy to build into the system.

CDMA (Code division multiple access) is a channel access method utilized by various radio communication technologies. It should not be confused with the mobile phone standards called cdmaOne and CDMA2000 (which are often referred to as simply "CDMA"), that use CDMA as their underlying channel access methods. One of the basic concepts in data communication is the idea of allowing several transmitters to send information simultaneously over a single communication channel. This allows several users to share a bandwidth of frequencies. This concept is called multiplexing. CDMA employs spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where each transmitter is assigned a code) to allow multiple users to be multiplexed over the same physical channel. CDMA is a form of "spread-spectrum" signaling, since the modulated coded signal has a much higher data bandwidth than the data being communicated.
CDMA technology is shutdown in India. Reliance and Tata two large CDMA opertors have shut the CDMA business in India.

What is 2G ?
2G is current signaling, that is second generation of mobile service. This allows you to make basic phone calls, send SMS, Voice Mails and send receive basic emails.
Existing mobiles are capable of providing this service and service cost is cheap.
2G internet service on mobile is also named as GPRS.

What is 3G?
3G stands for Third Generation of Mobile Service. This will allow you to perform more on your mobile phone.

You need to buy Mobile handset which is capable of receiving 3G service. These phones are little costly.
You will also need to subscribe to 3G service for high bandwidth service. 3G service is not cheap and requires you to pay cost for high data transfer.

What is 4G?
4G stands for Fourth Generation of Mobile Service. This is today the fastest speed network you can ever have.
Commercial implementation of 4G standard goes into two categories, WiMAX (Advanced WiFi standards) & LTE (Long Term Evolution)
- This Ultra Boradband connectivity can be also used by Computer, Television & other Internet devices like XBox, PS3.
- 4G USB dongles can be used for high speed bandwidth on Laptops or Desktop computers.
- One can also use MiFi card like devices to consume 4G services and spread the same connection to multiple devices through local WiFi. JioFi router is such kind of 4G WiFi device.
You need to buy Mobile handset which is capable of receiving 4G service. Apple iPhone 4, 4s, 5,6,7,8,X Latest iPad & Many models of Samsung, HTC are capable of connecting to Fourth Generation Networks.
You will also need to subscribe to 4G service for high bandwidth service. Reliance Jio & Airtel are two big players in India offering 4G services in many circles.

What is 5G?
5G stands for Fifth Generation of Mobile Service. This is still at conceptual level and expected to be implemented by year 2020.
