Depending on your age, many of these songs may be familiar to you, even though none is less than 25 years old, and a few are considerably older than that. I hope you enjoy them all and go on to explore other works by their writers. Some, like Ian Tyson, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot, are household names. Others, like Tom T. Hall, Kate Long, and Mickey Newbury are a bit less well known.

As were most people my age, I was raised in a time when music, especially singing, was a part of everyday life. From folk music to pop, from show tunes to church choir, practically everyone sang. Before the advent of Rock and its spawn, most music was something that one could sing along with. People would leave shows, movies, and dances humming or singing the tunes they had just heard. And unlike a great deal of music being written today, many of these tunes have melodies, lyrics, and choruses that invite participation. Almost all of the songs in this collection fall into this category, and I hope you will make Pete Seeger proud and let your voices be heard, if only by yourself, if need be.
