Should A/c Accumulator Be Replaced?
#1
My A/C compressor needs replacing, as it been leaking slowly since last fall. The shop recommended that the accumulator/drier be replaced at the same time. Just wondering if this is worth it, or are they just trying to get a little extra money out of me?

TIA.

Is the accumulator the place where that special A/C mould grows? If so ... you might want to replace it - how much are they quoting anyway?

The drier is what takes the moisture out of the system. Its more like a filter with a desicant inside. Yes it should be replaced after a leak in the sealed system. Especialy after going a winter with a hole in the system.

They quoted me $595.00 to replace the compressor and drier. Since I figured you're halfway there when the compressor is off, I also asked about changing the timing belt (I'm at 180k), and they quoted me and additional $270.00. This is all labour, as I already have the parts.

Nope, not Ford, just the shop near where I work. He does good work, but he's a little pricey.

I'm probably going to take the plunge and do this myself. A buddy of mine has lots of experience with A/C work, so we should be OK.
