I created this website in 2006 to promote my tutoring. I have actually been helping students in math and engineering courses at University of Waterloo since 1996. I have tutored more than a thousand students in about two hundred courses. I tutor primarily undergrads, but I’ve tutored some Masters and PhD. students too! The tutoring is private and independent from the University. However, I am also a student; I hold a BA, a BASc in Mechanical Engineering, and I recently completed my MASc in Mechanical Engineering, all at University of Waterloo. I love to learn, I love to teach, and I will enable your success in mathematical thinking and physical reasoning!

What is tutoring?

Tutoring gives you advantage. Tutoring enables you to grow in knowledge and as a person. Tutoring will help you to achieve high marks and great success!

The sessions of tutoring are tailored to your needs. In a typical session, we spend time discussing material covered in class throughout the week, perhaps we review some important concepts and extend them to the new material. Often, a course-instructor presumes you have preliminary knowledge of facts which you might never actually have encountered or learned; I fill gaps in this knowledge when gaps exist. The sessions are guided by questions from class, homework assignments, and possible midterm and final questions. I gauge your understanding as we progress and focus on areas of weakness. The goal of the sessions is manifold but principally to bolster your understanding of the material and to ensure that you be able to do the problems expected to be solved in the assignments and in mid-term and final examinations.

I understand that marks are important, and that marks are generated by quizzes, submitted assignments, and examinations. Consequently, the primary focus is on successful preparation for these tasks. In my coverage of various topics, I try to strike a fine balance between results which must be memorized and results which should be understood from which other results are naturally derived. In this way, you will not feel overwhelmed by too much memorization, the mathematics will seem less arbitrary, and you will gain confidence in your understanding of the subject matter. My loftier goal is that you actually gain enjoyment of the courses and the material, and also that I instill confidence to deal with intellectual challenges long after you’ve discontinued your lessons with me and have entered the real world.

Fee Schedule

Tutoring costs 60$ per hour for individuals in a one-on-one session of tutoring. I strongly encourage groups of two or more, consequently, the hourly rate for each individual in a group of two is 30$ per hour, which I believe is a tremendous value. Individuals in a group of three pay 25$ per hour, which is also tremendous. Persons in a group of four or more pay 20$ per hour. For much larger groups, the rates are negotiable.

The rates are summarized in the table below.

I'd be remiss if I were not to mention that the hourly rate should not be the sole criterion by which one selects a tutor. A lower hourly rate often does not translate into lower total expenditure. Some tutors are able to accomplish in one hour what requires many hours of inferior tutors, hence the negation of the perceived benefit derived from the lower hourly rate they offer.
