Message from the Chair
With the wet weather upon us and Christmas fast approaching, it is important that we think about those less fortunate than ourselves. With the current financial turmoil, the demand for our services is increasing. Last year we helped 1000 women through 1500 dressings. We expect even more demand this coming year - indeed our numbers are up already.

We are so fortunate that we have such wonderful volunteers and donors who help Dress for Success Vancouver assist women facing challenges in our community gain employment. And getting a job is only the first hurdle. Keeping it is equally as difficult and critical to our clients’ ability to become self-sufficient and in a position to help themselves, their children, and their families.

We help clients retain their jobs through two programs, the first of which is an 18-month program of monthly training, mentoring, and peer support that we call our Professional Women’s Group. The second is the Career Centre, which provides access to computers and more focused seminars.

To continue to provide these services, and expand them to meet the expected increasing demand, we need more than clothing - we need monetary support. So, I encourage you to consider a thoughtful gift this season that doesn’t clutter peoples’ shelves and that supports women in our community. Please see the DFS Holiday Card notice in this newsletter.

To all of our supporters and clients, I hope that 2009 brings you success, good health, and happiness.

Brenda Benham

Corporate Challenge
The annual “Dress Me for Success” Corporate Challenge ended November 13 at the gorgeous Pacific Palisades Hotel in Vancouver with a fashion show, raffle prizes, and an auction hosted by CTV’s Keri Adams. The Corporate Challenge involved companies competing against each other to raise the most money by selling raffle tickets and collecting clothing donations.

Finalists competed in a scavenger hunt to find items of clothing hidden around the hotel and assemble a business-appropriate outfit to model for the judges. Prizes went to Ernst & Young and McNeil Nakamoto Recruitment Group, but everyone was a winner in this fun event (participants are listed in our “Thank You” column) which raised over $12,000 to support financially disadvantaged women in Vancouver.

Volunteer Profile - Sandy Sucloy
Sandy has been a member of Dress for Success Vancouver for more than four years. In April of 2005, he went through a career change after spending ten years in the mediation field. He enrolled in the Fashion Merchandising program at Vancouver Community College, where he realized he needed retail or merchandising experience to advance.

He contacted Dress for Success Vancouver after reading about them in the newspaper and inquired if there was anything he could do to help out and possibly gain some much needed merchandising experience. He has been a volunteer there ever since.

Sandy’s role is multi-fold, from organizing the warehouse and the famous ‘pink room’ to sorting clothing, merchandising the store, working with new volunteers, and helping out with numerous events like the PWG Christmas party and clothing drives. He takes great pride in the work that he does because he knows what a difference it makes in so many women’s lives.

In his off hours from Dress for Success Vancouver, Sandy takes care of an aging parent and applies his trade as a Merchandiser and Sales Rep at a local fine wine and ale store.

Thank you, Sandy!
