Exposure Control Plan

HRMT 4500 – Strategic Human Resources, the capstone course of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management required the completion of a Practicum. The practicum required students to seek a business with a need for the development of a program pertaining to an HR function. My practicum was completed at Teleflex Canada Inc a manufacturing company in Richmond BC. The HR department was in need of an Exposure Control Plan to protect employees from exposure to Designated Substances as part of their Occupational Health and Safety program. The completion of the Exposure Control Plan required a technical knowledge of WorkSafeBC’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and policies.

Managerial Accounting Budget Project

Managerial Accounting was easily one of the most difficult courses of Kwantlen’s HR Management Program, and the Budget Project was no different. Students were required to create a business plan and budget for a start up company. Completing the project required considerable time and research; it was a tremendous accomplishment and learning experience.

Training Seminar Group Project

The Return on Investment training program was developed in partnership with Gina Kastanis and Felix Wu  as part of the HRMT Employee Training and Development courses curriculum. The class was divided into groups and each group was assigned a chapter to teach to the class. Groups were encouraged to develop training programs building upon the lessons of previous groups and utilizing concepts learned throughout the course.

Our group was originally at a loss as to how we could create an engaging training program that successfully facilitates knowledge transfer of the chapter’s learning objectives, but after some serious braining storming the group was able to focus our efforts and come up with an appropriate training program that I was proud of.

The resulting training program was a game that divided the class into groups that were required to answer a number of questions and perform calculations on ROI. Correctly answering questions resulted in monopoly money rewards that diminished as each group answered the questions. Groups were able to pay for training from one of the facilitators or try to figure out the answers on their own. Our intent was to have the groups make ROI calculations and decisions pertaining to the purchase of training in order to attempt to maximize their profits. The training was well received and, though we encountered a few issues, successfully transferred knowledge as measured by an instructor provided quiz immediately after the lecture and at the start of the following class.

Arbitration Simulation Casebook

Labour Relations was one of the more interesting courses in the HR Management program, and it is an HR function that I seek to learn more about. The arbitration simulation was a group project that I completed with Emily Ortis and Gurinder Dahia, The project involved us being given a fictional arbitration case and assigned a to either the Management or Union team. We had to build our cases and casebooks in preparation for an arbitration simulation. The semester built up to the simulation, and we not only won our simulation, we received the top mark in the program on the casebook.

Kwantlen Mahara Pilot

Kwantlen’s mahara Pilot was implemented by the HR Management program’s faculty in order for students to place learning goals and store tools for use later in our studies and future careers. The pages are unpolished, but they more than served their purpose when it came time to completing the Strategic Human Resources Practicum.
