Waste Diversion / Recycling Programs

Mary Jean O'Donnell, Principal of MJ Waste Solutions, began her career in the solid waste industry, by designing and implementing an extensive recycling program for the University of British Columbia.  UBC has one of the highest diversion rates of any post-secondary institution in Canada.  UBC also rivals most large businesses in BC with the diversity of materials it diverts from landfill.  For more information on UBC's program please visit www.recycle.ubc.ca.

Zero Waste Planning

MJ Waste Solutions worked with the City of Nelson to develop the first municipal Zero Waste Action Plan in British Columbia.  The plan outlines steps that local government can take to maximize the quantity of materials that they divert from landfill through innovative solutions such as Resource Recovery Parks.  Zero Waste plans are the solid waste management plans of the future, providing economic development to communities through the diversion of resources.  To download the complete document please click on

MJ Waste Solutions also co-authored a "white paper" on implementation of Zero Waste for a corporate client.  This paper is now in the public domain and can be viewed by clicking on
