I’m a consultant, teacher, scholar, and advocate for environmental and sustainability communication that helps to nurture the planet rather than exploit it. I have been at the forefront of building the field of environmental communication since the 1990’s.

From 2011 to 2022, I was the founding Executive Director of the International Environmental Communication Association (IECA). Now I am focused on my consulting work on strategic communication as well as program and project evaluation.

I have a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from Queen’s University at Kingston. For many years, I wished I had studied something else, but in retrospect, the management skills I gained from the B.Comm. have been invaluable.

For my graduate work, I focused on environmental thought and communication, and earned Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Studies from York University in Toronto. There I was fortunate to work with John A. Livingston, Neil Evernden, Fred J. Fletcher and David V.J. Bell as well as many other fine faculty.

For 14 years I taught environmental studies and environmental communication at SUNY-ESF. Prior to that I taught at McMaster University and York University. I have also taught courses at Royal Roads University and the University of Puerto Rico.

My area of scholarly expertise is the role and impact of mediated communication in relation to cultural and ideological perspectives of nature, environmental policy, and sustainability. In other words, how media affect how humans see themselves and their relationships to the rest of the natural world, and the implications of those beliefs.

I was an editor, the founding web editor, and a contributing editor for the long-running Canadian environmental magazine Alternatives Journal until they moved to a digital first strategy. I was a founding member of the editorial board of the journal Environmental Communication.

I founded and Directed the Environmental Communication Network (ECN). Prior to its merger into the IECA, the ECN was the online hub for the environmental communication community. Before that, I also co-founded the Environmental Studies Association of Canada and Undercurrents: Journal of Critical Environmental Studies.
