Why Should I Care About Computer Viruses?

"Aren't viruses just marketing hype created by anti-virus software companies?" Many people who take this position spend huge amounts of time and effort trying to get their systems operational again after an unexpected infection and usually end up paying a professional to clean up the mess. Most of these people will lose data that they will never be able to replace.

Even when a virus is well known and virtually all anti-virus programs can detect and remove it, viruses spread because many people don't use anti-virus software and many of those who do own it do not keep it active, properly configured and updated.

What is a computer virus?

A computer virus is a program designed to spread itself by making copies of itself. Viruses can infect any type of executable code and not just program files that carry the .exe. extension. Some viruses infect the boot sector of floppy disks or the system sectors of hard drives. Other virus types can infect word processing and spreadsheet documents that make use of macros. Even HTML documents containing JavaScript or other types of executable code can spread viruses or other malicious code. Since all virus code must be executed to have any effect, files that the computer treats as data are safe. Just viewing picture or listening to a sound file will not cause a virus to infect your computer. Graphics and sound files with extensions like .gif, .jpg, .mp3 and .wav, won't infect your computer and neither will plain text files with the .txt extension. Virus code has to be in a form that the computer will actually execute.
