After graduating from University of Calgary with a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing Minor) in 1999, and a brief flirt with Nortel Networks, I have started working for Canadian Hydro Developers ( www.canhydro.com ) as a control systems specialist.
At Canadian Hydro (the best company I have ever worked for) I was exposed to various sides of the hydro and wind power business. My official position was titled "Control Systems Specialist" - as such I became intimately familiar with the inner workings of run-of-river hydroelectric power plants and somewhat familiar with controls for a reciprocal engine natural gas plant. I was
in charge of supporting, de-bugging and providing design input for plants in the capacity of 1.3 - 45MW.
However, as is often the case at a small company, I also got involved in wind power project development. I was involved in siting and erecting MET Towers, data collection and quality assurance and the regulatory approval process. I also became familiar with using WindFarm – software used for modeling wind power production and optimizing layout of wind farms.
In 2003, I took six months of sabbatical to travel to Afghanistan to take part in the humanitarian efforts there. After returning to Calgary, I started contracting for Canadian Hydro Developers as well as other companies – thus PB Power was born.
