History and Information

The league has been around since the Fall of 1998 and started out with having only four teams. As we are recreational, in its genesis, we saw young, dynamic teams who would stay and hone their skills before moving on to other leagues such as the Ottawa Carlelton Volleyball League for greater competition. For others, young and old, quite a few have been with us for many years, it has always been about having fun and being with friends - celebrating with a beverage after the match.

Joining our league is open to any person who can field a team if they go through the online registration process on the City of Ottawa website under recreation and culture.

We are continuing to schedule for the full year. A full 28 week season from September 13 to April 11using the ladder format for the A, B and C Divisions (a set number of games for each rotation) with every team guaranteed one playoff game.

Any individuals should leave their contact information along with their playing abilities; we will try then to connect the team captains with them to help fill out any short rosters.

Rules

We do provide certified officials and follow Ontario Volleyball Association rules but have added a few of our own to make the experience unique to Hintonburg. Here are the modifications

• Rosters for playoff eligible players are due by February 3, 2017 with each player having played a minimum of 12 matches

• Six players is best, however, in our league, you can play with less people on the court if circumstances leave you short: 6 players must include 2 members of the opposite sex - 5 players must include 1 member of the opposite sex - 4 players must also include 1 member of the opposite sex

• 3 Matches per night - every match counts as a single point.

• 5 Serve Rule - rather than have someone with a sensational serve that no one can return serve out a set, once a player has served 5 consecutive serves successfully for points, his/her team rotates one position so the next person in sequence on the same team continues serving

• No Kicking Rule - it is not soccer and the original intent of the "feet are in play" was not that we could kick the ball around, however, a foot or leg extended in the air or on the floor without a 'kicking motion' is a perfectly acceptable play on a ball

• Emergency Rotation - is permitted once per set, if a team is stuck in a rotation where in spite of their best or all else has failed, they can ask that all players on the court advance one spot in the rotation following whatever substitution patterns they have been using

• Both feet on your side of the court - the last time I checked, there were not any scouts in the stands watching us play and all of us have families and / or work to go to the next day, so let us try to keep our ankles healthy ( accidents will happen of course ) so if you cross the line and are in a position to contact another player, it will be called

• Time outs - in the interest of more time spent playing, both teams still get two time outs per set but they are shortened to 30 seconds instead of 1 minute

• Just a point of interest, it is fairly regular to have people stop and retie their shoes (occasionally a delay tactic but usually not), here is a website that will tell you how to forget everything you learned when you were five about tying your shoes and show you how to do it so they don't come untied
