How do I remove a coffee stain from my carpet?”
Act immediately. You will have better success wet than if you let it dry out.
- Blot up with a clean cloth.
- Keep blotting with cool water and ivory liquid and clean white cloths until transfer stops.
- Rinse with water and vinegar (10-1)
Ammonia will set stains on wool and silk, but may help removal from other fabrics.
“I knocked over the candle in the living room. How do I take that wax out?”
- Spray water over wax at about a 4-inch radius.
- Place a wet white cloth over the wax, and use a warm (not hot) iron to melt it out.
- Don’t touch the iron to the carpet. (Unless you want melted carpet fibers.)
- Blot remaining wax with small amount of mineral spirits.
“My nose began to bleed, and some got on the carpet. What do I use to get it out?”
Keep the stain wet. Dry blood is much harder to get out. Do not use any heat.
- Blot up any fresh blood, then blot with salt water.
- Spray with a water ammonia solution and blot up.
- Rinse with water and blot dry. (Oxyclean may also be used, but be careful of dye loss.)
“The party was great, but we got red wine on the carpet. Can it come out?”
Red wine stains can be really tough, but follow these steps and you should be OK.
- If the spill is fresh, blot with a white terry cloth towel or clean sponge.
- Spray with 1 tsp. Ivory Liquid in 1 cup of water; knead gently with finger or soft brush and blot.
- Spray with clear, fresh water and blot again with terry towel.
- Cover the area with a generous layer of table salt; leave overnight, then vacuum up in the morning.

(Try First) Once red wine is spilled, pour white wine on it. You’ll be surprised at the result.
“Why do spots return after I spot-clean them myself?”
The “sticky stuff” that caused the original spot hasn’t been completely removed. The cleaning agent may not have been rinsed out, once the carpet appeared clean.
- Spray on just a little carpet spotter and massage with your fingers or a soft cloth.
- Then, be sure to blot out as much of the dirt as possible with a clean, terry cloth towel.
- Next, spray the area with clean water with two tablespoons of white vinegar added.
- Blot once again with a clean cloth.
“How can I prevent matter areas in my carpet?”
Just use a Carpet Groomer (carpet rake) before your vacuum.
- It lets the vacuum easily remove more soil by lifting and separating each tuft for better air flow and suction.
- Frequent raking helps prevent matting from occurring in heavy traffic areas. Carpet fibers never have the chance to flatten and pack down.
