Welcome to the Chapel of St. Barnabas!

Anglican Patrimony within the Catholic Communion

St. Barnabas was a companion of St. Paul in the early apostolic ministry of the Church (cf. Acts 4:36-37; 9:26-27; 11:22-30; 12:25 - 15:40; I Cor. 9:6; Galatians 2). He was highly regarded for his preaching and the effectiveness of his witness, so his shield features an open Bible, presenting "the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ", surrounded by three stones, recalling the manner of his martyrdom.

Not every Christian will be put to death for his or her faith, i.e. a literal "martyrdom"; but all are called to give their lives in witness to the Gospel, as "living sacrifices" (c.f. Romans 12:1). The Greek "martus/marturos" translates as "witness" in English, and is the root of the word "martyr". Our pattern of worship is that set out in the Book of Common Prayer (Canada 1962), a book which encourages the faithful to follow, not just Sunday worship, but a daily round of prayer and Bible reading, "that we show forth Thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to Thy service, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days".

INTO THE WILDERNESS

Into the wilderness, Lord, we will go, 'Though it be forty days, forty years,    All our lives;                                                  We will go, for You call us,                    Where You lead we will follow;            Into the wilderness, Lord, we will go.

Into the shadows, Lord, we will go,  'Though our courage nay fail us;                At the touch of Your hand                         We will go, for You call us,                    Where You lead we will follow;            Into the wilderness, Lord, we will go.

Into the new day, Lord, we will go, 'Though it mean losing all that we know, Or we prize;                                                  We will go, for You call us,                    Where You lead we will follow;            Into the wilderness, Lord, we will go.
