About the Artist

Artist Michelle Prosek creates the design for each piece of jewellery, cuts dichroic glass to assemble the piece, and then fuses the many layers in Êa 1500 F kiln. The piece is then cooled for approximately 12 hours, after which it is then taken to a grinder in order to perfect the edges of the piece and correct any flaws that may have happened during the first firing. Then, the piece is fired again to produce a high polish so that it can be made into the stunning beaded necklace, earrings, pin Êor bracelet that is available through the Starfire Studios website.

What is dichroic glass?

Dichroic means having more than one colour, especially when viewed from different angles. Dichroic glass makes use of space industry technology in which the glass to be coated is carefully cleaned, then coated with metal oxides such as titanium, silicon, or magnesium using an electron beam (laser). The glass becomes evenly coated with many thin layers of the oxide, and the resulting colour is determined by the amount of oxide used. Dichroic coatings create an interference effect similar to the iridescence found in nature's fire opal, dragonfly wings and hummingbird feathers.
