Odawa oral tradition states that
the beaver population originated in Wikwemikong (Smith) Bay and migrated across
Canada. Encompassing the entire eastern peninsula of Manitoulin Island, Wikwemikong
also has land holdings on the north shore near Killarney Provincial Park (Point
Grondine). The total reserve area is 55,781.1 hectares.
The main settlement of the Wikwemikong
Unceded Indian Reserve is on Wikwemikong(Smith) Bay. The village of Wikwemikong
is the first permanent settlement on Manitoulin Island and has a rich history
and culture.
Our population consists of three
different tribes, the Ojibway (Faith Keepers), Odawa (Traders) and Pottawatomi
(Fire Keepers). This alliance is known as the Three Fires Confederacy. |
