wildlife:

College Park, like most of Port Moody borders upon forests whose Eco-systems include several larger animals commonly spotted in urban areas:

Here are some links to aid residents in coping with and understanding the wildlife we co-exist with:

Coyotes are a common sight in many areas including College Park. Below is a link to an excellent web site about coyotes:

Bears are also common in many areas including College Park. Following is an excellent resource for co-existing with bears and avoiding human bear conflicts. Please note that in 2016 several residents of the North shore reported bears breaking into their vehicles while parked outside with food in the vehicle. This link also details other common species of animals such as deer which are frequently seen along the west border of College Park:

The Chafer Beetle is a relative newcomer and is spreading across the Lower Mainland quickly. The City of Port Moody and GVRD have programs in place to raise awareness of this issue and some help for homeowners if your lawn is infested

Things you can do to help yourself:

o Improve your home security

- A substantial number of burglaries are committed by non-professionals who rely on easy entry to your home. To reduce the risk, ask yourself a few simple questions:

2. Are there 1" deadbolts installed on all exterior doors?

3. Do you have secondary locks on all windows rather than just simple catches provided by the builder or manufacturer?

4. Do you know where all the keys are to your home and office?

5. When you leave home, even for a short time, do you lock all the doors and windows, including any outside shed or garage?

o Burglars don't like to be seen

- Make your home look and sound occupied when you are away.

- Leave lights on at night; use timers to your advantage.

o Report Suspicious Activities

Consider someone coming into your area to commit a crime.

- Unfamiliar persons loitering in your neighbourhood

- Slow moving vehicles that circle the block or unfamiliar parked vehicles....especially if someone remains in them.

- Unusual noises, screams, glass breaking, barking dogs, etc.

- Persons going from door to door. (Especially back doors)

- Persons looking in parked cars.

*Don't assume someone else has called the police...three calls received are better than no calls at all.

Be responsible - As a member of the community, your responsibility for its protection and safety does not end at your property line. No one can guard themselves and their property all the time.....neighbours need each other.
