Cane Cutters Relief

Dec. 10 – 17, 2005

outreach trip to the cane cutters

Twenty-two (22) eager Ontarions originating from London to Whitby got thrown together as a group for a trip to San Pedro de Macoris and Consuelo regions.  During the busy week, we visited 5 bateyes, Santo Domingo (the Lighthouse, Cathedral and a barrio walk-about), the Grey Sisters and Fr. Christopher Hartley in Los Llanos parish as well as his new hospital in San Pedro.

The group included 8 children from 2 families.  Our ages ranged from 5 to 55.  All 8 children were a joy to have on the trip and added a wonderful dimension for the rest of the group.

Special thanks to Abel, our guide for the week, Ané, our driver for the week, Sisters Susan and Catherine of the Grey Sisters for their hospitality, Rosendo for his help in preparations and Fr. Christopher for taking a ˝ day out of his busy schedule to meet with us.  The barrio school in San Pedro de Macoris where we stayed, Centro Integral Materno Infantil, was outstanding.  Thank you to our hosts, Dr. Mercedes and family, and your fantastic cook.
