Head of Chicago teachers union: Contract far off

CHICAGO (AP) — The president of the Chicago public school teachers union says negotiations with the school district aren't close to being resolved and a new contract is a ways off.

At a school board meeting Wednesday, Karen Lewis told board members that even after 45 negotiating sessions, "we are still pretty far apart."

Not only that, but Lewis says she's heard about problems with the way the schools that opened last week are implementing a longer school day. Before the two sides reached an interim agreement on the longer school day the issue was considered the biggest sticking point in contract negotiations.

But district spokeswoman Becky Carroll says there have been no complaints made about the way the longer school day is being carried out from either the schools or the union.
