Ontario is one of Canada's 13 provinces and territories, located in east-central Canada that borders the U.S. and the Great Lakes. Ontario is home to Canada's capital city, Ottawa, and the nation's most populated city, Toronto, which is also the provincial capital. Ontario is Canada's most populous province, with nearly 40% of the country's population. The majority of the population is highly urbanized and concentrated in large and medium-sized cities. Prior to the European arrival in the 17th century, the land mass that would become Ontario was originally inhabited by sever first nations people, primarily Algonquian and Iroquoian. The French were the first Europeans to explore the area in the early 17th century, with English arriving years later in Hudson Bay. Ontario was officially formed as a Province on July 1st, 1867 as a result of the British North America Act. Like Canada, the official languages for Ontario is English and French, with English being the de facto official language.
