Today I welcome author Jason Mowbray to my blog to discuss his book Emotional Turmoil.

Tell us a bit about yourself.  

I am married to an amazing woman.I have four boys ages 22, 19,13, and 10. My family means everything to me and are the center of my life.

Where were you born and where do you call home?

I was born in the North of England, I currently live just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

What or who inspired you to start writing? 

Writing is something that I have always enjoyed. Ever since I was a little boy, I dreamed of being a famous author.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Although I have been writing for years as a hobby, I really never thought of myself as a writer. It was more of a pass time and something I just enjoyed doing. It is only recently I considered myself a writer.

How much of yourself, your personality or your experiences, is in your books?

Although most of my writing is fictional, I do incorporate a certain amount of my own persona into many of my characters. Many of the places described in my writing are places I’ve been to or lived. My latest book, Emotional Turmoil is filled with places where I grew up. In fact the climax of the book is in a small Village in the north of England that is very dear to me.

Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your next book? 

I have started my next project. In fact I have two on the go. The first is another thriller type of book that I’m hoping will prove to be even more disturbing than Emotional Turmoil. My second project is a non fiction book that I’m writing with my eldest son on a topic that is very sensitive. We are writing it in the hopes of helping other families in similar situations to help them along their journey. The topic is under wrap until the release, so you’ll have to wait and see.

What is the best advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing) 

The best advice I have been given, and I am happy to pass along is never give up on your dreams. If writing is your passion then do it. If I never make a penny writing it will worth it because I love it, and I love getting reviews from people who read my work.

What is the best thing about being a writer? The worst?

The best thing about being a writer is in my world I can do anything and be anything I want to be. I can create worlds, places and people. The hero is who I want it to be. The worst thing about writing is not having enough time in the day, to get all of my ideas out of my brain and onto my laptop.

What fuels you as an author to continue to write?

My writing is fuelled by passion. I love what I do, and I can’t get enough of it. My free time is precious and writing is a key part of it.

How do you conceive your plot ideas? 

My ideas are conceived in the pits of my mind. People as a rule are generally somewhat reserved in real life. When I write I try to take away those filters and stay true to the inner thoughts that most people would be embarrassed to have anyone know they even crossed their mind. My writing style is usually focussed on the inner core of the person, going so deep that I am peircing at their actual soul.

Please tell us about your current release. 

My current release is a psychological thriller that takes you deep into the mind of Maurich. A man who is plagued with horrific nightmares of a tormented little boy named Charlie.  Maurich’s life is filled with torment from early on as his parents took him to Doctors and psychologists to try and stop his night terrors and horrific dreams. As a young adult Maurich was well adjusted and happy with his life. That is until tragedy struck and brought him to his knees, and once again the nightmares returned.

What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration was simply to get my thoughts out. I feel like I have so much to offer, and am excited to share it with others.

How did you come up with the title?

The title of my book is something that I struggled with for a while. In the end Emotional Turmoil seemed appropriate based on the struggles of the main character.

Did you base any of your characters on real people?

None of my characters are based on real people. My personality does shine through each character to a certain degree. My favorite character in the book is Maurich. He’s just such a great down to earth guy and although he has had some terrible things happen to him in his life, he always manages to bounce back and stay strong.

What was the most difficult thing/scene to write in this story?

I think the most difficult scene to write was the ending. There was so many possibilities and I could have gone in so many different directions.

Did the story turn out the way you planned from the beginning? If not, what change happened that you didn’t expect?

I don’t think my story turned out the way I planned it to. As you you start to write more and more ideas are born. It’s like the book takes on a life of its own, and even I don’t know as the author what the ending is going to be until I’ve put it down on paper.

 Is there a specific place in the house (or out of the house) that you like to write? 

Finding time for me can be an issue. I will write whenever and wherever I can. I’ll write at the kitchen table or on the sofa while my family is watching TV or even in bed while everyone else in the house is sleeping.

Do you have a specific snack that you have with you when you write?

I love to sit and have a nice hot cup of coffee while I write. Starbucks is always my first choice, but in a pinch as long as there is caffeine I’m good.

About the Author

I have always had a passion for writing fiction and short stories. I am originally from the North of England and currently live in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. I love to travel and incorporates a lot of my life experience into my writing style. Although my characters are completely fictional I always have real life experiences that are apart of many of the scenes and hero’s and villains in my books. I love to leave my readers guessing as to what is real and what is fiction.
