Early Writing

It has been said that it is useful to write poetry in one's youth, the better to write prose in later life. Here are samples.

Fine Press

In the mid-1970s I got to know Gerald Giampa of Vancouver's Cobblestone Press. Gerald and I published three "broadside" first editions of individual poems. They were meant to be folded but were rather precious and fragile in that condition. They could alternatively be framed and displayed on a wall, although that requires two copies since unlike traditional broadsides these were printed on two sides. I adopted the name Sun Stone House for these publications. The three were my own Alchemical Treatise, Karl Siegler's translation of Rilke's Sonnet to Orpheus II,XV, and Robin Blaser's Harp Trees - a poem which I found among a collection of manuscripts Robin had donated to a good cause. I considered publishing a fourth. Allen Ginsberg sent me a translation he had done together with Andre Vosnesensky of Andre's Silent Tingling but money was short and time moved on. The poem was published elsewhere. The photo gallery is here.
