Land Acknowledgement

VWAT Family Services is located in Toronto, also known as Tkaronto, along Garrison Creek south of Davenport Road, part of the Carrying Place. Our organization acknowledges that we are on the land of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, the Chippewa and Wendat peoples. Tkaronto is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Our location is covered by Treaty 13. We respectfully thank these Nations and people for stewarding this land.

Toronto itself is a word that originates from the Mohawk word “Tkaronto,” meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing,” which is said to refer to the wooden stakes that were used as fishing weirs in the narrows of local river systems by the Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. Davenport and Dupont are prominent streets that many of us travel. What many of us do not know is that they were built upon some of the original portage trails used by Indigenous peoples for many thousands of years.

We know that Indigenous Peoples have always been the protectors of all lands. We are committing to acting in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples.
