Ghana's President John Evans Atta-Mills dies at 68 By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB The President of Ghana, John Evans Fiifi AttaMills died on Tuesday afternoon at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. His shocking death came only three days after celebrating his 68th birthday on a low key with orphans in Accra. He is said to have died from an acute cardiac arrest. The death of the President was announced in a statement released from from the Presidency by the Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman. In it he said: “it is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana - His Excellency, John Evans Atta Mills.”

America after what his aides called “a routine check-up with his doctors”. On the day of his return, the President jogged on the tarmac towards the VIP Lounge at the Kotoka International Airport jokingly challenging the media and on-lookers to see how “fit” he was. This follows earlier rumours before he left for the United States that he was “dead”. To prove that he was “fit”, President Mills went round commissioning projects across the country. He recently indicated his preparedness to contest the 2012 General Elections There were reports on the social media before his departure that he had passed away.

“The death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon while receiving medical attention while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours ago.” This makes him the first President since Ghana’s independence to have died while in office. Mills won the Presidency on his third attempt in the 2008 general elections in close run-off election on December 28th, 2008 and took office as the 3rd President of the 4th Republic on January 7, 2009. Rumors of President Mills failing health had been widely reported in Ghana for months and almost throughout his three and half years as President. He recently returned from the United States of

Statements from World Leaders Obama pays tribute to Mills It was with great regret that I learned of the passing of President John Evans Atta Mills of Ghana. I will always remember my trip to Ghana in 2009, and the hospitality that President Mills and the people of Ghana showed to me, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and our entire delegation. I was also pleased to host President Mills in the Oval Office earlier this year.

President Mills tirelessly worked to improve the lives of the Ghanaian people. He helped promote economic growth in Ghana in the midst of challenging global circumstances and strengthened Ghana’s strong tradition of democracy. Under his leadership, the United States and Ghana deepened our partnership in the promotion of good governance and economic de-

velopment. He was also a strong advocate for human rights and for the fair treatment of all Ghanaians. On behalf of the American people, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the people of Ghana, and reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between our democracies that President Mills helped to strengthen. White House

Kufuor mourns the death of President Mills “I am deeply shocked and saddened at the passing away of President John Evans Atta Mills, Third President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” former President John Agyekum Kufour has said. A statement issued in Accra on Wednesday by

former President Kufour said it was a great loss to Ghana and the whole nation. Former President Kufour said: “My heart goes out to his wife, Naadu, his immediate family, and the rest of the nation.” He urged all Ghanaians to hold themselves together

as one people in this time of grief and let the common love for the country and humanity guide them. “On behalf of my wife, and the entire family, I pray that God grant former President Mills him a peaceful resting place,” he added. GNA

the office of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Kimoon and signed by his spokesperson. The statement said, “The Secretary-General is saddened by the death of H.E. John Atta Mills, President of the Republic of Ghana. “He offers his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to the

Government and people of Ghana.” It also said, “President Mills will be remembered for his statesmanship and years of dedicated service to his country. The President assures the

people of Ghana of the sympathy and solidarity of the people of Nigeria as they mourn late President Mills who did his best during his tenure to carry forward the process of democratic consolidation and socio-economic development in Ghana. He prays that God Almighty will grant the late President’s soul eternal rest and bless his successor with the fortitude and

wisdom he will need to keep Ghana firmly on the path of peace, stability and progress. It is President Jonathan’s hope and expectation that the excellent relationship which existed between Nigeria and Ghana during President Mill’s tenure will continue to be strengthened under the new leadership in Ghana in the mutual interest of both countries.

“Under President Mills’ stewardship, Ghana experienced unprecedented economic growth and prosperity and cemented its reputation as a model of democracy and stability within Africa. “Canada and Ghana have been partners in development since 1957. Under President Mills’ leadership, the ties between our two countries deepened

even further as a result of our common goals of promoting improved governance and respect for human rights. “In November 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper met President Mills during his visit to Ottawa. President Mills was a friend to Canada and will be remembered as a true leader.”

President Zuma of South Africa pays tribute to late Ghana leader Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday hailed Ghana’s late president John Atta Mills for working to strengthen relations between the two countries. “South Africa and Ghana enjoy strong relations at both the bilateral and mul-

tilateral levels, and under President Mills’s leadership, we saw genuine efforts aimed at deepening the historical relations between our two nations,” he said. “Our hearts and prayers are with the family of President Atta Mills as

well as the government and the people of Ghana during this difficult time of mourning the departure of their leader.” The 68-year-old Mills died suddenly on Tuesday. He had recently been to the United States for medical treatment.

PM David Cameron of UK pays tribute to Ghana president Prime Minister David Cameron has said he was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Ghanaian president John Atta Mills at the age of 68. Mills, who ran three times for president before being elected in the closest vote in Ghana’s history on a platform vowing to reform the west African country, died this afternoon at the

37th Military Hospital in Accra. He was poised to seek reelection this year. As yet, there are no details about the cause of his death. Mr Cameron paid tribute to the politician, describing him as a “tireless defender of democracy”. He said: “I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of President

Mills earlier. “President Mills was a tireless defender of democracy in west Africa and across the continent, and he will be greatly missed. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family, and all the Ghanaian people on this difficult day.” wexfordpeople

Amnesty International express sympathy The Amnesty International has expressed its condolences to the family of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the government and the people of Ghana upon receiving the sad news of his death. A statement issued by the Director for Amnesty International, Mr Lawrence Amesu and copied to Ghana News Agency in Accra, said Professor J.E. Atta Mills had a listening ear, particularly to

human rights issues and efforts to promote human rights and democracy not only in Ghana but the whole of Africa. It said the former President was a great leader, a democrat and someone “we at Amnesty International and indeed all human right activists have identified as a great advocate for human rights”. The statement expressed the hope that the immediate and future successors

would continue to carry his good work in promoting development and human rights in Ghana and Africa. It urged all Ghanaians to ensure that total peace prevailed from now, during and after the pending elections in the country since it was the only reward Ghanaians could give Prof Atta Mills “as he passed on from this world”.

May His Soul Rest In Perfect Peace

Paying Tribute to President John Evans Attah Mills Ghana and the world were hit with the shocking news of the death of the President of the nation, Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills at the age of 68 on Tuesday July 24, 2012. Although the sudden announcement of his death was shocking, it had been known for sometime that the President had some serious health issues which were constantly played down by his inner circle. Prof. Atta Mills was the third President of the fourth Republic of Ghana and the eleventh Head of State of Ghana’s since its independence in 1957. Funeral arrangements for the late President have been announced but as the nation prepares to say a final farewell to its fallen leader, we wish to pay special tribute to him for playing his part in building our nation. History will pass judgement one day on what legacy President Atta Mills left on the Ghanaian political landscape but one thing is clear. Apart from his short, three-and-a half year Presidency which faced an uphill task from its inception due to all kinds of factors including internal party conflicts, the late Prof. Attah Mills had an impressive record and accomplishment as a public servant. He had a solid academic record having obtained a Doctoral Degree in law at the very young age of 27. He served in various capacities and positions in the public service notable among which was his over 25 years service as a Law Professor at Ghana’s Premier University, the University of Ghana, Legon, a Revenue Commissioner for many years and a Vice President of the Republic for four years. The man contributed his fair share to the building of the Ghanaian nation. His success in politics will be judged by history in due course, but no matter the shortcomings that were recorded during his administration at the Presidency, Ghanaians are unanimous in their assessment and impression of Professor Attah Mills as a peace-loving gentleman. He faced a lot of challenges and provocations even within his own inner circle but he remained resolute in his avowed mission of ensuring peace in the nation. The late President played his part and contributed his fair share to the building of the nation that he loved. Perhaps he was not really cut for the rough and tumble terrain of politics. But he soldiered on and contributed what he could to the stability of the nation. It is also gratifying to note the smooth transition that took place hours after his death with the mantle of power passing to his Vice President, John Dramani Mahama who has now assumed the reigns of power and leadership of Ghana as its 4th President of the 4th Republic. While we say farewell to Prof. Attah Mills, we wish to caution the new President Mahama to be wary of those negative and foul-mouthed aides that surrounded the late President. President Mahama should always keep in mind that he assumed the highest office in the land by the power of the Constitution of the Republic, the highest authority of the land. He rules on behalf of all the people of Ghana and his actions should be seen to be so. Goodbye Professor Atta Mills. May God keep your soul in perfect peace. Welcome President Mahama. We shall have more opportunities to chat with you in due course.

Opinion/ Commentary Playing Politics with the health of our Political Leaders By: Dr. Michael Baffoe & Kwabena Akuoko Ghanaians all over world and friends of Ghana were shocked to hear the news of the death of President John Evans Atta Mills at a relatively young age of 68. Although the news of his passing was announced as coming after only “a short illness”, many people who have been closely monitoring events on the Ghanaian political scene were neither “shocked” nor “surprised”. Many people in Ghana have been appalled by the overpoliticization of the late President’s illness which blinded the people around him to his health limitations that eventually caused his death. Any objective and honest person who has watched President Mills closely or even listened to his speeches over the past two years knew and concluded that something was seriously not well with the President’s health. Yet, his aides decided that the health of the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Father of the Nation, was nobody’s business. In the last few weeks the President’s speech was blurred and it had a serious nasal tone to it. It became obvious that this was a clear case of a “dead man walking”. However, the political spin doctors and propaganda aides around the Presidency were ready to devour and pounce on anybody that dared raise issue with the health of President Mills. It became so bad that the Deputy Minister of Information, who goes by the name of Samuel OkudzetoAblakwa, publicly cursed the main opposition political party in Ghana, the NPP, accusing them of being behind earlier rumours in June that the President had died. Around the same time that rumours were swirling around in late June on the deteriorating health of

the President, a Member of Parliament for Kwabre West in the Ashanti Region, Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, former Ashanti Regional Minister, who belonged to the NPP died. Okudzeto-Ablakwa publicly suggested that the death of the MP was “God’s punishment” to the NPP for “spreading rumours” about the President’s death. He went further to warn that anytime the NPP talks about the President’s health, one of their members will die. He then posed a silly question: “how many of them will die before they stop talking about the health of President Mills?” This was gutter politics and act of sinking low politically, to say the least. What the political spin doctors and propaganda messengers around our political leaders need to know is that once a person has been elected into a national leadership position, his welfare is important to all the citizens of the country and not only to those of his/her political party. These national leaders include leaders of major political parties, military and police leaders and even national student leaders. Since the official duties of these national leaders have relevance to the destiny of the nation, the citizens of the country have the right to know their health status at all times. If we were honest in our actions, many of the people that were close to President Mills should be investigated for the careless and callous roles they played about his health condition. They obviously knew that he could not continue to work, but they virtually forced the late President to stay in office to execute official duties at the Castle. And where were the medical officers responsible for monitoring President Mills’ health? Did they give sound and

professional medical advice that was ignored by his aides? And what did the then Vice President, now President John Mahama know and do? Was he complicit to the constant denials of the health problems of the late President? Why was nobody courageous and honest enough to have suggested or strongly advised the President to resign earlier and hand over to his Vice to execute the rest of his mandate while he received proper medical attention and rested? These and so many other questions are begging for answers and we do not need to sweep them under the carpet and play politics as usual with them. We demand that non-partisan investigations be launched into the health issues of the late President since he assumed office in January 2009 till his unfortunate demise in July 2012. We need to open a serious national debate and discussions in Ghana now on the health status of our leaders. It may not even be too much asking that part of the requirements for seeking the Presidency of the nation should be for all candidates to file current certified medical certificates authenticating their health status. That way the whole nation can keep on top of the health issues surrounding their leaders. They do not have to be subjected to the trash talk and propaganda that is churned out by inexperienced partisan political aides that brought us to the unfortunate event of July 24, 2012 with the demise of President Mills. We sincerely hope that the painful lessons from ex-President Mill’s death will guide the nation and teach us to act honestly, openly and with the supreme interest of the nation as our only guide at all times.

Ghana's President John Evans Atta-Mills dies at 68 cont'd from pg. 1

President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills was born on July 21st, 1944, at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana and hails from Ekumfi Otuam in the Mfantsiman East Constituency of the Central Region. He attended Achimota Secondary School, where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level in 1963. He moved on to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he received a Bachelor’s degree and professional certificate in Law (1967). While earning a PhD in Law from the prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, John Evans Atta Mills was selected as a Fulbright scholar at the equally prestigious Stanford Law School in the United States of America. At age 27, he was awarded his PhD after successfully defending his doctoral thesis in the area of taxation and economic development. Prof. Mills’ first formal teaching assignment was as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana, Legon where he spent close to twenty five years imparting knowledge (as well as other institutions of higher learning) rising from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer then to Associate Professor.

His contribution to intellectual development is remarkable having served on numerous Boards and Committees. During the almost 30 years of teaching and researching Prof. Mills served as a visiting lecturer and professor at a number of educational institutions worldwide and presented research papers at symposiums and conferences throughout the world. (An inter-faculty lecture published by the University of Ghana). Tributes have poured in from world leaders to console the people of Ghana on the death of President Atta Mills. US President Barack Obama paid tribute to President John Atta Mills hailing him as a “strong advocate” for human rights and a tireless champion of his people. “It was with great regret that I learned of the passing of President John Evans Atta Mills of Ghana,”

Obama said, in a White House statement. “I will always remember my trip to Ghana in 2009, and the hospitality that President Mills and the people of Ghana showed to me, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and our entire delegation,” he said, also recalling Mills’ US visit this year. “President Mills tirelessly worked to improve the lives of the Ghanaian people. President Mahama not absolved from Mills’ Failures With barely less than five months to the 2012 election, Ghanaians are regrettably coming to terms that the many lofty promises of jobs and wealth made to them by what started as a MillsMahama government was nothing more than propaganda. Now led by former vice president John Dramani Mahama as a result of former President Mills’ demise, the NDC still believes it can continue to fool everyone with yet another vain promise of

changing and bettering the lots of Ghanaians with just five months to the end of their term as they tag their new leaders “the game changer” What game is President Mahama going to change in a matter of five months that he could not do in the last three and half years of a government where he served as the Head of the Economic Management Team. Did he just acquire the skills and what it takes to effect the game change or he always had and hid it but

hungered for this ‘golden opportunity’ for him to unleash it? Surely the NDC cannot take us for an audience in a magician’s theatre! The new president should stop deceiving himself that he has a magic wand to transform the lives of Ghanaians within five months, a feat himself and his team have failed to achieve in over three and half years. He certainly has a lot of work to do in tackling the numerous problems that the country is currently faced with and his competence is in doubt judging from how poorly the economy has performed since the inception on the NDC 3 government under his leadership. He should take lessons from the performances of Goosie Tanoh and Dr. Kwesi Nduom in Ghana’s recent elections. These two made a lot of noise but at the end, they turned out to be all about media hypes and campaigns. President Mahama and

the NDC should spare us their concert and focus on completing the tenure of his former boss. Ghanaians do not have to search hard to find evidence of the sufferings that this administration has brought on us all. It is preposterous for Mr. Mahama to attempt exempting himself from all the poverty that his party and personal leadership of the economic management team have unleashed on Ghanaians. He was and has been part of the whole and as such should be liable and take full responsibility for whatever credit or shame that has come to be associated with the NDC 3 administration. As head of the economic management team, what has Mahama done to stem joblessness and the increasing poverty? And as chairman of the Police Council, what has he done to stem armed robbery and the general insecurity? It has become very clear

to every keen observer that the late President was always sick and was hence not practically in charge of running the country. The question then is: who has been in charge all the while? Constitutionally and logically, that mandate fell on former Vice President Mahama. And if he is today having been sworn in as President, wants Ghanaians to believe that he has never been responsible and never in charge of running the state in the stead of his ill boss, then he iseven a weaker leader and leaves the question who was then in charge? The truth is that the NDC team has failed to improve on the lots of Ghanaians and rather engaged in propaganda. And these failures cannot be resolved

by PR gimmicks like they have continued to deploy since the birth of this administration. Mr. Mahama must by now know that PR and propaganda does not provide jobs. It does not put food on the table. It certainly does not pay for rent, health care, school fees and does not resolve the challenges faced by the Ghana Cedi. Ghanaians are expecting President Mahama to keep focus and steady the ship just as the late President promised he would. We have been used to peaceful transitions and we cannot demand anything less of him in his short completion term as President before, during and after elections and hands over to the next government.

NPP Bawku Central MP Jailed For Two Years Peacefmonline.com can confirm that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani Sakande has been convicted on three counts of Perjury, False Declaration and Deceit of a Public Officer. He has thus been jailed two years concurrently on all counts by the Supreme court. A Bawku-based cattle farmer, Sumaila Biebel, in March 2009, filed a suit at the High Court challenging the eligibility of the NPP MP due to his dual citizenship on the grounds that he held both British and Burkinabe passports. The state took interest in the case and filed nine counts relating to his nationality, perjury, forgery

Adamu Dramani Sakande

of passport, election fraud and deceiving public officers to be elected as an MP against Mr Dramani. He was however exonerated on six of those charges on July 8, 2010, leaving with three charges of false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving a public officer. Adamu Sakande is also alleged to have, before the 2008 elections, made a false statement in an application to have his name included in the voters register.

The accused is also alleged to have registered as a voter when the voters register was opened, and subsequently went ahead to vote in the December 2008 general elections, when he was not entitled to do so. Counsel for the NPP MP, Yoni Kulendi, appealed to the court to mitigate the outcome of the ruling because of the health concerns of the MP. According to him, Mr Dramani was a victim of circumstances, since he procured the services of a certain Stanley Opoku, who claimed to be a lawyer, to help him renounce his citizenship and was led to believe the renunciation had been done. But the court rejected the plea. Peacefmonline

Tax Payment Simplified As part of its ongoing reform aimed at simplifying and modernizing the tax system, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has introduced the ‘Self Assessment Policy Document’ under which a taxpayer will be responsible for accurately computing and reporting his/her tax liability. This means taxpayers must show all their taxable income and claim only the deductions and reliefs which they are entitled. Launching the policy in Accra, George Blankson, Commissioner-General of GRA noted that “modern tax administrations the world over have adopted the self assessment system as the best vehicle for determining and accounting for tax liability.” He said the policy is to mobilize revenue and reduce poverty, modernize administration, improve service delivery, reduce

compliance burden and cost and administrative cost, facilitate business and investment and improve integrity, among others. He noted that the first two years beginning this year would be devoted to corporate entities and the like in addition to selected individuals. “Other individuals would be selected for self assessment within the next three years after some grooming and guidance,” Mr. Blankson added. He indicated that publication of names of selected taxpayers would start in the next few weeks or simultaneously by individual notification of their nomination to self assess by the Commissioner-General. He said “taxpayers so nominated would have the statutory mandate to self assess and declare taxes payable at the provisional and final level and submit

same to the GRA at the appropriate times.” He called on stakeholders to support and cooperate with the authority in its bid to reform and streamline tax administration in Ghana. In his address, Dr. Edward Larbi Siaw, a Tax Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning said “the hitherto dispensation whereby taxpayers and tax administrators looked at each other from the angle of the tax administrator wielding an axe, waiting at the gate or window of the offending taxpayer has become an issue of the past.” He noted that the full introduction of the self assessment regime will in the long run improve tremendously a much needed co-operation between the taxpayer and the tax administrator.

Jostling for Veep begins Less than 24 hours after he had been sworn in as President of Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has held his first Cabinet meeting at the Osu Castle, where a number of issues were discussed yesterday. Sources at the Castle told The Chronicle that President John Mahama, a Methodist, followed the foot steps of his predecessor, John Mills, by leading the Cabinet members in serious prayers before

settling down for serious discussions. Details of what transpired at the meeting, which was attended by almost all the Cabinet Ministers and some of the party bigwigs are very sketchy, but The Chronicle gathered that among the issues discussed were the appointment of a new Vice President and the sudden death of former President Mills among others, which bothered on the governance of the country.

In the case of the Vice President position, no firm decision has been taken yet, but The Chronicle gathered that the candidate would definitely be coming from Central Region to help sustain the support base of the party in both Central and Western Regions. As a result, jostling for the position has already started. Among the names that have come up are Madam Hanna Tetteh, former Member of Parlia-

ment for Awutu-Senya, Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Spio Garbrah, former Minister of Communication in the Rawlings’ government and Dr. Kwesi Botchway, a former Minister of Finance, also under the Rawlings regime. Underground information gathered by this reporter also indicated that the candidate nominated by the President for approval of Parliament to become the

Vice President would be likely to become the running mate for President Mahama to contest the December elections. This is the reason why both the President and party leaders are treading cautiously, before the new Vice President is named. The NDC would soon call an emergency National Delegate Congress in accordance with article 22 of the party’s constitution. The said article reads: “The National Executive

Committee may call a Special National Delegates Congress at such notice, place and date. A Special National Delegates Congress shall have the same representation and powers as the National Congress.” There were initial reports that the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, who contested former President Mills in the presidential primary held in Sunyani last year, would become automatic cont'd on pg. 32

Had Mills “done something wiser” he could have survived - Rawlings Former President Jerry John Rawlings says if the late President Mills had “done something wiser” he could have survived a while longer than he did. Speaking on the BBC, former President Rawlings who has never seen eye-to-eye with the

late president since the latter assumed office in 2009, said the news of his former deputy’s demise came as a surprise to his household. “It was quite a shock to both my wife and I because he’s been battling the cancer for quite a

President John Evans Atta Mills died on Tuesday at about 14:15 GMT. The autopsy result is yet to be made public, but the former president told the BBC that President Mills had been battling with cancer that affected both his eye and his ear, and “he (Mills) couldn’t sustain it more than three hours per day.” Mr. Rawlings also told the BBC on the same day that “quite frankly I think that had he been advised and done something wiser earlier on, he could probably have survived for another six, seven months, I guess but it got too tight, it got extremely tight and the poor professor passed cont'd on pg. 12

FOCUS

Greetings from Ghana! From Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Accra-Ghana As I disembarked from the KLM flight from Amsterdam to Accra on the night of Monday, July 9, 2012, the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) looked quite familiar. The weather was not as hot as I thought it would be! My last visit to my motherland was ten years ago and I was very thankful to God that I could see the land of my birth again! It was around 9pm when I came out of the airport. Immigration and custom procedures had been smooth for me though the queue of arrivees at the other nationals’ kiosk was very long! The ride from the airport to Bubuashie, where I spent the night with my niece was very nostalgic! We passed in front of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation where I used to read my news commentaries and reflections on national radio and television during the 80s and early 90s. I remembered my visits to this house as a national patron of the GBC Fan Club to often participate in discussions on youth and national issues on GBC Radio 2 in those days with veteran broadcaster, Godwin Avernogbor in the chair.

Thank God, my GBC Fan Club mentoring activities at the Asokore SDA Teacher Training College, Koforidua eventually produced dynamic media workers in the persons of Tim Quashigah of GTV and Nana Sefa Twum of TV3 (now domiciled in London-England) as well as the prolific social commentator, David Godfrey Okletey! Guys, I am proud of you. I miss you all! Back to my first night ride in Accra, the capital city of Ghana: the Arko Adjei Interchange (formerly Sankara Circle) looked familiar. However, I was shocked that there were no adequate lights under the flyover, making the place dangerous for pedestrians at night. The driving home that night was not as dangerous as I was to experience in Accra later. The traffic

lights in Accra Central were working well and soon we were at our destination though the side roads in Bubuashie look very deplorable! I must confess that my over two weeks stay in Ghana has opened me up to a lot of good things going on in my motherland, yet there are a lot of bad things as well as unfortunate attitudes on the part of the citizenry which need to change in order to move the development of Ghana in the right direction. I have already travelled to the Central and the Eastern Regions from Accra (I am yet to travel north to the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions before going back to Canada) and I have a lot to write about! I cannot do all in this write-up for the sake of space. Attitudes and Lawlessness I am very impressed with the new Tetteh-Quarshie Circle to Mallam Junction highway. Traffic on it is swift and mostly smooth. However, I am taken aback by the lawless attitude of some pedestrians on the same road. Some unscrupulous pedestrians (both young and old) climb over the median separat-

ing the highway to cross the road at unmarked sections (unmarked crossings). I am told by users of the new highway, linking Accra Central to Kasoa, that many lives have been lost on this good road due to this lawless act of pedestrians on the road. Behold, I became a personal witness to one of such deaths last Saturday night as I was commuting the same highway in the capital city of Ghana. Still on the roads and streets in Accra, development is seen in the provision of traffic lights at many major intersections in the metropolis. However, some of these traffic lights have not been functioning for some time now. A typical example is the one at the Kasoa/ Bawjuase/Nyanyarno intersection causing unnecessary traffic delays and careless driving on the part of some drivers. What is heartbreaking about the traffic lawlessness in the metropolis is that some members of the Motor Traffic Unit (MTU) of the

Ghana Police dispatched to maintain law and order at these intersections are visibly seen doing their own thing while drivers horn and scream at each other trying to make their ways through the jampacked intersections! One could see a huge improvement in the supply of electricity in the metropolis with the involvement of foreign companies, mainly Chinese. On other hand, the many foreigners who have ‘invaded’ our motherland in recent times are taking over our economy and gradually depriving many Ghanaian traders of their daily bread. There is also a boom in illegal mining in the country with alarming news of lawlessness by Chinese immigrants at such ‘galamsey’ areas predominately in the Eastern and Central Regions of the country. These foreigners have become so powerful in their illegal activities in Ghana. They are seen carrying guns and threatening lives when confronted. Chiefs and even Reverend Min-

isters are calling for action against such lawless foreigners. I add my voice to their clarion call for the government of Ghana to act now! Unfortunately, I end my greetings with sad news on the passing away of the President of our motherland Ghana, Professor John Evans Fifii Attah Mills, popularly known as ‘Asomdwehene’. He died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from the untimely and painful death of President Professor John Attah Mills. Already, tongues are wrangling at homes and in the streets of Ghana! Time will surely tell but for now we all mourn our departed President!! Ekumfi Otuam neba Fifii Attah, me nnaba! Damirefa due!! Due! Due!!! May his soul rest in perfect peace until the Resurrection Day! M A R A N AT H A ! M A R A N AT H A ! ! MARANATHA!!!

have survived for another six, seven months, I guess but it got too tight, it got extremely tight.” Asked what his impression of the late president’s legacy was, Mr. Rawlings said “he’s played his part. As my Vice President, he was one of the finest but

there again, considering that the cancer affected his eyes and ears, he couldn’t sustain more than three hours a day so it was naturally going to affect his performance.” He said his main problem with the Mills-administration was his inability to reinvestigate the “cold-

blooded killings” of people under the erstwhile Kufuor administration. On his personal opinion on whether newly sworn-in President Mahama is capable of manning the office, Mr. Rawlings said “I don’t know but I hope so.

away.” But in a sharp riposte, Prof. JEA Mills’ family said: “Our entire family wishes it be known that in the spirit of tolerance and peace, as consistently preached by the late Prof. Atta-Mills throughout his life,...three and a half years of insults we took and would have graciously

forgiven as a tribute to the nature and legacy of the honourable man whose death Ghana and the world still mourns. But we deem it extremely provocative and almost impossible to ignore the direction of such un-dignified insults at an honourable man whose loss has turned our hearts

as icy as his body that lies in the morgue.” The statement ended with a para-phrased adage to wit: “If a man climbs up a rotten tree, intending to make it his Castle, do not be tempted to join him or be drawn into an argument with him”.

Resistance to AIDS drugs, a problem that has been widely feared over the last decade, is growing in parts of Africa but should not hamper the life-saving drug rollout, researchers reported on Monday. Tiny genetic mutations that make HIV immune to key frontline drugs have been increasing in eastern and southern Africa, something that should be a clear warning to health watchdogs, they said. “Without continued and increased national and international efforts, rising HIV drug resistance could jeopardize a decade-long trend of decreasing HIV/ AIDS-related illness and death in low- and middleincome countries,” they said. The study, published in The Lancet, is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Union (EU). It is the widest-ever analysis of a risk that has haunted AIDS campaigners since 2003, when drugs started to be rolled out to poorer countries that are home to more than 90 percent of people with the AIDS virus. The nightmare is that — as with bacteria which become resistant to antibiotics — strains of HIV will emerge that will blunt the armoury of antiretrovirals, leaving millions defenceless.

Silvia Bertagnolio from the UN’s World Health Organisation and Ravindra Gupta at University College London looked at published cases of HIV resistance and supplemented this with data from the WHO itself. Over eight years, prevalance of resistant virus in untreated people soared from around one percent to 7.3 percent in eastern Africa, and from one percent to 3.7 percent in southern Africa, they found. Similar rates of 3.5-7.6 percent were also found in western and central Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The difference, though, is that they remained quite stable throughout this period, and did not experience such a big rise. The mutations were found in strains of HIV-1 virus that made them resistant to a class of drugs called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, or NNRTIs. These are the first-option treatments for HIV infection and are also used to prevent transmission of the virus from a pregnant woman to her foetus. If a patient is resistant to the drug, the risks of sickness and death rise in line with levels of virus. Further treatment options do exist beyond NNRTIs,

mens are often far costlier. The paper says countries should step up monitoring of HIV resistance and take steps to guard against start-stop treatment that fuels the problem. They can do this by ensuring that drug supplies are not interrupted and by beefing up monitoring of patients to encourage them to follow the daily pill-taking regimen. Despite the concern, the rollout should carry on, says the paper. “Estimated levels, although increasing, are not unexpected in view of the large expansion of antiretroviral treatment coverage seen in low-income and middle-income countries — no changes in antiretroviral treatment guidelines are warranted at the moment.” Around 33 million people around the world have HIV. In 2011, about eight million badly infected people in poorer countries had access to HIV-suppressing drugs, a figure 26 times greater than the number in 2003 but still only just over half of those in need. The report coincided with the 19th International AIDS conference, a sixday event running in Washington.

Obasanjo,Chief Nwobodo Prof. Utomi Mourn Late Ghana President Atta-Mills In his comments, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is in Ghana for an engagement, described Atta-Mills death as a “shock to the people of Ghana and all of us who knew him”. “He has been a stabilising influence in his country and indeed West Africa,” he said. “With the permission of President Atta-Mills, I was invited to the University for Development Studies, Tamale,” Obasanjo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) via telephone. “I was scheduled to pay a courtesy call on him today and while waiting, I visited Vice President John Dramani Mahama “A couple of hours after leaving the vice president,

we heard about the death of the president at the Military Hospital,” Obasanjo said. ,He said that after due consultation with the authorities of the institution, he had decided that “as a matter of honour to the memory of the late President Mills, the scheduled lecture series be postponed indefinitely.” “My heartfelt condolences to the people of Ghana, the Vice Presid and the family of the late president.” The former Gov. of old Anambra in the Second Republic, Chief Jim Nwodobo, described Atta Mills death as a tragedy for Africa. Nwobodo described the news of Mills death as “very saddening and a

rude shock“. He told NAN in a telephone interview that “Mill’s death was a big loss for Africa in general and ECOWAS in particular“. “The relations between Nigeria and Ghana were liberal under his presidency. The face-off between Nigeria and Ghana over business concerns of Nigerians in Ghana would have escalated if not for his kind of person. “He was a good man and I hope his successor would continue to maintain the good relations he had with Nigeria,“ Nwobodo said. “Mills managed to showcase Ghana as a rising democracy which is post marked as one of the most stable democracies in the world.

Mills’ death is a huge and painful loss - Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has described the death of President John Evans Atta Mills as a huge and painful loss to the coun-

DR. JOHN EVANS FIFI ATTA-MILLS: July 21, 1944 - July 24, 2012 Dear family and friends, With deep sadness we have learned that HE Dr. John AttaMills, President of Ghana, died suddenly July 24th, at the age of 68. Hearing of our beloved Ghanaian President’s transition to glory immediately brought to mind “Our loss, heaven’s gain”. I first met President Atta-Mills in 2001 while he was serving as a visiting scholar at the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Affairs, University of British Columbia, Canada. Working alongside HE Lloyd Axworthy, a previous and renowned Canadian Minister of the Crown, these two former politicians (Mills having served Ghana as Vice-President prior to this appointment) were establishing African development initiatives in preparation for the next G8 Summit being held in Edmonton, Alberta. In response to and in support of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the Kananaskis Summit produced an African Action Plan, which contained commitments on promoting peace and security; strengthening institutions and governance; fostering trade, economic growth and sustainable development; implementing debt relief; expanding knowledge; improving health and confronting HIV/AIDS; increasing agricultural productivity; and, improving water resource management. HE Mills thoroughly enjoyed

his year long stay in Vancouver, taking up residence in the Graduate Apartments on campus. After the first week, he sent his guard home. He didn’t need security. No one was going to bother him in Vancouver. He was free to travel about, and indeed, the way he enjoyed the city was to take the transit system, a different city bus each week, and travel on it to the end of the line and back. His wife joined him towards the end of his stay. Travelling together by car on occasion, one memorable moment was lustily singing in 3 part harmony (Mills occasionally off tune:) hymns of the church. He was pleased to attend our project meetings and represent Ghana in any way he could. Danny Moe was speaking at an event, in which an honour was being bestowed by Mills and the Honorary ConsulGeneral to a nursing facility that had donated hospital beds and equipment. Danny’s energetic and inspirational message had just concluded and Mills passionately hit his fist against the banquet table and exclaimed: “Ghana needs Danny Moe!” Our team had determined that in order to truly get a handle on how we could effectively support neurosurgery developments at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, we needed to personally visit Ghana. Questions arose on the wisdom on such a

visit at that particular time. Was it too early? Should Ghana’s government be expected to financially underwrite the visit? How should we travel? By Ghanaian airlines? Whenever I had questions, Prof Mills always made himself available. Armed with a list of questions, I called him and he graciously agreed to meet with me over a delicious take-out meal. As we ate, Mills began to teach me about the history of Ghana and how issues like HIV-AIDS were of immense concern. He said that HIV-AIDS was 3.8% at that time and if it went over 4%, Ghana was in serious trouble. I wondered on that comment and later came to realize that Ghana was tackling this issue in every way imaginable. Whether clinics, hospitals, billboards, radio news, talk shows, TV, and churches, if all their efforts were still insufficient to reduce and eliminate the rate of growth, then indeed, Ghana was in mortal danger. Thankfully, the efforts were successful and the rate declined. Tackling each question I had in hand, John (as he instructed we call him while in Canada) addressed them expertly, sometimes calling over to Ghana for clarification, always advocating on behalf of his country and the Kufour Government of the day. Never did I hear a disparaging remark. He insisted that it was the right time for us to venture over to Ghana: “People are counting on you, you HAVE to go!” He handed over Ghanaian currency to me to buy something nice for myself. He apologized that it wasn’t much, but he gave me all that he had. He also promised to join us in Ghana, as he would be over there during our visit. The official launch in April of 2002 of the Korle-Bu Neuroscience Project in Accra on the

premises of Canadian High Commission was a flurry of activity. The 80+ guests included leaders of the University of Ghana, College of Health Sciences, staff of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and various ministries of the government. Prof John Atta Mills attended and gave a ringing endorsement of our project and of our leadership. Remarking that “she’s for real!” was truly treasured. That trip solidified the beginning of a vibrant partnership with Ghana, and that investment of Mills’ confirmation could not be underestimated. Protective of our project and knowing that our vision and mission was above politics, Mills instructed me that while he would be fully supportive, he would have to publicly detach himself, being a member at that time of the opposition party. We appreciated his advice and KBNF has enjoyed the tremendous support of both ruling parties throughout our 12 years, largely due to his tact and wisdom. Meeting HE last summer, we discussed the developments of the contemporary Emergency and Clinical Specialties Centre for KBTH. We offered to help in anyway KBNF could, to expedite the process. HE reassured me that he was doing everything he could to see it become a reality. Inspiring to know that cabinet’s recent approval of this project for submission to Parliament was fulfilled during his term in office. He was a man of vision and understood the need to deliver sound democratic leadership, not only for the nation of Ghana, but for the future of the region and continent. Looking back on his Presidency, I reminded him last year at the Castle of a statement he made during his 2008 inaugural week address. “As goes Ghana goes

Africa”. This exemplified his understanding of the critical role that Ghana, as a regional leader nation, holds in their hands; demonstrating to this vulnerable continent that democracy really does work for the betterment of the people. Freedom of choice and opportunity, quality living and national prosperity, IS achievable and more importantly, sustainable. He was determined to ensure that the precious national resource revenues, especially newly found oil, were directed towards building national infrastructure. And indeed, everywhere your eyes can see, Ghana is growing by leaps and bounds, the international community recognizing that investment in Ghana can be mutually beneficial. It was with an intense conviction that HE Mills continued his sacrificial devotion to his people, when his health was challenged. It would have been so easy to give in to personal needs. But indeed, his resolve to enrich and enable his homeland to expediently transition as a contemporary leader nation kept his focus. And during his tenure, Ghana rose to middle level income status, a great achievement for their land. My recent visit to Ghana included forwarding a letter and gifts to His Excellency and the First Lady, July 5th. The First Lady expressed their appreciation just last week, after my return to Vancouver. An excerpt: Dear President and Mrs. Mills, Members of my Board and I have just completed another Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation medical mission trip to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone. We are so very honored to partner with you and your precious country in establishing contemporary neuroscience and health care for

Ghana and the region. The gifts I am sending to you, . . . you are receiving come from our hearts. The DVD is an encouragement for you from Danny . . . I believe that you will be especially blessed by what Danny has to share: When the night is the darkest, the stars shine the brightest! And we need to understand that there are appointments and there are anointments! Queen Elizabeth was anointed for her life role. She cannot retire. When God anoints us for a special role in life, we can never retire. He will sustain and keep and strengthen us. I am praying fervently for you and your family, that the Lord will supernaturally sustain you at this time. We are so very honored to serve you, Your Excellency, and First Lady. President Mills fulfilled HIS God given appointment with passion and vision and mission and served as one ultimately anointed for this role by the Almighty. He did not retire. He served faithfully to the end. We will miss John Atta-Mills, as a genuine friend, an advisor and visionary. However, Dr. Atta-Mills’ life investment and legacy will continue to build hope for a bright future for Ghana and the region. And KBNF will collaborate with our Board of Directors and our Ghanaian counterparts and family in establishing a memorial fund in his honor, for the advancement of neuroscience and health care, an honor that will continue his living legacy. Our heartfelt condolences to the beloved country of Ghana and President Atta-Mills’ family and friends. On behalf of our Board of Directors, KBNFfamilyandfriends, MarjorieRatel President, Korle-BuNeuroscienceFoundation, Canada

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaatemg, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

Some Basic facts about Ghanaians Acquiring Dual Citizenship As I indicated in my previous article on Dual Citizenship, several countries in Africa, at independence, decided not to allow dual citizenship but pressure has subsequently been brought to bear on the governments to reconsider their stance on dual citizenship. Many African states, including Ghana, have, in recent years, changed their rules to allow dual citizenship and many others are currently in the process of considering such changes. It is stipulated in the Constitution Act of 1992 Ghana that “a citizen of Ghana shall cease forthwith to be a citizen of Ghana if, on attaining the age of twenty-one years, he, by a voluntary act, other than marriage, acquired or retained the citizenship of a country other than Ghana”. This loss of citizenship inevitably goes with the loss of rights and privileges associated with citizenship.

ians who have acquired other nationalities would be eligible to apply for dual citizenship pursuant to the Citizenship Act of 2002 (Act 591).

Following Ghana Government’s decision to exhibit reasonable flexibility over the issue of dual citizenship, the Ministry of Interior requested the Missions abroad to bring to the attention of all prospective dual citizenship applicants that any applicant who had no primary Ghanaian citizenship as at 31st December 1996 is not qualified to be registered as a dual Citizen of Ghana but indicated further that individuals in the above category were however allowed to apply to the Ministry of Interior directly for Right of Abode under Section 17 of the Immigration Act 573 (2000). The Government also declared that Ghana-

Dual nationality has become a reality in Ghana. Applicants for the dual citizenship are supposed to complete Application forms (“Form 10”), obtainable from the Missions abroad and submit them to the Missions with the required fees for onward transmission to the Ministry of Interior in Accra for processing. To expedite processing, applicants are required to provide, among other things; proof of payment of processing fees; the applicant’s Ghanaian birth certificate or original Ghanaian passport; evidence of Ghanaian parent’s nationality; passport size pictures of the applicant; applicant’s contact telephone numbers; and names and addresses of some relatives residing in Ghana.

Citizenship confers several rights and privileges on the holder. These include, but not limited to, the right to possess the national passport of the country and to hold certain offices. With respect to dual citizenship of Ghana, a holder will be entitled to apply for Ghanaian passport and shall be permitted to remain in Ghana without limitation provided the person entered Ghana on a Ghanaian passport and not on a foreign passport. Regrettably and disappointingly however, a citizen of Ghana who also holds the citizenship of any other country in addition to his citizenship of Ghana, does not qualify to hold an appointment as a Chief Justice and a Justice of Supreme Court; an Ambassador or a High Commissioner; a Secre-

tary to the Cabinet; a Chief of Defence Staff; an Inspector-General of Police; a Commissioner, customs Excise and Preventive Service; and a Director of Immigration Service. Not only that. The dual citizen can also not be a Commissioner, Value Added Service; a Director-General of Prisons Service; a Chief Fire Officer; a Minister or Deputy Minister; a Chief Director of Ministry; a rank of Colonel in the Army or its equivalent in other security services; and any other public offices that the Minister for Interior may by legislative instrument prescribe. A dual citizenship holder can also be charged with an offence if he uses two passports interchangeably and the Immigration is of the view that it is being

done to deceive an immigration officer. Holding dual citizenship, no doubt, gives the citizen some sense of belonging, security, confidence and happiness while in Ghana. That notwithstanding, the current Dual Citizenship Act that bars dual citizens from holding certain high public offices does not treat dual citizens on an equal footing as the other Ghanaians. More should be done in that regard. James A. Kwaateng is an Immigration Law practitioner with offices located at 168A Oakdale Road, Suite 4, Toronto, Ontario. Ghana pays another judgment debt for Wellington Boots In what could safely be described either as a judicial faux pas or a deliberate miscarriage of justice a judge of the commercial courts in 2009 awarded over two million Ghana cedis to NDK Financial Services. Although the facts of the case and supporting evidence provided by witnesses, Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) as well as the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) pointed out that the state could not be liable in the case, Justice Margaret Welbourne (Mrs) awarded judgment totaling 602,609.50 Ghana cedis to the plaintiff as “THE PURPOTED” balance due a

suspicious loan contracted by Apex Consult from NDK in 2005 to import service boots for the Prisons Service. The Judge made the state to pay the amount plus interest at contractual rate of 5% collectible monthly from July 1 2007. An Additional GH¢ 50,000 was awarded as cost against the state. In December 2005,the Ghana Police Service contracted Apex Consulting Services for the latter to supply 5,310 pairs of combat boots to the Prisons Service at contractual sum of GH¢308,378.25. The Prisons Service contract specification described the combat boots as ‘AVS brand Genuine Leather, direct vulca-

nized TPR sole boot 12” height graded as per size with 22 eyelets.’ It also stipulated that the contract order for the combat boots was valid for 90 days, and payment for the items was to be made within 30 days of delivery. Apex consult then approached NDK Financial Services for a loan facility of GH ¢128,236.50 ((¢1, 283, 365, 00) to enable it cover the cost of procuring the boots. As condition for the approval of the loan the Director General of Prisons at the time, Mr. William K.Asiedu guaranteed for Apex to make payment of the contract sum in the joint cont'd on pg. 54

Ethiopian Airlines makes History with Inaugural Flight By Jonathan Annobil, Toronto

‌as the first African Airline to fly into Canada History was made on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 when Ethiopian Airlines touched down at the Pearson International Airport at precisely 8:50 A.M. The plane, a long-range commercial Boeing 777-200 LR with over 280 passengers made the 12 hour non-stop flight to become the first African Airlines to offer direct flights between Toronto and the African continent. Toronto is the second North American destination for Ethiopian Airlines after Washington D.C. The company has been given two weekly flights landing rights at Pearson International Airport. A delegation from Ethiopia led by Ato Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines and some government ministers as well as Mrs. Michele Levesque Canada’s Ambassador to Ethiopia were on the inaugural flight from Addis Ababa. At the airport to meet them were members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, some distinguished members of the Ethiopian community in Canada, decked in colorful traditional costumes, Travel Agents, the media as well as Mr. Howard Eng, President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater Toronto Airports Authority. Garlands were hung around their necks as they entered the arrival hall amid shouts, clapping of hands and blowing of traditional horns. CEO Eng, then welcomed the delegation with a short speech after which he presented them with a gift. In his remarks, Ato Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines on behalf of the entire Ethiopian Airlines family welcomed everyone to the historic event. He added that it was his hope that the twice weekly flights will be increased to more weekly frequencies to enable the Airline serve its customers better. Ontario’s Premier Hosts Reception in Honour of Head of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at

Premier Dalton McGuinty with Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad

On 16 July 2012, a special reception in honour of the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, was held at the Paramount Banquet Centre in Woodbridge, Ontario. The event was hosted by the Premier of Ontario, Hon. Dalton McGuinty and the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration for Ontario, Hon. Charles Sousa The event began at 11.30am with a welcome address by Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Charles Sousa. Thereafter, the Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty expressed his pleasure at receiving Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad spoke about his admiration for the humanitarian efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim

Jamaat in Canada. He noted the dedication of the Jamaat in promoting the values that make their community so important to the Province of Ontario. “We are fortunate to have a strong Ahmadiyya Muslim Community that is inspired by the leadership of His Holiness to promote peace, justice, equality, respect and understanding for all humanity”, he emphasized. In his address to the gathering Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad spoke of the importance of always upholding the truth in all matters. He said that honesty was the key to developing trust which would in turn lead to peace and justice. He thanked Premier Dalton McGuinty for hosting the event. His Holiness said that even

though he had a very busy schedule in Canada, he deemed it essential to attend the reception. A person who departs from honesty does not have complete faith because it proves that his faith lies not with God but elsewhere. It is only through the right word that confidence and trust can develop. And it is trust that is a means for guaranteeing peace. If this golden principle is followed at every level then a spirit of peace and harmony will spread throughout all of society, from our domestic family units, to the wider world and indeed in terms of the relations between nations”, he emphasized. Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said that the basis for all laws and agreements ought to be honesty, whereby all parties sought to serve the interests of mutual benefit and equity, rather than to pursue selfish interests. He said that fair dealing would instill confidence and thus would remove the fears and anxieties of the general public. Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad concluded by stating that for true world peace to develop it was also essential that the poor and deprived countries were helped by the developed nations. He said that all forms of aid ought to be given with sincerity, rather than in an effort to fulfill vested interests.

Thousands of Chinese in Ghana: Only 607 registered Official records at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) indicate that there are 607 Chinese with work and resident permits in the country, immigration officials have said. Out of the number, 75 are in the mining industry, 197 in the oil, gas and energy industry, while the rest are in other sectors. However, according to a source at the Chinese Embassy in Accra, the number of Chinese in the country is in the thousands. Conceding that the number of Chinese in Ghana could be more, immigration officials said that was so because some of the Chinese came into the country as investors, while others used the Aflao Border as entry point. They stated that most of the Chinese were issued with visas on arrival, explaining that with that the companies or individuals who invited them would have to write to the Director of the GIS for approval before the visas were issued. Such Chinese visitors have to state in the letters

where they are coming from and the purpose of their visit, the day of arrival and departure, who will be responsible for their accommodation, among others. If the officials are satisfied with the requirements, they will then issue the visas in writing to the applicants at a fee of $150. According to immigration officials who spoke to the Daily Graphic on condition of anonymity, majority of the Chinese, in their attempt to avoid going through laid down procedures for resident and work permits, flew from China to Togo and used approved or unapproved routes to arrive in the country. From the beginning of the year to date, 81 Chinese who were involved in illegal mining activities in the country have been arrested by immigration officials. Out of the number, 29 have so far been repatriated to China. The immigration officials said although 20 of the Chinese were issued with repatriation orders, they were still in the country because they claimed that

they had lost their passports and other documents through a fire outbreak. They were currently awaiting travel certificates from the Chinese Embassy in Accra to enable them to return home, the officials said. They said 32 of those who were arrested had valid resident and working permits and that 11 were still under investigation. According to Mr Ben Ayeh, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, small-scale mining was the preserve of Ghanaians. According to the laws on mining, foreigners are issued with permits to venture into large-scale mining, not small-scale mining, in the country. Currently, records at the Minerals Commission indicate that there are 799 small ÂŹscale registered and licensed mining operations owned by only Ghanaians in the country. Mr. Ayeh said most often Ghanaians, after acquiring the licences, sold or transferred them to foreigners. Making reference to the incident which occurred at Manso-Nsiena last

UNCLE SETH TROPICAL FOODS

Thursday, he said neither the Chinese nor the local people had licences to engage in small-scale mining in the area. Last Thursday, there was exchange of gunfire when

the youth of MansoNsiena in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region clashed with some Chinese suspected to be engaged in illegal mining operations in the town.

Following that, the Police Administration has launched full-scale investigations into the activities of illegal miners in the country.

BUSINESS Business Internal Controls and “Failure Avoidance” Tactics for SMEs By Eddie Twumasi Smith Bsc(Hons) Chem Eng, MBA,CGA, CPA

Business Internal Controls and “Failure Avoidance” Tactics for SMEs Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) have been considered the engine of growth for the provincial/ federal government with SMEs contributing on the average 25-30% to the provincial or federal gross domestic product (GDP) since 2009. But current reports from Industry Canada, Statistic Canada and TD Economics (2011) suggests the prospects of SMEs exceeding the average rate of 27.50% of the GPD will be highly over optimistic if SME performance trends prevails in the next couple of years. Small businesses in Canada are affected by many of the same influences as large businesses, such as pick-ups, slow downs (pro-cyclical), less sensitive to US economy, and exchange rates, however more sensitive to consumer spending, commodity prices, interest rates, housing markets, part-time and youth employment. SMEs, likewise larger corporate entities are faced with similar environmental factors, such as political, economic, social and technological enablers and constraints. By and large, SMEs have not shown to out perform or overcome some of these periodic or cyclical forces resulting in proportionate turnover or failure rate. Historically, SMEs failure rate has been found to be high (15.0%-20.0%) in the first three years of start up and averaging about 10.0% there after. According to the Canadian

Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), some of the reasons for SME failure has been due to weak general management, weak financial controls & fraud , weak internal controls, limited financing, and weak marketing capabilities. Almost half of the firms in Canada that go bankrupt do so primarily because of their own deficiencies rather than externally generated problems. They do not develop the basic internal strengths to overcome the external environmental forces. SMEs need a well thought-out tactics or strategy to overcome these external constraints. CFIB has identified 6 key requirements for successful SME operation which are:

* business and industry knowledge, * organization and management capabilities, * Prudent internal controls * marketing skill, * customer/vendor relations, * Smart operational tactics, vision & growth strategies This article will elaborate on business internal controls, and steps necessary to avoid SME failure. Business Internal Controls Internal controls are methods or procedures adopted in a business to: • Safeguard its assets; • Ensure financial information is accurate and reliable; • Ensure compliance with all financial and operational requirements; and • Generally assist in achieving the business’s objectives. Small businesses are the most vulnerable to fraud because they often don’t have effective internal controls. However, by removing opportunity and motivation for fraud and theft, and ensuring you have systems in place to discourage errors and identify mistakes and anomalies quickly, you are

able to discourage fraud in the first place and, if that fails, you can take corrective action to minimize losses. It may seem harsh but it has been stated that, when it comes to small business, all fraud starts with the owner. It happens if you have been too trustful or too distracted either chasing more business or enjoying success. Compared to large businesses, you have fewer staff to check the effectiveness of procedures and systems in your business and, usually, there are no auditors to do internal control checks for you. Small businesses are known for having weak internal controls. Owners/managers hold the key to the fight against internal control failures and must be attentive to the concept and issues of internal controls to maximize the business potential and minimize the risk of fraud, error and loss. SME owners should be cognizant of the benefits of internal controls in their operations to minimize operational and financial losses. A check up or review by a qualified accountant/auditor will help in identifying systemic and process weaknesses in an SME business operation. This review can be broad in scope covering sales controls, accounts payable controls, physical assets controls, inventory controls, bank and cash reconciliation controls, procurement controls and many more. A healthy SME will at the minimal have well thought out operational & financial process controls to ensure losses are minimized and if possible avoided. Turbulent Cycles SMEs profitability is invariably affected by changes in the economic trends or cycles such as, consumer spending, interest rates, housing prices, commodity prices and other macro economic cont'd on pg. 30

Small claims court & you By: Zane Roth and Jayson Schwarz “”If you have a problem, don’t take the law into your own hands: you take ‘em to court”!” Such was the catchphrase offered at the end of the People’s Court, a popular reality television series from the 1980s in which people would air their dirty laundry and have small legal claims decided by a television judge. Interestingly, the People’s Court was no court at all, but was a form of binding arbitration a form of alternative dispute resolution we will have to leave to discuss another day. Today, we will be discussing Ontario’s own “People’s Court”, the Ontario Small Claims Court, which is where you would go to sue or defend, where the claim either for or against you, is less than or equal to $25,000.00 in damages plus interest and costs. Small Claims Court is often referred to by lawyers as the People’s Court for a number of reasons. First, the Court provides considerable assistance to claimants bringing lawsuits without a lawyer. Each small claims court office also has a duty counsel who is able to assist and sign affidavits if necessary. (I will provide a website address at the bottom where you can find guides to all steps in a legal proceeding in the Small Claims Court.) Lawyers often refer to Small Claims Court as the People’s Court because ordinary citizens can go through the process and have their day in Court without lawyers or paralegals. Unless your claim is particularly complex, or is worth a considerable amount, you will usually end up paying lawyers or paralegals more in fees than you might hope to be awarded by a judge if you are successful. A little known fact about the Small Claims Court is that subject to only a few restrictions any of your friends or neighbours can represent you in the small claims court (or in traffic court, or before the landlord and tenant board, or before most tribunals established by the government), provided that they are doing it “pro bono” (for free). If you want to sue someone or a company, partnership, etc., taking people to Small Claims Court is a relatively simple affair. You fill out the Plaintiff’s Claim

form (available online), file it at the appropriate court, pay the $75.00 fee, and “serve” the claim on the defendant(s). If you atre sued the process is the same except you file a defence. You may want to have a lawyer or paralegal help you prepare your claim or defence and advise you as to what you will have to do to prove your case. After that, it’s your turn to play lawyer. After you serve your claim, the person you are suing then has 20 days to file their defence. After the defence is filed you will need to set the matter down for trial, a settlement conference will be held and if n resolution off to trial. If you are suing it is a good idea to call the Court 21 days after serving your claim to see if a defence has been filed. If not, get down to the Court right away and ask the clerk to note the defendant in default. This precludes the defendant from filing a defence, and is the first step towards obtaining “default judgment” (winning your case by default). You can then examine the defendant about what assets they have to satisfy your judgment, and can ask the Court to order that defendant’s wages be garnished or their property be sold to make sure you get paid. This is very serious. So serious in fact that if the defendant fails to attend the required examinations or hearings they can be put in jail for up to five days. No other Court in Ontario has that much power! So, when you have a problem under $25,000, don’t take the law in your own hands, and, whatever you do, DON’T settle your grievance on a reality tv show, take ‘em to the Small Claims Court. TALKING FINANCES The 10,000 Hour Rule By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto There is no such thing as a free lunch and neither is there such a thing as becoming a master at something overnight. Even if you have incredible natural raw talent and can learn something ten times faster than the average person or run much faster than the average person, without hours, days, months and years of practice and honing your skills, you will not become a master at your chosen art/ craft/skill. The emerging scientific picture is that 10,000 hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert in anything. In countless studies of golfers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice skaters, concert pianists, chess players, karate black-belt holders, sky divers and

many other professions, including financial experts (stock brokers, day traders or money managers), the number of 10,000 hours comes up repeatedly. How long is a period of ten thousand hours? It equates to around 3 hours of practice a day or twenty hours a week of practice/effective exposure for ten years. However, studies have not shown a case in which true world-class expertise was accomplished in less time for the average person. It appears that it takes our brain this long to assimilate all that it needs to know to achieve true mastery. There are a few exceptions to this rule. One will be window of opportunity skills (ie: language development is best from age 0 to 10). If you embarked on the acquisition of said

skills, if indicated window passes, it will be very challenging or impossible to achieve world mastery within that time period. Another will be brute force activities that rely on youthful strength (boxers, weight lifters or 100metre sprinters). With sprinting or boxing if you had not already peaked (arrived at mastery level) by your late twenties, it will be almost impossible to start at that age and achieve world class supremacy, in spite of your 10 000 hours of output. Thirdly, there are those among us that have been given a gift

from the Creator. They are able to reach world class mastery in less than 10,000 hours of output. Such individuals have specialized tools (gifts) in their chosen profession that aid them effortlessly. Hakeem Olajuwon did not start to play basketball until he was 15 yrs. old, when he stood 6ft 9inches tall. Within 6yrs of playing he was able to make it to the NBA, and is known as one of the 50 greatest players to ever play the game. Becoming a master at anything can be divided into 4 Phases: Unconscious Incompetence: This is the phase that many people live in perpetually. They are unaware that they actually are terrible at a lot of things even though they think that they are doing alright. This is the worst and most dangerous phase to be in. Ethiopian Airlines makes History with Inaugural Flight cont'd from pg. 23

ity and Ethiopian Airlines respectively jointly cut the ribbon to welcome Ethiopian Airlines to Pearson and to Canada. Afterwards a special cake was also cut. A section of the travel agents, some invited guests and the media were given the opportunity to tour the plane. Later on, as was the norm for inaugural flights, 2 fire tenders sprayed the plane as it prepared to take off. Later on in the evening, the Airlines continued the celebration with a dinner

at Liberty Ground , Exhibition Place, where the proverbial African hospitality was on full display, with authentic Ethiopian and Italian cuisine. Jaivah, an Ethiopian dance group based in Toronto entertained the guests. CEO Ato Tewolde Gebremariam said that it is a known fact that passengers traveling between Canada and the African continent had to endure transit hassles at intermediate stations in

The 10,000 Hour Rule cont'd from pg. 29

Sticking with the stock example, an investor knows they are not very good at investing and accept the fact that past success was based on luck, not skills. Such an investor can take courses in an attempt to improve their investment skills or they turn the management of their financial portfolio to a professional money manager. Conscious Competence: This is the phase where the seeds of a person’s hard labor start to bear fruit. They may have spent weeks, months or years studying, learning and practicing their skills and finally have come to a stage where they are actually pretty good at what they do. They are far from being the best in their field but they have some good authority and are a lot further than the majority of people who are still starting out. Financially speaking, this will be a person that has invested in the stock market for years. They might have lost money, made money and has a system of investing that is working constantly for them. Unconscious Compe-

tence: This is the stage before mastery. Once the unconscious competence stage of a skill/art/craft is reached it is a matter of time before that person becomes a master at what they do. To reach this stage usually takes a couple of years. At this phase, many of the components of the skills are automated and it can be done with ease. In conclusion, the four phases of mastery should be crystal clear. You should be able to take any skill/craft/art in any area of your life and fit it somewhere into one of the 4 phases of mastery. Once you establish where you are, you will be able to see the amount of work/hours required to get you to the next level. It takes years to move up the levels of being good, advance, expert and finally mastery. If things get tough and you get knocked down many times without seeing much progress, don’t give up. Setbacks and failures are preparation for you to handle higher level skills. These setbacks are an invitation of the environment encouraging you to a higher level activity until you self-actualize, a.k.a world-class mastery.

From now on, passengers between Canada and Africa, whether they travel for business or leisure, will be relieved from the above hassles and enjoy the direct flights, he added. He added that the promotion of trade, investment and tourism will be greatly enhanced by this direct flight

of Ethiopian Airlines. Patricia Bebia Mawa of Planet Africa was the MC for the night. According to Tewolde Gebremaiam, the first flight left Toronto carrying 319 which is rare in aviation practice to see first flights fully booked. Also in attendance were Bal Gosal Minister of State, Canada, Mr. Deriba Kuma, Minister of Transport of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Ambassador to US and Canada, Girma Birru.

Business Internal Controls and “Failure Avoidance” Tactics for SMEs cont'd from pg. 28 forces. With this in mind, SME owners will have to budget and forecast changes in marketing strategies to be able to outperform or overcome some of these external factors. Some of these tactics are: 1. IMPROVE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES For a business to successful over a long period of time, it must respond rapidly to competitive and market changes, benchmark to achieve best practices, and establish a few core areas of strength, notes Michael Langemeier, an economist at Kansas State University. To do that, you must work to improve your operational efficiencies, like the use of standard operating procedures that help you focus on product quality and consistency. A study of SMEs with five years of continuous data at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) suggest that SMEs with above average cost efficiency levels, on average, were more productive, more cost efficient, and had higher profit margin, asset turnover and return on asset ratios. These results illustrate that it is possible for an SME to have a sustained comparative advantage which allows the SME to grow at a faster rate or to compete as the larger corporation. 2. EXAMINE TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION Successful businesses also pay attention to the benefits and drawbacks of new technologies they adopt, so follow their lead. Focus on tools that simplify procedures and processes. For example, technology for inventory management, database that interface with transaction system or processes to provide real-time information to management on the daily basis to enhance management decision that have direct impact on the bottom line. That is, the SME owner who wants to stay competitive and be abreast with changing needs to the customer will leverage tools and technical advancement that will make the business operations more efficient and effective in rendering services to clients. 3. UNDERSTAND INDUSTRY CHANGES & COMPETITIVE DYNAMICS Business and industry knowledge should be near the

top of anyone’s list of requirements for small business success. You can acquire this knowledge through trial and error when starting a small business, but you will probably have to declare bankruptcy before you learn all you need to know. My theory is that lack of knowledge is one of the prime reasons so many new business fail. While successful entrepreneurs themselves didn’t rate being well organized highly, it’s logical that organizational and management abilities are also absolute necessities for being a successful entrepreneur. You’re not going to be able to satisfy many (if any) clients or customers without these skills, and you’ll certainly quickly run afoul of the Canada Revenue Agency without them! People keen on starting a small business sometimes forget about the managerial and administrative skills necessary to run a business; if you’re going to start a successful small business, you need to have or develop expertise in business planning, money management, managing people, directing business operations, and directing sales and marketing operations. Business Management Basics will help you learn how to manage these aspects of starting a small business. What are the other abilities you’ll absolutely need to be a successful entrepreneur? When twenty-one inductees into the Babson Academy of Distinguished Entrepreneurs were questioned about the principal reasons for their success, only three abilities were mentioned by all twenty-one successful entrepreneurs; responding positively to all challenges and learning from mistakes, taking personal initiative, and having great perseverance Investing the time to learn the skills you need before you start your own business is especially wise because once you’ve decided to put so much energy into starting a small business, you’re going to want it to develop into a viable, thriving enterprise. Sadly, there’s a percentage of small businesses started in Canada each year that survive less than two years. For those who are interested in starting your own business at some point in time, it will be prudent to watch out some of the above requirements and starting building your knowledge base.

Placing Children’s Best Interests First in Post Divorce Parenting Agreements By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW, Toronto

After divorce parenting disputes are common, and irrespective of the rationale for the split-up, children of all ages end up losing significantly because of one parent’s sustained absence from the parenting picture either due to sole maternal or paternal custody arrangement and a number of reasons. Children face exceptional challenges after divorce. It is in this context that a post-divorce parenting plan designed by the divorced parents themselves is necessary to provide structure for interactions in order to avoid conflicts. More damaging to children’s psychological well being after divorce is also persistent bickering over which parent the children stay with and how much time the other parent get to spend with his or her children. Post-divorce disputes also have negative effects on children’s academic performances. Children are usually the innocent casualties of divorce because while they generally find it difficult to adjust to their parents’ split-up, many parents unfortunately add to the problem by knowingly or unconsciously turning their children against each other in post-divorce disputes. Many divorced parents fail to realize that whether or not they are together, their children love, want and need them equally. And consequently, fundamental to children’s psychological well being and development after their parents’ have split-up is a mutually agreed upon shared parenting plan. Irrespective of the conflict, which led to the end of their marriage, both parents are vital to their children’s welfare and development. Parents are also central to their children’s world because children never forgot either parent. The way divorce transition is handled is of tremendous importance. Unless otherwise determined by the child welfare authorities or by a court’s order as a result of peculiar reasons such as for instance a child’s exposure to a particular divorced parent might not be in the child’s best interest, it is always productive for the non-resident parent to have unimpeded access to his or her children. In the ultimate best interest of children therefore, it is always a good idea if parenting is shared fairly between the divorced parents. After divorce parenting disputes simply have tremendous detrimental effects on children than many disputant parents usually tend to recognize. And as a result, effective parenting plan in the aftermath of divorce must not only be put in place, but strictly adhered to and also handled in such a way that what is always in the best interest of the couple’s children supersede any other considerations. A parenting plan is simply a detailed articulation of after divorce parenting responsibilities, which include specific arrangements regarding time spent by the children in each parent’s household, holiday schedules, how decisions are made, and how costs will be allocated. Unlike sole maternal or paternal custody arrangement, which gives one parent lone custody of children af-

ter divorce, shared parenting plan involves the negotiation and allocation of parental responsibilities fairly. It is about an afterdivorce parenting arrangement that primarily reflects children’s needs and interests. It also emphasizes parental responsibilities to children over parental rights, and leaves neither parent feeling either overburdened or disenfranchised in relation to these responsibilities and above all, access to, and enjoyment of their children. In this regard, post-divorce parenting plan should be developed in ways that allow children to recognize that they are far more important than their parents’ self interests. And children, whose divorced parents have civil and cooperative relationship tend to feel secure, benefit from consistency, better understand problem-solving. They also have positive examples to follow. Unsurprisingly, the notion of parenting plan has essentially grown out of attempts to resolve the traditional custody arrangements, which is usually a sole custody or primary caretaker versus joint custody options. Other than a sole maternal or paternal custody option, shared parenting plan is generally the viable and most advantageous deal for families after divorce. Sight must not be lost that children whose parents have divorced have probably been exposed to pre-divorce negative family interactions or strained familial relationships and difficult adjustments. Hence children and even adolescents suffer from divorce because of high levels of marital discord, ineffective and inconsistent parenting, decreased parental well being, and reduced parent-child affection and interaction. Besides the obvious negative psychological effects on children, which emanates from a divorce, children often blame themselves for their parents’ break-up. Divorce also adversely affects children’s academic performances given that they focus too much on the split-up between their parents and that significantly distracts them from their school work. Similarly, when divorce is not handled properly by putting the children’s interests first, it may potentially lead to low self esteem among them. Consequently, divorced parents have a great of responsibility obligation to separate their previous conflicts from their parental obligations while they develop a shared parenting arrangement that is guided by their children’s needs and interests. Parenting disputes in divorce have far-reaching negative effects on children than most disputant ex- spouses tend to realize. Therefore regardless of the extenuating circumstances that led to the split-up, ex-partners need shared parenting plan, which is solely based on the needs and interests of their children. An effective, agreeable and workable parenting plan after divorce must be devoid of ill feelings. Best after divorce parenting plan must be anchored on fairness by giving each parent’s equal authority to make decisions regarding their children’s well being.

Jostling for Veep begins presidential candidate of the party. But that rumour has been ruled out as there are no provisions in the party’s constitution that allow the runner-up in the presidential primary to become the automatic candidate for the elections, in case the elected flagbearer dies, as it has happened now. Should Hannah Tetteh, who is also the Minister of Trade and Industry, and said to be the front runner, be nominated as the Vice President, she would be the first Woman to hold that position in the political history of the country. Connoisseurs, however, believe that the possible candidate born to a Hungarian mother and Ghanaian father does not have any strong foothold in the Central Region to rake in the necessary votes for the party in the December elections. The next in line is Kwesi Ahwoi, who is from the Ahwois family. The Ahwois are from Agona in the Central Region and Sefwi in the Western Region. In fact, their mother hails from Agona Mankrong, whilst their father comes from Sefwi. Kwesi should, therefore, be the right candidate for the position and also replace President Mills in the Central Region. He, however, lost terribly when he contested the party’s parliamentary primary in the Agona East constituency. This has erased his chances of becoming the Vice President, since his own people have rejected him. The onus, therefore, falls on Dr. Kwesi Botchway who also hails from the Central Region and Agona Asafo to be specific to take up the mantle, but as to whether he would accept it is another

question. Dr. Kwesi Botchway is the longest serving Finance Minister in the history of Ghana. In 2004, he contested President Mills for the NDC flagbearship and lost. Since then, he has not been playing front line role in the party. He is, however, a member of the departed President’s economic management team, drawing economic policies for the country. Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the National Democratic congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has announced that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party would meet today to decide the mode they would use to elect the new flagbearer for the party. Speaking on Joy FM last night, ‘General Mosquito’, as he is popularly called, said the constitution of the party is silent on how they elect a new leader in circumstance such as what has happened constitution of the party. The said article which grants residual powers to NEC reads:, “Where on any Party matter there is no provision in this Constitution which deals with that matter, the National Executive Committee shall, by regulations, provide for that matter to be dealt with.” He also quoted the same constitution and argued that whenever a vacuum occurred at the national executive level, NEC would step in to fill the gap. The late President Mills was a national executive member, therefore, NEC per the constitutional provision, could step in to fill the gap by endorsing in this case, President John Mahama, as the Presidential Candidate of the party. Alternatively the party can also call an emergency congress as dictated by Ar-

ticle 22 to endorse a presidential candidate. The method to be adopted by the party would, however, be known by the close of work of today. In a related development, President John Mahama has announced that he has instructed the Chief of Staff to get in touch with President Mills’ family to plan a befitting funeral for the former President. He was speaking in a meeting with Former President Kufuor, Nana Akufo-Addo, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who led the party’s delegation to extend their condolences to him, and also congratulate him over his new position as President of Ghana. According to President John Mahama, he had received a number of calls from world leaders who wanted to know when the funeral would be organized. He mentioned these world leaders as President Barack Obama, Alhassan Quattara, Goodluck Jonathan and a host of others. He, however, said the government alone could not organize the funeral and that is why he had instructed the Chief of Staff to contact the family on how to plan the whole funeral. It was his hope that the death of his predecessor would help to unite and reduce political tension in the country. President Kufuor on his part advised the new President to see himself as father of the nation but not to a particular group of people. According to Kufuor, the President might have ascended to the new position through a political party, but as soon as he takes his oath of office, he becomes the father for all Ghanaians.

Frankly Speaking Jerry Rawlings must bow down his head in shame!!! By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg Former President Jerry John Rawlings has now shown his true colours as a callous and mean-spirited person who carries his hatred of people even in their death. The late President Mills was the Vice-President under Jerry Rawlings from 1997 to 2000. It was Rawlings who courted Mills from his job at the Revenue Commission and the University of Ghana in his socalled “Swedru Declaration” to be his Vice President after Rawlings savagely beat up his former Vice president, another Fanti man called Nkensen Kweku Arkaah at a Cabinet meeting in June 1995. It was Jerry Rawlings who, in 2000 and 2005, anointed John Evans Atta Mills as the NDC’s Presidential candidate against challenges from other candidates like Dr. Kwesi Botchway, Obed Asamoah and Spio Garbrah. It was Rawlings who got Dr. Kwesi Botchway and his supporters to run for their dear lives from the Central Cafeteria at Legon during the NDC Congress for daring to challenge his anointed candidate, John Attah Mills. He later got the likes of Obed Asamoah, then National Party Chairman and Frances Essiam, then National Women Organizer of the NDC so savagely beaten that they escaped from the EREDEC Hotel in Koforidua by a thin thread with their lives. Their crimes were daring to challenge Rawlings’ anointed “son” John Atta Mills for Presidential candidate and Kwabena Adjei for Party Chairman. One joke now in Ghana has it

that if you think life in Koforidua is good, go ask Obed Asamoah. He has first-hand knowledge of what “life” in Koforidua really is after his savage beating at the hands of Rawlings’ hoodlums and thugs. Rawlings was on the campaign trail during the 2008 elections seriously campaigning for John Atta Mills to win the Presidency. Many people credit Mills’ electoral victory in the 2008 Presidential elections to the active involvement of Jerry Rawlings. It was therefore expected that after Rawlings had gone to all this extent in helping to get Mills nominated and elected as President, he will be his strong backbone and supporter during his Presidency. In fact Mills was so appreciative of the support of Rawlings that he declared at one point in the Presidential elections campaign that he will “consult Rawlings 24 hours, seven days a week”, a statement that was to haunt him years later. Alas! Rawlings started to do an about-turn in his relationship with Atta Mills shortly after the elections. But the real trouble had started way earlier before the elections when Atta Mills picked John

Mahama as his Running mate instead of the favoured candidate, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who was proposed by Rawlings and his wife. Right from January 2009 when Atta Mills took office, Jerry Rawlings has been at his throat everyday publicly castigating him for one thing or another. His criticisms of the President turned into personal insults and extreme hatred and he wasted no opportunity to insult the President at both local and international scenes. This was someone who had been President of Ghana for nearly twenty years and who had worked with Atta Mills for four years as his Vice President and had supported him to get nominated as Presidential candidate on three ocassions. There are a lot of people who attribute the swift deterioration of the President’s health to the constant barrage of insults, hatred and criticisms he received from his former boss and party founder, Jerry Rawlings. The last straw, we are told, came in the last weekend before the President died when Rawlings walked into a meeting with him at the Castle and told the President off in his face to count him out of any support for the coming elections. Witnesses from that meeting spoke of how devastated President Mills was at the behaviour of Jerry Rawlings. The President was reported to have opened the meeting by telling Rawlings that “I do not hate you”, but that did nothing to dampen the hatred Rawlings exhibited towards Mills.

As if that was not enough and against all traditional and cultural etiquettes of our nation, Jerry Rawlings lashed out again at President Mills when he died on Tuesday July 24. He told the BBC in an interview, his very first comments on the President’s death that, if Mills had “done something wiser” he could have survived a while longer than he did. Holy smokes!!! At the same time he expressed a hypocritical “shock” at the death of his avowed “enemy”. “It was quite a shock to both my wife and I because he’s been battling the cancer for quite a while but this is certainly the wrong time for him to go because we have elections around the corner in December,” he stated. Mr. Rawlings said “quite frankly I think that had he been advised and done something wiser earlier on, he could probably have survived for another six, seven months, I guess but it got too tight, it got extremely tight.” So he knew that Attah Mills was not “wise”? And he picked him in 1996, made him his Vice President for four years and supported him for three more elections? What does that say about the integrity of Rawlings himself? Your guess is as good as mine. Rawlings then dropped another bombshell: He said that his main problem with the Mills-administration was his inability to reinvestigate the “coldblooded killings” of people under the erstwhile Kufuor administration. “Cold-blooded killings” under Kufour’s administration?

What does Rawlings take Ghanaians for? Fools? Any Ghanaian and people on the international scene know who the coldblooded murderer of Ghanaians has been. Who killed Colonel Enningful and General OddarteyWellington on June 4th 1979? Who killed the Kyereme Gyans, the Mawutor Gokas, the three High Court Judges and a retired Military officer and the thousands of Ghanaians who disappeared between June 4th 1979 and September 23, 1979 and between December 31, 1981 and December 2000? Jerry Rawlings has caused enough damage to Ghana, its image and psyche and he should please leave us alone NOW!!! Ghanaian tradition and culture demand that we don’t say anything evil and bad about someone when he/she dies especially in

the immediate aftermath of his/her death. What we do, especially in the first week of the person’s passing, is to mourn and sympathize with the bereaved family. Rawlings chose to do the exact opposite. That is not surprising for a couple of reasons including his continued hatred of President Mills which blinded him to any decent behaviour. Rawlings’ shameful behaviour towards President Mills even on his death is also driven by the fact that he (Rawlings) has no sense of culture and tradition, which is not surprising given his confused background. He should just disappear from the Ghanaian political scene after all these years of madness and confusion which have caused us the death of a sitting President, the first, not a proud one, in our history. Enough is enough!!!

ACCEPTING CRITICISM WITHOUT TAKING IT PERSONAL

By Golda Abena Quayson

We have all been shocked by the youth violence that has rocked the Metro Toronto area of late especially around the summer periods. It is sad to note unfortunately that some of these teens and young adults are Ghanaians and from our other Black Communities. We all thought that violence, especially those that result in tragic circumstances, including death of innocent youth was becoming a thing of the past. But it appears these tragic events are resurfacing. We all seem to be at a loss as to why these are happening...again. Most of community’s parents and elders now seem to have lost hope within ourselves to get a handle on this unfortunate turn of events involving our youth. Where did we go wrong? Have we given up on our youth? Do we lack the time to monitor their activities or we are just tired of trying to support and monitor our youth? Here are few suggestions that might help us as parents and community elders to get back on their feet again and hopefully get a handle on this problem that seems to be spiralling out of control. One of the most important things to do is to monitor the behaviour and changing lifestyle of your teenage children. There are signs that you need to observe and pick on: Do you see sudden changes in your teenage teen’s behaviour, dress or attitude? Sometime you can trace these changes to the friends your teen is hanging out with at school and in the community. You may not be able to choose your teen’s friends, but they are often struggling, in silence, to overcome some of the peer pressure they’re likely confronting at school and the neighbourhood they live in. They may not be able to tell you but they may be counting on you for support and relief. Your once well-behaved teen has started getting into trouble and you don’t know who to blame. Is it the influence of their favourite celebrity? Or perhaps that risqué television show or foul-mouthed rapper they spend so many hours listening to? This sudden change in behaviour is a yellow flag to pick on for monitoring and further investigation about your teenager’s path. Like all humans, teenagers need friends and that friendship is very important to them, but that same friendship can also lead them into the wrong and dangerous track. It is therefore important that you get to know your teenage child’s friends. Whenever possible, meet your teen’s friends and their parents, and watch how your teen behaves in the company of these friends. Does your daughter act like the girl you know at home or is she putting up a tough exterior behaviour? That is a yellow flag! Has your son changed the way he dresses or acts to mould to these friends? Why is your teen attracted to these particular friends? Create a Family Contact list. Make sure you know where your teen is going and who they are going with, and call the parent or adult in charge to confirm plans. When your teen knows that you will check in with the other parents, they are

less likely to make plans that cannot be corroborated. Make time with you teenage child and encourage him/her to create a list of “green light” friends those who are positive influences, “red light” friends- those who are negative influences, and “yellow light” friends those who they are not sure of yet. This way, parents know how to respond when their teen asks to spend time with someone who may be of bad influence. Find a Positive Peer Group. Bad influences persuade teens to engage in risky behaviours, but peer pressure also works the other way. Finding a positive peer group will encourage your teen to imitate healthy behaviours, such as friendly competition for good grades, or engaging in healthy competition to get into college or university. Peer influences cannot be underestimated; when the pressure is on and the most important thing to a teen is social approval is at stake, even the brightest, most well-behaved teen can make a poor decision. Parents need to understand that negative peers sometimes beat other teens down emotionally until they give in. It is our responsibility, as parents and caregivers, to build teens’ strength so they can resist those pressures. Parents can become overwhelmed by the influence other teens are having on their child. After all, you are only one or two people against a whole crowd of teens that spends every day at school with your teen and determines your child’s social standing. Sometimes parents need to get help, often by removing their teen from the school or move them away from the negative neighbourhood and influences until they are strong enough to stand up for themselves. Find out what types of clubs, sports and extracurricular activities are offered at your teen’s school and encourage them to get involved. Kids who participate in these types of activities tend to be more driven academically and seek healthy friendships. Build your teen’s confidence. You need to establish rules, give rewards for good behaviour and enforce consequences for negative behaviour. This shows them that you will support them when they are doing well. Praising them and providing positive reinforcement and taking an interest in what they do well, will remind them that you love and accept them. A strong, confident teen who knows they have the support of their parents or big brothers is best equipped to make the right choices, even if it means sacrificing their popularity. Teens learn to stand up for what is right, even when it is not the easy thing to do when they know that they have the support of their family when the going gets tough out there. We all have a responsibility to ensure that our teenagers live in a violence-free environment in which they can go to school or hang out in the parks and clubs without fear of violence erupting around them with tragic consequences.

Doris Osei Bonsu, Crisis Counselor, Toronto Criticism is the practice of judging the merits and faults of something or someone in an intelligible or articulate way.Criticism can be a hard thing to give and take without offending or being offended, but criticism can be a great help if done properly. It can help you find the areas that you need to improve upon. It helps you set ideas and boundaries for your next work- whether that be writing an article, dressing, approach to situations/ things, making a presentation, story-telling, or parenting skills. There are some people who will bother you by their frequent criticisms. Nothing seems to please them in the world. They cannot notice, in a delicious meal, except a strand of hair that mistakenly dropped therein. They cannot notice a clean garment except a drop of ink that affected it by error. Neither can they notice in a beneficial book except an innocent printing error. Hence, none seems to be saved from their criticisms. They always have comments to pass. These people scrutinize everything, be it great or small, good or bad. There was this colleague of mine in my workplace and our relationship to this day continues, except that I do not remember him ever making a positive comment about anything. I asked him about a presentation I made during a Black History Month Celebration, which was praised by most of the staff and participants. But she coldly remarked, “Well, it is ok, but I think you should have mentioned this and that person. I didn’t like the duration, either. Your choice of Guest Speaker was not the best, she looks white”, and so on. For criticism to be constructive, it should be of interest to the criticizer and the criticized. There should be bonding and trust that the discussion is for the right reasons, and the criticism should be presented as a discussion. When the criticism meets these criteria, there is a strong foundation for learning to occur, and for both members to benefit from it. Here are some advantages to constructive criticism: Gives New Perspective & Valuable Insight When someone invites our criticism, we have the opportunity to help that

person by giving our perspective or insight into the situation. For example, someone asks us to check out an article they’ve written to get our opinion. Chances are the person really wants to know what we think so that she can make it the best it can be. Our objective in reading the article is to give the person valuable insight into how they can improve the article. If they weigh the importance or usefulness of the criticism, they can rewrite or revise the article to make it better. Thus, the writer and the article become more valuable due to the constructive criticism the writer received. Here’s the real kicker: different people have different perspectives and knowledge about the way the world works. Each person brings a unique perspective to the table. If we listen and try to understand their perspective, we can apply that perspective to our work to make it better. If someone wants to improve the design on his website. Who could provide beneficial criticism? Web designers? Regular readers? Casual readers? Everyone provides a unique perspective. Every day, I get emails and comments that are amazingly positive and encouraging, and in truth these messages are the very thing that sustains my writings. However, I also get negative comments now and then, and some are not nice criticism either. How do you deal with criticism? I think the first reaction for most of us is to defend ourselves, or worse yet to lash back. And yet, while criticism can be taken as hurtful and demoralizing, it can also be viewed in a positive way. If it is given in honesty, it can spur us to do better. It’s an opportunity to improve. Stop Your First Reaction If your first reaction is to lash back at the person giving the criticism, or to become defensive, take a minute before reacting at all. Take a deep breath, and give it a little thought. In the past, I tend to get a little angry when I’m criticized. But I have also taught myself not to react right away. For example, I’ll let a critical email sit in my inbox for at least an hour before replying. Or I’ll walk away from someone instead of saying something I’ll regret later. That cooling off time allows me to give it a little more thought beyond my initial reaction. It allows logic to step in, past the emotion. I don’t have any-

thing against emotion, but when it’s a negative emotion, sometimes it can cause more harm than good. So I let my emotions run their course, and then respond when I’m calmer. Turn a Negative into a Positive One of the keys to success in anything you do is the ability to find positive things in things that most people see as negative. Tired of your job? That’s a time to rediscover what’s important and to look for a better job. Lost possessions through a natural disaster? This allows you to realize that the stuff wasn’t important, and to be thankful that you were still alive and safe. You can do the same thing with criticism: find the positive in it. Sure, it may be rude and mean, but in most criticisms, you can find a nugget of gold: honest feedback and a suggestion for improvement. See it as an opportunity to improve Thank the Critic Even if someone is harsh and rude, thank them. They might have been having a bad day, or maybe they’re just a negative person in general. But even so, your attitude of gratitude will probably catch them off-guard. My habit of thanking my critics has actually won a few of them over. They became friends of mine, and eventually a couple of them became some of my biggest proponents. This is all because of a simple act of saying thank you for the criticism. Even if the critic doesn’t take your “thank you” in a good way, it is still good to do — for yourself. It’s a way of reminding yourself that the criticism was a good thing for you, a way of keeping yourself humble. Learn from the Criticism After seeing criticism in a positive light, and thanking the critic, don’t just move on and go back to business as usual. Do actually try to improve. That is a difficult concept for some people, because they often think that they’re right no matter what. But no one is always right. You, in fact, may be wrong, and the critic may be right. So see if there’s something you can change to make yourself better. Be the Better Person Too many times we take criticism as a personal attack, as an insult to who we are. But it’s not. Well, perhaps sometimes it is, but we don’t have to take it that way. Take it as a criticism of your actions, not your person. If you do that, you can detach yourself from the criticism emotionally and see what should be done.

Lifestyle Ask The Doctor By: David Yaw Twum-Barima, MD, MSc, FRCPC

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

FAST FOODS: ARE THEY GOOD FOR YOU? As summer rows around again, the urge for “easy life” and foods grow again. In this issue I will revisit a topic that was discussed a year ago but needs repeating. How many calories do you consume when you visit your favorite fast food outlet? In recent years there has been a lot of talk about fat contents of some common food products. Most

people are now aware that both trans and saturated fats are not good for

you. Equally bad for you is a high salt diet/food product. In a recent study, scientists looked at the caloric and salt content of some of Canada’s most popular hamburgers. The study looked at the McDonald’s Big Mac, the Burger King’s Whopper, Wendy’s Baconator, the Hero Burger, Harvey’s Angus Burger, and A&W’s Teen Burger.

Sarkodie Concert in Toronto By Giorgio Sika Bema Marfioso

Fresh off Sarkodie making history becoming the 1st Ghanaian to win a B.E.T award, Ghana fastest rapper, Obidi was in town to kick off his 2012 King of Azonto Canada tour. On Saturday, July 7th he was in Toronto to perform to a sell-out crowd at On the Rox Nightclub. The energy at the concert was electric as Toronto-based Ghanaian artists such as Team GLR records label mates, Freeman Nadawo, AO,

Shelly X Banks and V-Bling graced the stage before the main headliner. “Mr. Borga Borga” hit the stage just after 1:30 am and was given a huge standing ovation.. The Rapperholic did not disappoint as he performed a few freestyles, old favourites as well as some of new tracks. Overall it was a well-organized concert and fans left satisfied.

Dr. Bremang Donates to Presbyterian Church of Ghana cont'd from pg. 38

Health Organization, a Canadian Charity. The presentation ceremony took place at the premises of Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto on Sunday, July 15. The medical machines were received on behalf of the Ghana church by visiting Professor SrakuLartey, Dean of the Presbyterian University Col-

lege at Abetifi Kwahu in Ghana. Also present at the ceremony were Rev. Yaw Barimah AsamoahBoadu, Accountant of the University College, Rev. Frank Adu, Pastor of the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Erone Newman Bremang and Wofa Yaw Nyarko, Executive Director of VISION 2000. It will be recalled that Dr. and Mrs.

Bremang have suppported the Presbyterian Church’s Hospital and College of Nursing at Agogo, Asante Akyem with used medical equipment worth several thousands of dollars over the past three years through Vision 2000 Education and Health Organization. (In the picture: Dr. Bremang in a handshake with Prof. Sraku-Lartey).

McDonald’s has been serving its Big Mac for more than 40 years. The 209-gram serving still has its lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and special sauce, and weighs in at 550 calories. If you hold the cheese, you can shave it down to 480 calories. The Big Mac has 232 calories from fat and 1,020 milligrams of sodium. Burger King’s Whopper is a 290g serving of beef, tomato, lettuce, pickle, onion, ketchup and mayo on a sesame seed bun. It packs 670 calories, or 760 calories if you order the Whopper with cheese. It contains 40g of fat. Sodium content in a Whopper is 910mg. Wendy’s Baconator Single is a 181g sandwich made from a beef patty, processed cheese and

Applewood smoked bacon. If you add honey mustard sauce, dill pickles, yellow onion, tomatoes and lettuce, the calorie count will be 580, with 280 of those calories from fat. A fully loaded Baconator packs 14g of saturated fat and 1,370mg of sodium. Hero Burgers are currently only available in the Greater Toronto Area. The Hero 4-ounce burger has 302 calories, of which 208 calories come from fat. The saturated fat comes out at 11g and sodium around 398mg. The information supplied for the Hero 4 oz. burger is for a plain burger with no toppings. Harvey’s has locations in all provinces except Saskatchewan. The 243g Harvey’s Angus Burger comes with tomato, let-

tuce, pickles and onion, and will supply you with 719 calories. If you hold the bacon and cheese, the burger is 560 calories. It has 35g of combined fats. The sodium level for this burger is 1,390 mg. A&W Canada operates restaurants across the country, and is perhaps best known for its Teen Burger. At 236g, it is topped with lettuce, tomato, bacon, processed cheddar cheese, ‘Teen’ sauce, ketchup, mustard, pickles and diced onion, and supplies 500 calories. The more modest Mama burger, minus the cheese and bacon, has 100 fewer calories. A Teen Burger takes 208 calories from fat. It contains 1,220 mg of sodium.

People of Canada Assist Dr. Wiafe to Build an Eye Clinic in Ghana. A brand new facility was commissioned by the Hon. Ama Benyiwa-Doe, the Central Regional Minister at Awutu Breku on April 25, 2012 to open an Eye Clinic for the West African sub-region. It is dubbed “OPERATION EYESIGHT UNIVERSAL, For All the World to See”. The Clinic known as WATBORG EYE SERVICES run by Dr. Wiafe Boateng on 24hrs service was constructed with the help of Taylor Philanthropy Limited (a Canadian Family) and the

people of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Research shows that more than 200,000 of the 23 million inhabitants of the sub-Saharan countries are blind, most from avoidable causes. A significant percentage of people in the sub-region struggle daily to meet their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing. Operation Eyesight has chosen to work in Ghana because the need is great and because of the leadership of a remarkable

He has advised Operation Eyesight for several years and in 2009 was appointed the organization’s Director for Africa. With Operation Eyesight support, Dr. Wiafe founded Watborg Eye Services, a private hospital specializing in eye services in Ghana’s Central Region. Using Watborg as a base and referral centre, Operation Eyesight is working to strengthen the primary eye care system in the Central and Western regions. This includes working with long-time partner Standard Chartered Bank through its Seeing is Believing program which funds most of the rehabilitation and development of three district hospital satellite eye clinics in the Western Region. In an exclusive interview

Encountering God at the ACCI National Youth Convention 2012 From: Ruth Joseph, Montreal

The Apostles’ Continuation Church’s (ACCI) National Youth Convention 2012 took place from July 6-8 and was hosted by the Montreal Youth’s Ministry (Christ Ambassadors), at the Church premises situated at 378 Cremazie East, Montreal. The aweinspiring theme was, That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection (Philippians 3:10). This is the first time Montreal has hosted this convention. The actionpacked weekend brought together sister branches of the Church from Manhattan, the Bronx, and Toronto, with approximately 72 visiting guests in attendance. The official opening of the convention began with introductions by Mrs. Gifty Pepra as well as short presentations from each branch, praises, worship, prayers, alter call, music, and a unforgettable sermon by Brother Christian Owusu,

Ghana pays another judgment debt for Wellington Boots cont'd from pg. 16

names of Apex Consulting Services and NDK Services on condition that order was valid for 90 days Without informing the Prisons Service, Apex used the previous guarantee it had from the GPS to obtain additional loans of GH ¢85,000 from NDK . In fact Invoice, tendered in Court, said that the Apex boots arrived at Tema port on March 30, 2006. But the Ghana Prisons Service refused to take delivery of the items because the Bill of Lading referred to imported 360 cartons containing Gents Leather Half Boots, were different from combat boots as specified in the contract and the 5,310 combat boots had not been supplied, within the 90 days contract period. The BNI report on the case based on the search done by CEPS/GCNet, also tendered in Court, verified that Apex imported Wellington boots (gents synthetic Leather half boots,) totaling 1,400 pairs and 1,760 pairs of gents leather full boots. The 1,400 full boots cleared on February 9, 2007 were 9” high with 9” eyelets and NOT the specified 12” high, with 11 eyelets. As a result of Prisons services’ refusal to take delivery of the items Apex could not repay the loan as agreed upon with NDK. When Apex defaulted to pay back the loan, NDK filed a suit against their client and the Prisons Service to recover its money. NDK prayed the court to grant an order of the sum of GH ¢602,609.50, being the purported balance on the loan as of June 30, 2007, interest at the rate of 5% per month and additional costs. The figure however increased astronomically to GH¢ 2,800,000.00 (¢28 billion), which was the approved sum and paid out to NDK. The High Court judge held that “the evidence before me indicated that Ghana Prisons Service “did not take delivery of the boots and, therefore, it did not pay” Apex to enable it to meet its obligations to NDK Financial Services.” The court said the argument that Apex failed to supply the boots within 90 days was untenable because it did not find, on the face of the contract, any time or deadline for the delivery of the boots. It furthermore held that the argument by the Attorney General that Apex was required to communicate acceptance or execute some documents, while in another breath alleging that there was a contract but Apex failed to deliver within the specified time, was untenable. It said the boots were available for inspection on delivery but Ghana Prisons Service failed to carry out the inspection, while no place was designated by the service for the delivery to be effected. Evidence from both CEPS and the BNI however pointed to the fact that APEX never imported the specified boots as demanded by the contract into the country. More coming. The Lead

“Youthful Exuberance” in Leadership Can Mahama do Better in Ghana?

Former Ghana President Rawlings mention of the fact that due to the late President Mills illness he was only capable of working 3 hours per day seems awkward to many in our culture of humans that I have studied, not only in Ghana but even in America. You just don’t use certain words and don’t usually criticize a leader or person who just passed in those words. There is feeling among some Ghanaians that the assumption of office of a younger person in Ghana necessarily will mean improvement in performance. It is quite possible when I was a young man I may have thought the same. However, now that I am 65 and know myself, I’d like to answer that question and explain something and share about the impact of youth, age, maturity, experience, on the human mind and executive performance. Are today’s youth taught and have the dedication, love for country, integrity, the skills and characteristics to make effective executive decisions of leadership? Mahama seems in his 50s but can he do better due to his youth? My uncle I am sure would ask: Can he crack a whip? One member of GLU wrote this and this is my response: “Now that we know that President Mills could only function for three hrs a day, all this time some people were deciding for him. Now the truth is known about the deceased President

Mills dismal performance. Let us give President Mahama the chance here as he is going to call his own shots. I am glad of what he got going for him, and that is the youthful exuberance. He will do better than his predecessor” (Kwame Sarpong, GLU forum, Thursday, July 26, 2012 8:47 AM) You make me smile – not total laughter. You don’t sound like a man who can crack a whip! Come oooon! Ever worked in a high pressure environment? An Akan proverb suggests that you can predict how a dance or party is going to go from the early music and atmosphere. One can judge a man and his administration in his first week and then say 10-30 days. When electricity complaints occur in Houston, say in an emergency, does it take a week to get reports? Look, folks, youth has nothing to do with it, and I am not asking President Mahama (nor Mills when he was alive) to climb electricity pole to fix wires! At the age of 50, a man who knows what he is doing will not forget them at 68 or even later, or when he is on his death bed. I am almost 66 and the only thing I don’t remember well but can easily look up maybe the high level equations we studied in Physics and Engineering to pass the exams, but decisions on how to crack the whip? Come oooon! Look, if this will help, let me say that age has not slowed my mind much. I can,, well,, I mean my mind, can even predict the trend of modern technology – I can tell you all the direction in which high tech electronics (Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Amazon) products will go. Don’t be surprised to see your Tablets have a small RAM Memory and Hard Drive Memory in the near future so you can do a little bit of work when on the road or waiting at

the doctor’s office. The only thing my body is complaining about these days is waking up in the night since I don’t listen to the Doctor’s advice not to eat or drink at night and losing sleep drains my energy the next day! But I have control over it,, and I pay the price. I am still watching you all called youth and when I see somebody smarter for the job, I will tell you. Can one predict President Mahama? I have personally met President Mahama at close quarters at the Achimota golf Course in 2010. I sincerely think he is a charming and affable person. Can he deliver? We don’t know yet. He just published a book launched last week, by coincidence. I am not being harsh but right now Mahama is on the spot and I challenge him to announce how he is going to direct and manage to solve the problems facing the nation and people that we all know for years: the distribution of water, electricity, communication services and decent roads even in areas where people have money to pay! Well,, shall we add how he plans to eliminate open sewage in Ghana? How he plans to maintain the Sport Tourism he talked about at the Achimota Golf Club anniversary. Shall we add also how he plans to have residential roads built to specifications not to see potholes every year! How he plans to ease traffic in Accra by calling on his own younger brother Engineer to help us design traffic flow /transportation around Accra and our major cities? Look, my brothers and sisters African men and women, don’t give too much excuses to yourselves. All the man has to do if he has ever managed a house construction project, a carpentry shop, a farm, a cattle herding enterprise, a whore

house, a spare parts shop at Abose-Okai or Kumasi Magazine (Business management expertise can be learnt in every enterprise) is to announce his Vision, Set the Goals and Objectives with time schedules, appoint the right Managers or Directors, and every week or month meet and monitor the progress- and crack the whip!! All Management in life takes a similar fashion as described! Was President Mills capable? I am not here to praise the dead but 3 hours per day was enough for President Mills. Some are making too much of what was reported yesterday by former President Rawlings in an interview. To cite a personal example, in 1978 December I had a fire accident and sustained 3rd degree burns at home when I worked at Texas Instruments. I was at home and being paid, I think for 2 months and my boss, a nice white woman (my only boss who was a woman), called and explained to me: “Kwaku, just drag yourself in to the office and you will not be put in a long term disability, which will cut your pay in half”. Well, I did and all I had to do for a few weeks was drag myself, literally in pain, to the office and issue directions to my technicians and evaluate tests being done. It was my mind they were paying me for, not my body! President Mills’ clear mind was the issue during those 3 hours in the day. African leaders like to give too many excuses! A capable man who knows what he is doing can dictate all orders and ask the Secretary to write them down at a Cabinet Meeting and next week ask for status updates. Should disability be a limitation? In America don’t we see cripples in wheel chairs performing tasks? Anybody who

has worked for a Major American or European/Western corporation at the level of Management will know what I am talking about. The CEO is hardly seen daily except in Meetings, and he knows what projects the companies was supposed to be working on and in slide presentations, the VPs and Directors will be giving their presentations and he simply critiques. Again a personal example, I remember one time having to give a Presentation like that at a top level meeting in 2001, and that was my first time and I used the Professorial approach, trying to explain things,,. Well, the CEO gave me a kick in the butt, as Americans call it, by saying something like “everybody knows these,, keep going”. Of course I was a little nervous my first major presentation but the man’s comment gave me the impression they all in the room were capable Engineers and Managers and should know that elementary stuff – just show the STATUS and RESULTS! Managerial skills and decision-making experience are two of the most important elements missing in African leadership today. Of course there are other skills. sincerely wish Western Universities would not allow degrees to be granted to African Students until the host societies have provided them opportunities for at least 2 years work experience in industry before these students pack their bags and go home, eventually rising to high positions. Germany, I understand, used to have mandatory training in Engineering but I am not sure if they still do. To be honest I feel disgusted in any man in power who talks about electricity being a problem in his area and says “even my own house has similar problems”. For God’s sake, when are African leaders going to learn to

crack the whip, as my uncle would put it! Another friend Alex wrote that I should “cut the new President Mahama some slack”, since he just assumed office. No, Alex, I am not giving President Mahama any slack at all,, just like I was never given any slack when my projects were due and I had to give status reports and presentations, in order to earn some money to build those properties in Ghana! Yes, the Lawyers among us can adjourn the case and come back another day, but Alex, you are an Engineer and you know there is a cane on your back to deliver on time else your food is eaten by your competitor! In Ghana our competitor may be the American company who is trying to decide where to locate his $50 million small Assembly Factory in a third world nation and trying to decide between Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda under Paul Kagame, and South Africa! It could be a clothing factory who is to invest $20 million to manufacture clothing since Chinese made clothing is being rejected by American now for the poor quality. I see on the market clothes made in Honduras, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, etc, all of them better than the Chinese made clothes, and I for one stopped buying “made in China”. I see nothing from Ghana and I get annoyed and wonder if the coup makers and their cohorts never had any brains in their heads as to how to stimulate such industries and watched them collapse, perhaps some rejoicing! Worse than Animal behavior!! Gyamfi Brothers and so forth, whatever happened to them? ! Ghana started on a good footing and today we are too far behind. If a job needs to be done, we cannot afford to wait till the next day, Period!! Mahama cannot tell me he does not know who he would like to be his Vice President! Just call whoever you have in mind and in a 2 hour interview, and submit his or her name to Parliament for Vetting tomorrow morning! No! I am not cutting any African leader any more slack. Let him tell those people surrounding his house waiting to shake his hands to go home so he can work!! Many in Ghana are sick and tired of the Speaker and Leaders in Parliament spending without limits and without a budget, and then acting as if there is infinite time! The youth can run fast but leadership takes making executive decisions and experience is what counts. Let Mahama limit the talk but show us his PLAN and act now, and in two weeks we will all know if there is hope or not for Ghana. Kwaku A. Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo LESSONS ON LOVE — Part II In the last article, we began a discussion on love, and wish to continue. We said that: 1) LOVE IS A CHOICE, and 2) LOVE IS A SET OF ACTIONS. These are ideas I have accumulated from years of observation, and wish to encourage you to discuss them and add your own good suggestions. 3) LOVE IS POSSESSIVE, AND MUST THEREFORE BE CAREFULLY GUARDED. Every form of love has an element of possessiveness. True love also allows freedom. Love should not therefore be allowed to possess to the point of putting shackles on the one you love, or putting a cage around the money or property etc., whereby people even “get electrocuted” or “chased away by lions” when they try to touch it. It could be your special food at home, cell phone, sound system, ministry, business, program, girlfriend, boyfriend, spouse, fiancée, computer, special friend, family member, child, sports, your precious body, clothing, jewelry etc. You can be deceived to believe you are carefully protecting the thing or person, when you are actually possessing with crazy immature passion that is rooted in intense selfishness, and rather engaging in indirect slavery. Undue possessiveness can unconsciously imprison you as well with selfish love that will restrict and squeeze you in return, and keep people or even future blessings away from you, as you try to love the other person or thing with overzealous infatuation. If love is not properly guarded and strictly supervised, it can get out of control, run wild, and create untold chaos plus severe damages all over the place. You hear all the stories in the news and witness all the violence due to competitive jealousy and rivalry over love, betrayals, suspicions, and accusations in relationships and marriages, and among family members and friends, right? When you love something or someone, you literally possess the thing or the person in your heart to some extent, depending on the level and intensity of your love. That is why you must carefully watch your mind (thoughts) and heart (emotions) to find out where and how you allow them to go day by day. If you are a true Christian, the peace of God in your heart is always a sure indicator when your thoughts and heart are going astray out of step with the directions and will of God’s Spirit, and being deceived to operate in the flesh. We can be so jealous (negative feeling that someone is also getting what you have) or envious (desiring to possess what someone has) regarding things or people we love. Honestly,

when you have strong love for someone or for something, the “natural selfish man” in you (which we are born with as sinners) will begin to feel selfish and yell within you: “Hei! That is only for me! Don’t touch my thing!” It is your duty to see the danger, admit it, and quickly kick that negative thought out of your mind, and quench those selfish feelings in your heart before they sink deeper into your spirit and stay there stubbornly to torment you and deceive you to take unwarranted and sometimes even stupid steps to “protect your thing.” Suspicion and mistrust suddenly spring up like mushroom in the dark, when you feel and begin to panic, that your love is being shared or stolen by someone. No matter whom the one is, the person suddenly becomes a feared or threatening competitor (even your pastor, fellow minister, church elder, or deacon, brother, sister, parent, child, boss, in-law, trusted counselor, friend, ministry partner, business partner, political comrade etc.). Some bosses quickly fire people meaninglessly, people move away to live somewhere else, others immediately cease all communication, and people resign positions with no given reason (which they alone know). Some married men can go to the extent of taking the wife hostage and making her a slave at home with no interactions with anyone. Some spouses or fiancées (ladies and gentlemen alike) will behave like spying agents screening everything and spying every move, reading behind everything of yours including your phone calls, time out of the home, emails, internet searches, colors and stains in your garments especially under wears, and even you coughing and sneezing. Love is such a strong emotional and spiritual force and a fire to the extent that when it becomes SELFISH LOVE that is misdirected and mishandled, it can burn us and burn anyone else that comes within the range of the destructive emission coming out of us. Most of it is normally the results of vengeance and the burning passions of envy and jealousy that seeks to possess the thing or person all alone without sharing the sweetness, passion, benefits, or glory with anyone. These negative applications of the passion of self-

ish love are can result in things like violence; hard words; abuses; setting of traps to frame the person; crafting lies; defamation of character; secret slander; spreading of false rumors; publications to destroy reputation; obstruction of the person’s benefits or favors; hindering his or her opportunities; robbing the person of important things; stopping him or her from having friends or even contacting family members and people who can help him or her; painful break of sweet relationship and marriage plans, or flourishing marriage or business; using every spiritual and physical means to stop one from sharing property or money; pronouncing curses; convincing or paying people to do harm to the person; and other wicked schemes etc. We must see the thoughts and feelings plus the entire idea of love as an important gift from God that we are privileged to inherit and exercise. We must learn how to exercise and apply love with the required wisdom, carefulness, godliness, and fear of God attached to our thoughts and feelings of love and affection towards people. Application of scriptures like 1 Corinthians 13: 1-8; 1 Peter 4:8, plus sincere prayers from our hearts, will always enable us to allow the possessive nature of love to operate correctly in our hearts and minds, for us to have people and things on our hearts for real love, concerns, care, compassion, sympathy, kindness, and mercy without possessing to the extent of making things and people our own in selfish ways that will rather destroy the essence and true meaning of love, and do more harm than good. Yes, learn to carefully, wisely, sensibly, spiritually, and maturely guard any love you have at anytime, for it to receive God’s approval, favor, and blessings. 4) LOVE IS COSTLY AND RISKY I can imagine someone saying “Yes, love costs. I understand. But you mean that love is risky too? Since we seek to preserve ourselves, why then should we run the risk of loving others?” The fact is: Love is COSTLY because it involves sacrifice. Love is RISKY because you may not get love in return. Ahaaaa! Now you see my point, eh? The varieties of disappointments, pain, and broken hearts that we have all suffered in many ways, can be largely attributed to these two fundamental facts that we have either overlooked or not understood about true love. Look at how the Author of love Himself, Jesus (God) was finally treated by those he sincerely loved and brought Himself so low to their level in order to serve, heal, feed, teach, embrace, and love them. THE

TRUE GIFT OF LOVE IS NOT JUST WHAT YOU GIVE, BUT WHAT YOU SHARE. And, sharing means YOU CANNOT GIVE LEFTOVERS. It means also that it might not be enough for you, or could be very dear to you, but YOU SACRIFICE AND SHARE, either the whole thing (after having it for a while) or part of it (although you had originally planned to use all of it). The fact is that you cannot run away from sacrifices if you really love anyone. If you don’t want to sacrifice as you show love to people, then no one can date, court, or marry you, or do business and ministry with you, or live happily with you as a family member, friend, or visitor under one roof, or work happily with you in the same office. If you selfishly want to have all of your body, materials, resources, blessings, gifts, talents, money, time, favors, ministry, spiritual endowments etc. ONLY FOR YOURSELF, AND GIVE ONLY LEFTOVERS OR GIVE NOTHING IN ORDER TO AVOID SACRIFICES AND RISKS then you will always be alone without any loyal friend, and finally die alone without making any meaningful impact on any life in this world. If you are also afraid and apprehensive that you may not receive any similar love in return for the love you are showing, giving, or sacrificing, then you will avoid a lot of opportunities to demonstrate love to many people, hoard God’s gifts that He gave you with the purpose of passing them through you for others, and thereby lose many blessings as well. Jesus clearly and loudly echoed an important divine principle to us as a door for our godliness, breakthroughs, and favors, that “IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE” (Acts 20:35). Do your best to fight every thought and temptation to give, pledge, promise, vow, participate, follow, serve, and give support with the primary motive of getting something back by all means. If you have such a habit, then God may have to discipline you to learn how to give unconditionally for Him to bless you properly. Of course you must give to others and show love wisely; but, please, settle it in your mind and heart that whether it is in a relationship, marriage, home, family situation, in-law matters, school, workplace, church, ministry on the street etc., YOUR ULTIMATE REWARD AND APPROVAL COMES FROM GOD. Trust the Lord enough to believe that all of your sacrificial love, and the risks you are taking to love others or offer kindness and support WILL BE FINALLY REWARDED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLYACCORD-

ING TO GOD’S PROMISES. THE LORD WILL NEVER FAIL YOU. It may take some time for you to receive your full rewards and benefits for your love. People (plus yourself) might therefore wonder if you had not been a fool and a weak person to love, demonstrate kindness, offer assistance, and wasted your time and resources the way you did. But always remember your Savior Jesus. It took Him 30 years to prepare for 3 years of ministry. Tell yourself: “You may tell lies about me, despise me, deny me, abuse me, dump me, abandon me, throw me out, rob me, malign me, spread false rumors about me, slander me, gossip about me, mock me, cheat me or cheat on me, accuse me, try me, condemn me, crucify me, and bury me. BUT you wait and see. BECAUSE I HAVE ENTRUSTED ALL OF MY LIFE INTO THE HANDS OF A FAITHFUL GOD THE FATHER (Just as Jesus did and said ‘Father into Thy hands I commend My Spirit’), I WILL RISE AGAIN! AND I WILL RECEIVE GOD’S GLORY. If I keep sacrificing and risking my life to love others, and continue to obey the Lord, he has promised that my latter glory will be more splendid than my first glory with which I entered this word as a beautiful baby some years ago,

or the first glory with which I entered into my relationship or became part of the group.” 1 Peter 4:1-19. Encountering God at the ACCI National Youth Convention 2012 cont'd from pg. 51

of the most powerful conventions that I have witnessed since being a member of Apostles’ Continuation Church. The Convention picked up momentum of the weekend with a Saturday morning of discussion, prayers, and fasting which was broken by a picnic that was held at Park Henri-Julien. A fun afternoon was spent with games that included a relay race, tugof-war between branches, and an energetic basketball tournament that was won by Montreal. The Saturday evening was hosted by Madame Amponsah and Ransmond with amazing musical performances by a dance group, Egwe’s Angels from Montreal. The Manhattan branch presented an inspiring skit about not conceding to defeat, but rising up and fighting back against the wiles of the enemy through prayer. Songs were also performed by Sister Emilia and group courtesy of the Bronx branch, as well as a lively performance by trio Clement Arhin, Emanuel Arhin, and Bismark Danso. Sister Tracey Owusu performed an exquisite solo rendition of “Higher Ground.” Two of the most profound and powerful moments of the evening were the testimonies of Brother John Juan and Deacon Owusu Pepra. The weekend rounded up on a high note with Sister Natasha Boakye Yiadom as the gracious host for the final day of activities. It came to a compelling completion on Sunday with Holy Ghost teachings by Sister Angela, praises, worship, prayers, an alter call, and a fundraiser (hosted by Overseer Evans Oppong Nketiah and Sister Felicia Agekum). The Montreal youth assembly presented a dynamic performance with the debut of a new play titled, The Bridegroom. The main storyline was inspired by a popular Youtube video titled, Waiting for the Prince, by Mount Zion Films. It is a testament to the coming Rapture of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as indicated in the Word of God. The closing admonitions were rendered by the Resident Head Pastor of the Apostles’ Continuation Montreal Branch, Pastor John Arhin eloquently sums up the convention in the following statement: “…By the grace of God, from the beginning to the end of the youth convention, the power of the Holy Spirit manifested and God’s presence was felt, and actually, we witnessed the potential that God has placed in our children.

FOOD FOR LIFE Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah GUN VIOLENCE AMONG THE YOUTH: HOW DO WE OVERCOME THIS SOCIAL CANCER? This article was first published in the Ghanaian News, July Edition of 2007. Eleven years ago when I came to Toronto, the news of homicide was a rear occurrence in a densely populated area such as the Greater Toronto metropolis. Unfortunately, in recent years, homicide is always in the news. The Ontario Government and police are working feverishly to contain the situation but the unfortunate situation continues. The disturbing news of the increase in gun violence week after week is the result of deep rooted causes that need to be addressed seriously. The gospel of Luke 2: 5152 (NKJV) referring to the childhood of the Lord Jesus reads, “Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” The passage ends with the revelation of the four important areas of the development of Jesus as a child which applies to every

child namely: mental, physical, social and spiritual development. The lack of the development of children in any of these areas can lead to the social problems we face today. Much as they try, civil institutions involved in child development would not succeed without parents assuming their primary responsibility of raising their children to be law abiding members of society. In Judeo-Christian teachings, parents are expected to raise their children to recognize God as the highest authority in life. Of course they are supposed to recognize the authority of their parents without which they becomes a law to themselves. The word of God has guideline for raising children to enable them develop to love God and people. Deuteronomy 6:67 states, “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” The book of Prov-

erb 22:6 reads, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” While we need to find quick solution to the problem of youth gun violence, it is equally important that Christian parents and our churches become more involved in sharing our faith in God with our children in regards to the sanctity of human life before they get out of hands. Proverbs 9:10 reads, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Job, a God-fearing parent would offer sacrifice (prayer) for his children for their spiritual welfareJob 1:5. These scriptures among many others indicate that parents have greater responsibility in

Christ Redeemer Ministries Inc. Are you in NEED OF PRAYERS? The solutions are here for all your problems: Bible says "Come unto me all ye that are heavy loaded .." Jesus Christ is your solution, the Anointed Man of God is here with you to pray over your problems, mention how big or great they are.

preventing youth from getting out of hands. It is also a fact t h a t there are other negative factors that make parenting very difficult; therefore, parents definitely need help. Church and parents must work together to help young people in our churches and communities. There are parents in our communities who need help in handling children who are being bombarded with tons of negative information every day. These can be helped through friendship evangelism by getting more involved in the lives of people. It is time we the ministers offer children and youth related programs that will keep the young people off the streets. Every year, our church organizes winter and summer camps, and end of the year youth programs which are open to the young people of our community. Last December about 200 youth were at the end of the year banquet and this year 60 of our young people participated in a just ended summer camp. The programs were heavily subsidized to enable as many young

people take part. I believe some churches are doing even more than what we are doing. And if we get more of our youth involved in wholesome activities, youth violence will be greatly reduced. The provincial government has taken steps to address youth problems and even made available millions of dollars to help organizations working with young people. However, there have been situations where families have been divided when a father who do not have the required immigration status but fathered several children over the years is finally deported leaving a mother with several children to maintain. The single parent has to work alone to support a large family. In the meantime the children may not have proper supervision with the absence of their father and may end up in the streets. I am not suggesting that the law of the land should not be enforced, however, at the end our nation suffers while a father who was used to our Canadian system had to leave to a place he may

have difficulty supporting himself let alone sending regular support to his wife and children. Another area of concern which I think contributes to youth problems in our society is the way some young people are prematurely separated from their parents. I sincerely appreciate the protection our government offers children at risk. It is sad to read of children who have been hurt or even killed by close relatives. However, it is equally sad that well meaning parent have had their children taken away from them on fabricated charges made against them by their own children in order for them to leave home and have their own way. Some of these eventually end up in the street and become liabilities to the society. I believe if civil institutions that handle family issues would seek the assistance of the various community leaders in handling such cases will save parents and the institutions the problem of handling children who want to take advantage of them. In conclusion, the problem before us requires the involvement of all of us to overcome it.

Around the Ghana Sports Scene GFA expresses sorrow over President Mills’ death The Ghana Football Association wishes to express its deep sorrow following the death of the country’s President John Evans Atta Mills. On behalf of the football family, we extend our condolences to his wife, his family and the people of Ghana for this big blow. This agonizing loss will be felt by all football-loving people of Ghana as President Mills was an ardent football fan. He served his country diligently in football as he was once the chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee and also a board chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak. When a country loses its leader there is no greater pain let alone the man who was the leader of the

country when Ghana won Africa’s first U-20 World Cup in 2009. President Mills was also a key supporter of the Black Stars as they reached the quarter-final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His deep interest in the game was once again demonstrated just last month when the floodlights went off during the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in Kumasi. He personally phoned the GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi to express his concern about the sudden failure of the floodlights during the game. Such is his contribution to the game in Ghana that the GFA is profoundly affected by President Mills’ sudden demise.

Accordingly as a sign of respect and in honour of the memory our departed President, the GFA has decided to postpone the final of this year’s MTN FA Cup final match between AshantiGold and New Edubiase which was scheduled to be played on Sunday. We have further directed all clubs in the country to wear black armbands during football games in the next one week. May God welcome this great servant of Ghana and give him the reward he deserves for his service. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Signed: Kwesi Nyantakyi President Ghana Football Association

CAF President Hayatou mourns Mills The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed shock at the death of President John Evans Atta Mills. President Mills passed away last Tuesday at the 37 Military Hospital, after taking ill. CAF President, Issa Hayatou in a statement copied to GNA Sports described the late President Mills as an astute sportsman while acknowledging his influence

in the development of Ghana sports. “It is with sadness that we have learnt of the untimely death of President Mills. CAF is saddened by the news and on behalf of the African football family; I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family, Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the people of Ghana. “President Mills has made a significant contribution to the shine of Ghana and

African football by extending the commitment of those who preceded him as head of the nation since Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1957. My thoughts and prayers are with all Ghanaians during this difficult period,” said Hayatou. The late President Mills had served in various capacities at Accra Hearts of Oak FC, the National Sports Council and the Ghana Olympic Committee, amongst others

Ghana nearly pulled out of Olympics The Minister of Youth and Sports, Clement Kofi Humado Thursday night revealed that Ghana was considered withdrawing from the London 2012 Olympic Games following the death of President Mills. President Mills died on Tuesday, three days before the opening ceremony of the games. Speaking at the residence of Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in London, Mr. Humado said they were in a quandary until President Mahama gave them the green light to participate

in the quadrennial sporting event. According to him, President Mahama assured the team of the government’s support in Team Ghana’s quest to make the nation proud. Mr. Humado said President Mahama rather urged Team Ghana to go all out and win laurels in honour of the fallen President J.E.A. Mills. On his part, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Prof. Kwaku Danso Boafo, encouraged the Ghanaian athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games to work hard to

raise the flag of Ghana aloft. The nine athletes and the officials were at the residence of the High Commission in London on Thursday night where they were officially introduced to the Ghanaian community. But the event took an entirely different twist as most of the Ghanaians turned up in Black and Red attires to mourn the demise of President Mills. Prof. Danso Boafo encouraged athletes not to allow the unfortunate news to blight their campaign.

FIFA appoints Nyantakyi as Match Commissioner at 2012 Olympics

Kwesi Nyantakyi Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi has been appointed as a Match Commissioner by FIFA at the Olympic Football Tourna-

ments London 2012. Kwesi Nyantakyi, who is a member of FIFA’s Organising Committee for the Olympics, is in the United Kingdom for the three-week event and will supervise the organisation of football matches for four group matches in both men’s and women’s competitions at his base in Coventry. Kwesi Nyantakyi will be on duty beginning July 25th in the women’s fix-

ture between Japan vs Canada. His next assignment in the women’s competition is the match involving Japan vs Sweden on July 28th. In men’s football, the GFA President will supervise the organisation of the matches between Belarus vs New Zealand on July 26th and the Korea Republic vs Switzerland game on July 29th.

Clottey ready for Black Stars leading role In-form striker Emmanuel Clottey says he can step into the plate to lead the attack of the Black Stars. The Berekum Chelsea attacker has been flawless in front of goal in this season’s Caf Champions League where he has scored an incredible 11 goals to propel the side to second position in Group A of Africa elite inter-club competition. He has continuously warmed the bench of the Black Stars but there are many who believe the 24year-old has proved his goal scoring instincts and deserve to land a starting role in coach Kwesi Appiah’s team for next month’s international

friendly against China and more crucially the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi. Ghana has only one recognized world-class striker in Asamoah Gyan and the former Odense BK forward want to fancy his chances of playing alongside the Al Ain attacker. “I am ready to play whenever I am given the

chance to prove myself,” Clottey told Accra-based Peace FM “It is the perogative of the coach to decide which player he prefers to start in a game but like I said I am always ready when the opportunity presents itself,” “ I have not had the chance to start but I am not bothered because the fact that you start does not mean you are automatically going to score,” “Everything is a matter of time I believe.” Clottey’s pace, skills, lethal strikes and goal scoring abilities have contributed in making him a powerful goal scoring brand on the African continent.

London 2012: First two world records broken at Games London 2012 has not had long to wait for its first world records, with the South Korean archery team setting two new landmarks at Lord’s. Im Dong-hyun, who is visually impaired, set an individual record in Friday’s ranking round. He also joined forces with Kim Bubmin and Oh Jinhyek to record a new best in the team event. South Korea’s archery team is regarded as the best in the world. They have won 16 gold medals since the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Dong-hyun, who won team golds at the past two

Games, broke his own 72arrow mark of 696 by three points. DongHe can barely read the big letters at the top of an optician’ s chart, aiming at a “yellow blob” in the target 70 metres away. Alongside Bubmin and Jin-hyek, Dong-hyun helped set a 216-arrow total of 2,087, eclipsing the previous world record by 18 points. Lord’s played host to the men’s individual ranking round on Friday morning and will hold the men’s team gold medal match on Saturday.

South Korea’s men are the reigning world champions and have won the Olympic team title four times. Meanwhile, spectators trying to watch the archery were turned away amid confusion over ticketing. The London 2012 website advertised the event’s preliminary rounds as “unticketed”, which some people interpreted as open to the public. But Olympic organisers said that they had always made it clear preliminary rounds were not open to spectators.
