LAA Starting Pitcher #31

Tyler Anderson limited the Rangers to one run and two hits over seven innings in the Angels’ 9-3 victory Friday.

Anderson gave up eight hard-hit balls tonight, yet just two proved troublesome. One was a homer off the bat of Jonah Heim. The other was a double. It’s kind of baffling how Anderson has a 2.72 ERA with weaker peripherals than teammates Reid Detmers (5.19 ERA) and Patrick Sandoval (5.00 ERA). If the Angels can get anything of value for him in trade, they really ought to go for it.

TEX Starting Pitcher #44

Andrew Heaney was pulled after giving up three runs — two earned — in 3 2/3 innings Friday against the Angels.

Heaney will almost certainly be pushed into middle relief if the Rangers ever happen to get all of their starters healthy, but it’s not happening this month. Heaney currently has an 0-5 record in spite of a 4.43 ERA and a 44/11 K/BB ratio over 44 2/3 innings in nine starts. He’s been particularly unlucky in terms of run support, and the Rangers are 1-8 when he pitches, compared to 22-15 the rest of the time.
Willie Calhoun

LAA Left Fielder #5

Willie Calhoun went 4-for-5 with an RBI against the Rangers on Friday.

Calhoun’s combination of solid exit velocities and excellent strikeout rates has never paid much in the way of dividends, but when it was least expected, he’s popped off with a .365/.382/.577 line in 55 plate appearances for the Angels this season. With limited home run power and zero speed, he still doesn’t figure to be very useful for fantasy purposes going forward. However, he might remain a perfectly solid DH for the Angels.
Nolan Schanuel

LAA First Baseman #18

Nolan Schanuel went 0-for-6 with three strikeouts from the leadoff spot Friday against the Angels.

We’re not sure what Schanuel is doing batting leadoff for the Angels at this point; yes, his approach is good, but he’s just not a major league hitter and he’s also a liability when he does reach base. It seems like the Angels ought to give Zach Neto an opportunity at the top of the order.
Cole Ragans

KC Starting Pitcher #55

Cole Ragans blanked the A’s for seven innings, allowing just two hits, in the Royals’ 6-2 win Friday.

It’s the first time this year that Ragans has completed seven innings, though it’s the third time he’s pitched at least six scoreless innings. He’s 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA and an excellent 64/19 K/BB in 56 innings. Up next is a home start versus the Tigers.
Mitch Spence

OAK Relief Pitcher #40

Mitch Spence allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings against the Royals in his first big-league start Friday.

Spence allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four. The Rule 5 pick definitely helped his chances of making more starts with his showing. We wouldn’t trust him in fantasy leagues, but he’s been perfectly solid in amassing a 3.90 ERA and a 26/8 K/BB in 30 innings to date.
Michael Massey

KC Second Baseman #19

Michael Massey finished 3-for-4 and hit a two-run homer versus the A’s on Friday.

Massey lifted his OPS from .633 to .708 tonight. That he’s walked just once in 85 plate appearances isn’t great, but his strikeout rate is down and his exit velocity numbers are fine. It’s doubtful he’ll be of use in shallow mixed leagues anytime soon, but he’s definitely doing enough to stick in the lineup.
Brett Harris

OAK Third Baseman #77

Brett Harris struck out all three times he was up against the Royals on Friday.

Harris hit two homers in his second big-league game on May 4, but he definitely hasn’t done much since: he’s currently at .128//314/.359 in 51 plate appearances. With Ryan Noda heating up in Triple-A and J.D. Davis, Abraham Toro and Tyler Nevin all capable of playing third, Harris might wind up getting sent down sometime soon.
Luis Matos

SF Center Fielder #29

Luis Matos drove in five runs and collected three hits in a 10-5 win Friday over the Rockies.

Matos has certainly looked the part since being recalled from the injured list, and Friday was (obviously) no exception. The 22-year-old doubled twice, and the five-RBI night gives him a streak of four-consecutive games with runs driven in. Matos failed in his time with the Giants in 2023, but it’s not a question of talent with the outfielder. He’s worth a speculative add in deeper redraft leagues.
Matt Chapman

SF Third Baseman #26

Matt Chapman doubled twice and scored three runs while driving in one in a win over the Rockies on Friday.

Chapman has gone through it for most of the 2024 season, but things have looked better — for the most part — the past week. The infielder is only hitting .218 over the first six weeks of the campaign, but this has been a streaky hitter for the majority of the campaign, and it’s certainly possible he’s entering a hot run right now.
