Land Acknowledgement

The YMCA of Niagara acknowledges that our programs and services are situated on treaty land. The Niagara Peninsula is steeped in the rich history of the First Nations such as the Hatiwendaronk, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

The land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.

Today this area continues to be the home of many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island including First Nations, Metis and Inuit, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work in this community on their territory. As an association, we recognize this rich history and strive to learn more about the origins of this land so that we can better understand our roles in preserving the vibrant stewardship of the lands on which we live.
