Nissan Safety Shield Concepts

Nissan Safety Shield: Pt 3: Protect

Nissan Responsive Technologies help you respond to potentially harmful situations. When a collision is unavoidable Nissan’s systems help protect passengers.

3. Protect

Nissan Advanced Air Bag System.  This system uses seat belt sensors and an occupant sensing system to inflane dual-stage supplemental front air bags, taking into consideration crash severity and seat belt use. Front seat-mounted and roof-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags move with the occupants, and help protect the outboard occupants’ heads in the event of side impact (respectively).

Active Head Restraints.  Front-seat Active Head Restraints help reduce the possibility of whiplash injuries to the front seat passengers by moving up and forward during rear-end impacts.

LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren).  This is just another way we are working to keep children safe. The system lets you secure LATCH-Compatible child restraints without having to use seat belts or a locking chip/clip.

Nissan Safety Shield: Pt 2: Respond

Nissan Responsive Technologies help you respond to potentially harmful situations.

2. Respond

Vehicle Dynamic Control.  If the Vehicle Dynamic Control detects sudden over or under steering, it reduces engine power and/or applies brake pressure to individual wheels to help keep you on your steered path.

Traction Control System.  TCS can sense drive-wheel spin and respond by reducing throttle, or by applying brake pressure to help maintain traction.

Anti-lock Braking System.  In panic-braking situations the ABS rapidly pumps the brakes, to help prevent wheel lockup and to help you maintain steering control.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution.  The EBD system sends extra force to the rear brakes when it senses additional weight in the back.

Nissan Safety Shield: Pt 1: Monitor

Nissan is committed to your safety and being a leader in the world of Auto Safety. The design and engineering of every vehicle we make takes into consideration our dedication to safety, which drives the development of Nissan Safety Shield Technologies.

Our Safety Shield Technology can be split into three categories: Monitor, Respond & Protect. Today we’re taking an indepth look at “Monitor”.

1. Monitor

Around View Monitor.  This feature gives you a bird’s-eye view of  your Nissan and displays on the LCD monitor, making parking & backing-up safer, and easier.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System.  Using an icon on the dash, Tire Pressure Monitoring System warns you when your tires aren’t properly inflated.

Although an older model, you can still see how much the TPMS helps when recognizing a flat tire, and while filling said flat tire!

Blind Spot Warning.  Indicators illuminate when the system detects a vehicle in your blind spot, and the system chimes a warning if the turn signal is activated while vehicle is in your blind spot!

RearView Monitor.  When backing up, the RearView Monitor helps you see what’s directly behind you.

Moving Object Detection.  When your Nissan detects something moving behind your vehicle while in reverse, it gives you both audio and visual alerts.

This video talks about the Around-View Monitor, but at 1:50 switches to Moving Object Detection

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of this article 🙂

Fall is on it’s way!

While it looks like we may be able to squeeze a few more weeks (or days) of summer out of Mother nature, now is the time to start preparing your car for the colder, winter months. Don’t be the person stuck on the side of the road without provisions, or even just stuck doing this stuff in the cold! Here are a few tips from North Island Nissan.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Replace your carpeted mats with rubber (or waterproof) mats.

  • Check & Replace windshield wipers if they are more than 6 months old, or not working properly.

  • Check windshield washer fluid & start using fluid wit hde-icer

  • Check radiator coolant level (if you aren’t sure how to do this safely take it into North Island Nissan’s service department!)

  • Check hoses for wear or leaks

  • Check all lights (headlights, brake lights, tail lights, signal lights) to ensure they are clean and working properly. As we get into the cooler months daylight also decreases making these lights even more important

We don’t often think about “Fall Safety Driving”, but it is a real thing! Remember that Halloween also falls into this season and almost every child in your town will be walking the streets at the most hazardous time of day!

Fall Safety Tips:

  • Remember that once the leaves start falling they can create a slip hazard on the road, especially on curves or wet surfaces.

  • Leaves can also hide potholes or bumps in the road

  • Don’t park on dry leaves – the heat from your exhaust system can ignite the leaves!

  • Watch for deer in the early morning and early evening – as well as other critters/pets

  • Slow down and remember it’s challenging driving at dusk during the Fall. It’s harder to see obstacles (such as children or pets). Remember to wear sunglasses and put your visor down. When the sun sets and visibility improves, remember to take off the glasses and raise the visor as that can create another hazard right there!

Like we said earlier, gather this stuff up and have it ready in your car for winter driving season, and save yourself from having to gather it all up during the first winter storm you have to drive in. Keep everything organized in a box in the back of your car or a clear container for optimum organization.

Fall/Winter Safety/Maintenance Supplies:

  • Ice Scraper with brush

  • Flashlight (with NEW batteries!)

  • Shovel (folding)

  • Road Salt
