WORKSHOP CONTENT In our workshops we put primary emphasis on seeing and feeling and on learning how to express effectively what you see and feel. We regard visual design as the craft or the language of visual expression and our hope for every participant is that she or he will become fluent, using design with the ease of speaking your first language. We strongly believe that, if you make photographs for yourself above everybody else, you will write your own story as clearly with pictures as you might with words. We also believe strongly that creativity resides in you, the photographer, not in the tools or techniques that you are using. Without your imagining, dreaming, and manipulation, tools and techniques can accomplish nothing. The person comes before the tools. The following books by Freeman and/or André are all useful support material: Photography and the Art of Seeing, Photographing the World Around You: A Visual Design Workshop, Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image, Embracing Creation, and Innovation. Workshops are for amateur or professional photographers. Our experience has consistently been that a mixed group functions best and learns the most. Each day there will be an illustrated instructional lecture on visual design and one on a photographic technique (with special attention given to techniques such as ICM and multiple exposures), field work with your instructors, and evaluation of your images. There will be a special program featuring students’ images on the last day of the workshop. While we believe the workshops must have definite structure in format and instructional content, we continually adapt programs to meet the needs and interests of participants and constantly encourage personal ways of seeing and expressing. To ensure that we can work effectively with everyone on a personal basis we limit enrolment to twelve persons per workshop.
INSTRUCTORS André Gallant is a freelance photographer specializing in imaginative travel, people, and photography around the world. He has several major books to his credit - three with Pierre Berton, and Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image co-authored with Freeman. André has recently self-published five hardcover books, Dreamscapes, Destinations, Expressionism, Inspiration and Innovation and has penned and photographed Photographing People At Home and Around the World for Key Porter Books. A contributor to Canadian Camera, André continually experiments with new visual approaches and techniques in both his professional and personal photography, and he generously shares his ideas and expertise – in either English or French. www.andregallant.com hotshot@nb.sympatico.ca
Freeman Patterson has been a freelance photographer and writer since 1965 and his contribution to the photographic medium is recognized around the world. He is the author of five best-selling instructional books on photography and visual design and eight other books, including The Garden, a collection of images and writing about his home at Shamper’s Bluff, New Brunswick. In 2013 the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Goose Lane Editions published FREEMAN PATTERSON: Embracing Creation, a major retrospective of Freeman’s career co-authored by Freeman and art curator Tom Smart. Freeman has conducted week-long workshops annually in Canada since 1973, in South Africa since 1984, from time to time in New Zealand since 1992, Isreal, France, and in many other countries. Freeman believes a sound knowledge of visual design is fundamental to clear visual expression and focuses on this in his illustrated lectures. He has received numerous national and international honours and awards for his photography and teaching, including the Order of Canada and the Order of New Brunswick. www.freemanpatterson.com

ST. MARTINS, NEW BRUNSWICK Our workshops will be hosted by St. Martins
Country Inn (www.stmartinscountryinn.ca)
in the village of St. Martins on the Bay of Fundy coast, east of
Saint John and the Saint John airport and right at the beginning
of the Fundy Trail. The bay has the world's highest tides, and there
will be dramatic changes in the oceanfront scenery twice a day.
Participants will need only to cross the road to reach the shore,
rocks, mosses, caves, and fishing boats.
St. Martins is approximately 38 kilometres east of the Saint John (not St. John), New Brunswick airport (YSJ). Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the workshop. You may wish to use a readily available taxi at the airport for the 20 minute drive. ACCOMMODATION Fee for the five-day/six-night course includes meals and accommodation in a private room with private bath. (Canadian funds) $2795 per person + HST (15%). If your dietary restrictions require the purchase of specialty items, an additional fee may be charged. Participants should arrive in time to meet the rest of the group on Sunday at 5:00pm and depart the following Saturday morning. We maintain a waiting list for each course once we have reached the maximum 12 students. If there is no space in either of your requested courses, you may want to place your name on this list. Please indicate how much notification time you require to be able to attend - the less time you require, the better your chance. Guests: Partners or friends of participants do not pay the tuition fee and should not expect to attend regular lectures or to receive field instruction. (Pets cannot be accommodated). Fee for meals and accommodation for the week for partners or friends will be $700. + HST (15%).
YOU MUST KNOW THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT THE WORKSHOP:
André and Freeman do not teach these basics, which you can
learn easily from your instruction manual, on line, or from other
photographers. They will concentrate on seeing, on the building blocks
of visual design and composition, and on techniques that will expand
your ability to create images that communicate information accurately
or express your feelings or moods effectively. They want to help you
communicate as fluently with visual images as you do with words.
Participants must bring their own laptop computer. A digital projector will be available. Be familiar with your camera and with the playback features that enable you to select, delete, and transfer images to your computer or flash drive. Ensure that you have your camera manual with you. Participants should be sufficiently adept with software such as Photoshop or Lightroom to adjust the contrast, brightness, hue, saturation, and sharpness of your images. You should also be able to resize your images and save them as jpegs to a flash drive. (Participants may shoot in RAW but we work in jpeg to speed up workflow.)
ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE/TRANSPORTATION Workshop begins with a meet and greet at 5:00pm on Sunday and concludes
with an evening program Friday night. Participants should
arrive by 5:00pm on Sunday and depart the following Saturday morning. CLOTHING Waterproof footwear is necessary for shooting at water’s
edge and for early mornings as there is often heavy dew. A hat,
gloves and warm jacket are essential for the autumn workshop. Bring
a good repellent if you are at all bothered by insects. EQUIPMENT
Tripod Rental: We will have four tripods available for rental. With all the weight restrictions with air travel, this will make it easier if you are flying. It will also give participants who do not own a sturdy tripod the opportunity to work with the tripod that both André and Freeman recommend. Rental fee is $50.+ HST (15%) for the week. As quantities are limited, please reserve when you register for a workshop.
TO REGISTER FOR A 2024 WORKSHOP We will take registrations on a first come/first served basis. Registrations are now open. Step 1: Send your completed, signed application form by e-mail indicating your first and second choice of workshop weeks. We require a $400 deposit (Canadian funds) payable the first week of January. Our preferred method is etransfer but we do accept VISA or MasterCard if that is your preferred method. Step 2: The balance of your workshop fees must be paid six weeks before your workshop begins to ensure your place is held. Cancellations: On cancellations up to six weeks prior to the beginning date of the workshop, we will refund your deposit less 50% for expenses. We will not refund on cancellations received six weeks or less prior to the beginning date of the workshop. We strongly suggest the purchase of cancellation insurance. Please do not register for a workshop unless you are able to stay for the entire period as an early departure seriously disrupts the spirit and fellowship of the workshop.
