Why organic pillows means better sleep

Sleep plays a significant impact on your health and well-being. As we spend a third of our life in bed, the material we sleep on matters.

There has been growing awareness about the negative impact of apparel and bedding on our health. Admittedly, the textile industry not only uses chemicals in the manufacture and treatment of fiber but also adds chemicals to the finished products to improve their appearance, warranty, and functionality. Some of the chemicals found in textiles have been linked to potential adverse health effects. For example, conventional pillows are made with non-organic textiles that are processed with flame retardants, off-gassing chemicals, synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and bleached with harsh dyeing chemicals. A toxic load of these harmful substances can cause irritation, allergies, and even serious health problems.

The traditional textile industry has a significant impact on our planet and garment workers’ lives - The environmental impacts of the textile industry include chemical pollution, high water and energy consumption, water contamination with plastic microfibers, and air pollution.  Textile workers in countries without strong labour and environmental safety laws often face dangerous health and safety conditions because of exposure to toxic substances.

We know; it can be overwhelming.

We started Organic Lifestyle when researching organic pillows for ourselves - We’ve done the research so you don’t have to, offering you peace of mind by sourcing healthier and sustainably made home goods, from small businesses based in Canada, India, and USA.

We offer a wide range of versatile organic pillows and we have developed our Guided Product Tour to help you find the perfect one based on your sleeping style and position, sensitivities, preferred firmness and thickness, and your ideal level of care and maintenance.

Our pillows are made with sustainably grown, GOTS certified organic cotton, wool, kapok fibers, buckwheat, and latex foam. These crops are grown without the use of any pesticides or other toxic chemicals, so they are safer for the consumers and the workers involved in harvesting. The materials in our organic pillows are sustainably harvested, fairly traded, and tailored to meet varying neck support from super soft to firm.

Not sure what is the difference between these materials?

Organic cotton vs conventional cotton. Conventional cotton is one of the most used fibers in textile. Typically genetically modified, machine picked, processed with pesticides and insecticides.

Organic cotton is primarily  handpicked to ensure that its fibers remain unbroken and long. That is why products made of organic cotton are softer and more durable while not exposed to pesticides - instead, they grow cotton amongst other crops that insects don’t like to deter infestation. Our organic cotton pillows provide medium-firm support for the neck, along with a wonderfully lush feel.

Kapok. Kapok is silky fiber harvested from the tropical ceiba tree. It can be described as bouncy, resilient, and lightweight. It retains its original state and adjusts to the shape of the head. Our kapok pillows are the softest, it feels like sleeping on a cloud (and are hypoallergenic!).

Buckwheat. Buckwheat pillows are made from the hulls of buckwheat seeds, providing firm next support. The heat from your body warms the hulls so it conforms to the contour of your neck and head relieving pressure and muscle tension. Our buckwheat pillow is one of our firmest pillows. It is malleable, durable, and hypoallergenic.

Wool. Wool is the textile obtained from sheep. Wool is naturally anti-bacterial, flame-resistant, and non-allergic. Our wool pillows are handmade with wool batting, then covered in a silky organic cotton sateen fabric. They are supportive yet soft and come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. Wool is an excellent temperature regulator -  It allows for air circulation - on a hot day, air continues to flow when your head is on the pillow, reducing that sticky feeling you get with non-breathable pillows. On a cool day, the wool pillow breathes and will retain body heat.

Natural latex foam. Natural latex foam is produced from rubber trees. Our latex foam pillows are resilient, extremely durable, antibacterial, hypoallergenic and dust resistant.

With the right pillow, we can help you alleviate pain and encourage the best, well-rested sleep ever.
