Sean & Jon's Ride Across Canada For Charity
Handling of Ballots by Candidates Endorsed by the Township Office
In politics there are rules and laws. And not all of the laws are cut and dry, however morals and common sense come into play.
In the 2010 municipal election held in East-Zorra Tavistock township there were some practices conducted by one of the incumbent candidates that resulted in a successful campaign. In 2010 East-Zorra Tavistock township used the “vote by mail” method of voting in order to increase voter turn out which successfully did bring out more voters. However, in the final days of the election, the successful incumbent candidate and his representatives called numerous voters to offer the service of carrying their vote to the township office. So the incumbent Candidate and his representatives handled several votes directly. This creates an opportunity for ballots to be lost or destroyed. Now I am not accusing the incumbent of doing so, but when the vote is in the possession of a Candidate, the opportunity is there and that’s just not right. Not only did the incumbent handle votes, but the township office actually directed voters to call the incumbent to bring their votes to the township office. These actions violate the Municipal elections act of 1996 section 89 and therefore should not be permitted. See the snippet of the act below:
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996
Section 89 Offences
     (j) delivers to the deputy returning officer to be placed in a ballot box a paper other than the ballot the deputy returning officer gave him or her;
     (k) takes a ballot away from the voting place;
     (l) at an election, takes, opens or otherwise deals with a ballot, a ballot box, or a book or package of ballots without having authority to do so;
Both after the 2010 election and when I submitted my nomination for the current election I asked that the Clerk of the township please direct all Candidates to halt this activity. However, the response from the township was unfortunate, see below:
Delivery of Return Envelopes
• Concerns surfaced after the 2010 Election that candidates delivered Return Envelopes to the Township Office on Voting Day. Several candidates asked the same question when they registered for the 2014 Election.
• There is nothing in the Township Election Policy & Procedures that precludes a candidate from delivering Return Envelopes during the day on Voting Day if they are requested to do so by a voter.
• The Township strives to run an Election that is fair and accessible to all voters. In staff’s opinion, how each voter and candidate handles such requests is at their own discretion. ”

Now, I ask you, is this a reasonable position for the Township to take? Is it acceptable that any Candidate handle anyone’s ballot other than their own? I think not, this opens up the opportunity for Candidates to mishandle a ballot. It is a complete violation of not only the The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 but it is unethical. Who’s to say that every one of those votes make it to the township office? It’s just not right!
As a Candidate for the position of Councillor Ward 1 in the coming Municipal election I am asking you send a request to the Municipality of East-Zorra Tavistock and ask that they do the right thing and instruct all Candidates to not conduct in delivery of voter ballots other than their own ballot.
Saturday’s KW Record

Check out the Community Page on Page 6, Section B in Saturday’s KW Record. It has a photo and quote from Jon regarding the Ride For Charity bicycle ride across BC and Alberta.

The quote reads: “The greatest treasure in all the world is our Children, they are our joy, our pride and our future. Thus we should focus our efforts on our children.”

Day 14 - Final Day of the first leg.
7: 30 - Wake up and pack up camp. Have our last fill of Oak Manor Oatmeal of the trip and it was just as spectacular as it was each time we had it. While we were consuming our breakfast, we heard the music of The Eagles coming from an open window of Jenner Public School. Someone was in there working but didn't seem to mind that we camped there.
9: 00 - Head over to the gas station to grab some snacks, something for lunch and some extra water for the ride to Empress, Alberta. We reviewed the route before entering the store and asked the girls at the counter what was in Buffalo and Blindloss(two towns on the map). She told us that neither community had any amenities other than a post office, a church and a community hall. Therefore, we decided to take all food and water that we would need for the final push to Empress.
10: 00 - Leave Jenner for Empress. As we travel along road 555, we found sign that warned of rattle snakes and so we were a little cautious of the road hoping not to see any live rattlers. We did see a number of road kill snakes along the roadside and one in the middle of the road that must have just been run over. Along the road we saw many free range cattle, we witnessed two deer that ran along beside us for a while and even spotted 6 Prong Horned Antelope.
12: 00 - Stop for some lunch at the half way point. Once we stop, the hot sun seemed to bake our skin and the mosquitoes attacked, so we stayed just long enough to eat our sandwiches and then carried on. We stopped a few times along the remainder of the ride to rest the legs a little.
3: 00 - Arrive in Empress, Alberta. Head to downtown where several very nice town women give us directions to the Saskatchewan sign. We bike to the border sign, all the while getting attacked by more Mosquitoes, where we take a number of photos, high five and carry on to check out the local campground where we can have our pick of the camp.
4: 00 - Arrive at the local pub where we proceed to have a hamburger, that proves to be of the same caliber as the burgers at the Nomad Food Co in Reverlstoke!!! If nothing else, Empress is a great burger destination. As we sat there at the pub, we shared our story with staff and patrons who bought us a few rounds, thanks for the beers people of Empress. We had a great time at the Empress hotel until Andy Taylor arrived.
8: 00 - Andy arrives and we leave for the campsite where we each have a spectacular steak for supper followed by a drumstick ice cream cone.... very tasty!!! We get another opportunity to have a shower and it was awesome. We then spend some time playing PS3 games in Andy's RV and then watch an entertaining sub titled horror movie.
1: 00 AM - Pack it in for the night...
What a journey!!!!

Yes, we feel like we’ve accomplished a lot!! We have experienced a lot in the last two weeks and definitely look forward to the future!!!

Well it is your final day for this lague of the journey, Was it harder or easier than expected??

Overall, we would have to say that it was easier than expected, although it was the most challenging thing we have ever done both physically and mentally. However, climbing those mountains was definitely tough, but we just put our heads down and pushed through it! Being away from our families for two weeks was definitely tougher than we thought it would be. Also, the praries were not the cake walk we thought that they would be, they were actually quite challenging, the head wind and seemingly endlessness of the praries were tough as were the constant and hot sun light. Basically, it was challenging but not as draining as expected!!!

Good morning guys!! Welcome to end of the road (well almost ...) ..... for this leg of the journey at least. It's been an amazing trip you've had. But I thought the trip was all backed up by training, being buff and in shape and healthy. You seem to be drinking a lot of beer ...... ?? LOL!! And we won't ask about the food ....... (other than than the very nutritional Oak Manor Farms Oatmeal, of course!) hi!! PhilW

It has been a fantastic journey! We have enjoyed a few brews along the way, but carbo loading is important. We had lots of yummy Okanagan fruit and a host of Skittles. We have met so many wonderful and amazing people along the way. When we could find it we had Indian food…so good. -ts a real sense of accompishment to have done this.
Lots of good dried fruit in the oatmeal
