Transports Quebec is changing road signs to make them easier to read.

The redesigned signs, part of a years-long project, will be bigger, with a retro-reflective film to make them easier to see at night.

Many of the familiar white-on-green signs that dot Quebec's highways are in need of replacing, according to Signotech president Rock Legault

"You have some, many panels here, that are 25 years old. The warranty of the sheeting is 10 to 15 years, so they are long overdue," said Legault.

While jurisdictions throughout North America have been experimenting with different fonts and typefaces, Transports Quebec has decided that bigger is better, and some of the new signs will be more than 11 metres wide and 5 metres high.

The first examples of the new signs, with white lettering on a blue background, have already been installed on Highway 20.

40,000 signs will be changed each year, at a cost of $8-10 million.
