NARFE president urges protection of postal services
NARFE
NARFE has joined with more than 60 national organizations to form "A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service." NARFE President Richard G. Thissen attended a press conference Feb. 12 in Washington, D.C., announcing the Alliance. "The U.S. Postal Service and postal jobs are threatened by interests that seek to undermine postal services and dismantle this great public institution," Thissen said. "In the face of these attacks, we are fighting to protect and enhance vibrant public postal services now – and for many generations to come." Thissen urges all NARFE members to join him in signing a pledge to protect the U.S. Postal Service. To sign, click here.

OPM monitoring recent Anthem database breach containing 80 million records

The Office of Personnel Management is monitoring whether the recently reported hacked database at Anthem Inc. has affected any of the 1.3 million federal employees that the health insurer covers. Nextgov reported that Anthem informed the federal agency that it shut down the affected network following the breach of the database that stored about 80 million records of customers and employees.

DHS shutdown, furloughs dominate subcommittee hearing

But, the one threat that dominated the discussion was whether the Homeland Security Department would be funded after Feb. 27. That's when the current continuing resolution that's funding the agency expires.

Postal unions, advocacy groups join forces to 'save' USPS

The American Postal Workers Union will join other labor and advocacy groups Feb. 12 to announce a new coalition designed to "save" the U.S. Postal Service from service cuts and efforts to privatize the mail system. The coalition of 63 religious coalitions, retiree organizations, educational and postal unions, lawmakers and progressive advocacy groups is calling itself "A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service."
