Dr. Smythe's work examined the defence policies of Canada and Australia. She highlighted a post-Cold War trend of using military forces to address non-traditional security threats, such as disaster relief. She demonstrated the significant, but often unrecognized implications this has had for the training and deployment of western military forces.
