International Open Data Day 2016

The open data community in Ottawa has grown significantly over the past several years. To continue to support the growing community, Open Data Ottawa is again organizing an event to celebrate International Open Data Day.

Where: 150 Elgin, Shopify, 6th flr

When: Saturday, March 5, 2016 - 1:30pm - 4:30pm

More: Visit our meetup page to learn more and register

This event is slightly different than those we’ve organized in the past. There will be a series of short presentation from different members of the open data community, followed by casual networking and discussions about open data.

Are you new to open data? This is the perfect opportunity to learn about what open data is, get a better understanding of what types of open data are available, and learn about different ways it’s being used by members of our community.

We hope you’ll join us to celebrate #opendataday!

The schedule of events will be posted on our meetup page.

A special thanks to Shopify for providing the venue for this event.

Discover what you can do with your research data

Do you have research data that you’re not sure what to do with? Do you have research data that you want to share and explore?

#HackCongress is a free event taking place on June 1st, 2015 at uOttawa.

This non-competitive Hackfest invites participants to explore or “hack” research data provided by invited digital humanities (DH) researchers. It will show what can be accomplished when research data is opened up for collaboration. Participants will enhance their skills and learn to use new tools to visualize data and work with digital assets. The event will also be an opportunity to meet other scholars from diverse fields and to learn about emerging common practices in DH. This full day event on June 1st will be punctuated by 30 to 60 minute presentations of research projects and workshops on tools available for use by participants. In addition to the research data made available by selected DH researchers, a list of open data sources and tools will be provided. Check back on this space as our program develops.

Experienced and novice hackers are welcome! No prior knowledge of DH techniques or tools is required, but curiosity and a desire to collaborate are essential!

21 February 2015

The open data community in Ottawa has grown significantly over the past several years. To continue to support the growing community, Open Data Ottawa has partnered with the University of Ottawa Library, the Treasury Board Secretariat, and other engaged community members to offer a space for those interested in collaborating on and learning about open data. Thanks to the generous contribution of Industry Canada, the weekend-long event will be at the Industry Canada Service Lab, located in the C.D. Howe Building at 235 Queen Street.

The location will function as a multi-purpose space. Part of the space at the Innovation Lab will be reserved for folks participating in CODE. If you would like to use this space to work on your project for the CODE competition, there is a separate registration form on the CODE website. Note that our HUB will be open for you to use starting on Friday night, while general festivities start on Saturday morning.

The remainder of the space is available for those who wish to come and learn about open data, benefit from the support of mentors and experts, and participate in mini workshops that will be scheduled throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.

Mentors will be on hand to show you how to find interesting open data and shape it into whatever you’d like it to be.

Whether you’d like to spend the whole weekend, a whole day, or just a few hours, join us at the Service Lab in downtown Ottawa to celebrate #opendataday!

January bookclub recap & International Open Data Day

We had another great meetup earlier this month at Shopify, with a number of great presentations:

  • Rob Davidson tried to predict the recent Ottawa Election using social data from Twitter. He has a very nicely presented presentation here.
  • Denis Carriere cleaned, crunched, and mapped out the Construction Permits data. Go take a look.
  • Trent Baur took the Swimming and Skating schedules made available by the city and made them accessible to the masses with two easy to use sites. Check out OttawaSwimming.com and OttawaSkating.com.
For next month, we are planning a large event to coincide for the International Open Data Day, which falls on Saturday, February 21st. This will supersede our usual Book Club event that usually happens on the first Wednesday of each month. More details about the Open Data Day event will be posted shortly. It looks like it is going to be very exciting. Because it’s a bigger event, we will not be picking a municipal dataset to focus on. But if you need an idea for something to work on, take a look at the Science and Technology Museum Open Data.

January Open Data Book Club

Open Data Book Club is a monthly event aimed at exploring open datasets that relate to the National Capital Region. If you are into open data, data journalism, statistics, data visualizations, or civic technology, join us on Wednesday, January 7th. Register here.

Cody’s Cafe (Shopify)
150 Elgin St
6th Floor
Ottawa, ON
[MAP]

Come hang out with fellow data-ists, hack on some data, and enjoy a set of short presentations related to the Construction, Demolition and Pool Enclosure Permit Data, the dataset the group decided to work on for January. This dataset contains some surprisingly interesting information related to the locations and values of the construction/demolition/pool enclosure permits that are issued by the city.

Interested in presenting something? We’d love to see what you can come up with. Please let us know so that we can make sure to set aside a bit of time for you!

Your presentation does not need to focus on the current month’s dataset. Past projects you’ve done are also welcome, we just ask you to make sure that it’s related to Open Data in the National Capital Region.

Hope to see you on Wednesday!

December open data book club

Come hang out with fellow dataists, hack on some data, and enjoy a set of short presentations on the recent Municipal Election Data, the dataset the group has elected to work on for December.

Interested in presenting something? We’d love to see what you can come up with. Everybody is given a short time-slot to present. Mash up the data with another dataset, or compare the data with all the other Ontario elections that happened in October.

Your presentation need not focus on the current month’s dataset. Past projects you’ve done are also welcome, we just ask you keep it Open Data related.
