Welcome to
AstronomyCalgary.com

In 2009, over 140 countries participated in the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), marking 400 years since
Galileo first looked through a telescope. Here in Calgary, IYA saw three organizations join together to present
hundreds of astronomy events in and around Calgary.

The collaboration continues as a legacy of IYA, with our joint website, AstronomyCalgary.com, presenting links
to the member websites and a common calendar of all public astronomy programs being offered around Calgary.

The University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) houses multiple research telescopes, including a 1.8-metre telescope, as large as any in Canada. The Observatory and its Visitor Centre serve as an astronomy resource for school children, teachers and community groups. The Observatory also offers monthly public Open Houses and other special event evenings.
The Calgary Centre of the RASC
is a club with over 300 amateur astronomers, with membership open to anyone with an interest in astronomy and stargazing. Their monthly meetings are open to the public. The Centre operates an observatory south of Calgary for member use, presents public stargazing events around the province, and stages the annual
Star-B-Q and Alberta Star Party.
TELUS Spark, the new science centre, incorporates five interactive exhibit galleries, a science demo/ video theatre, and the 240-seat HD Digital Dome theatre. The Dome features daily live planetarium star shows and full-dome science and nature movies projected with the state-of-the-art Digistar 5 system, making it Canada's most advanced planetarium theatre.
