Environmental Project Implementation.

Welcome to Adelantar Consulting.

You have found Adelantar, a company whose name literally means ‘to move forward’.  We are a progressive and inclusive company, and our team of humans brings more to the job than industry-leading engineering and consulting practices in waste management.  We’ll be the first to say that we know our garbage, and we’d be happy to help you with yours.

Who we are

Adelantar Consulting is a locally-owned, niche consultancy that was formed in 2006 with its world headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta.  If you reach out, you can be sure that we will be focused on two things: relationships – with our people and the people we work with; and projects – which are primarily in the field of industrial waste management and containment design.  It probably goes without saying that we strive for technical excellence, but even more central to who we are is excellence in consulting.  We accomplish this by approaching our relationships and projects with respect, creativity, trust, and humility.  This means we think (and re-think!), communicate, and collaborate within our group and with our clients as we work.

Over time our team has stabilized at around 12 to 15 people – primarily engineers and support staff – and this helps us to maintain personal connections with each other; we spend about a third of our waking hours together after all.  Even though we are few in numbers, we are diverse, and we view this diversity as strength.  We value humans as individuals, encouraging expression of self while respecting privacy.

How We Work

At Adelantar, we acknowledge that people are humans first.  Every day, our team brings to work a wide range of technical and non-technical skills – and much like the puzzles in our break room, we find ways to fit together to make the big picture come to life. To manage swells in our work, we maintain strong ties with external providers that routinely support us on projects and provide additional capacity when needed.

Our approach to work is collaborative, with each person working to their highest and best use as much as possible.  We hold each other accountable and meet our commitments, and we do this with a high level of support, ongoing mentoring, and autonomy.  We invest in our team in the form of time off, professional development opportunities, and internal training.

Adelantar operates a respectful workplace in which: all people are treated with dignity and respect; difference is acknowledged and valued; communication is open and civil; conflict is addressed early; and there is a culture of accountability and cooperation.

What we do

We like to believe that most of what we do is think and find helpful ways to communicate our thinking to others.  This might be strategic thinking, or engineering design thinking.  It might be complex and creative problem solving thinking, or regulatory thinking.  It will always include careful consideration of the risks and attributes of potential options.  But no matter how we slice it, as consultants, it’s no use solving problems if we are not able to effectively communicate our findings to clients, regulators, or the public, so you’ll often find us writing, presenting, discussing, or drawing our thinking so that we can get the proper message to where it needs to go.

At Adelantar, we spend a lot of time thinking and communicating about waste, where it might go, and what happens once it’s there.  We are experienced in siting landfills and industrial facilities, preparing regulatory applications, developing preliminary and detailed designs for landfills and ponds, and overseeing construction.  In fact, we consider ourselves to be experts in waste management with over 100 years of joint experience in industrial containment to draw upon.

Engineering

At Adelantar, we have a team experienced in landfill and containment engineering.  This includes the design of containment structures, landfills, ponds, surface water systems, site roads, and secondary containment facilities.  We routinely prepare conceptual layouts, volume calculations, preliminary design work to support applications for regulatory authorizations, detailed design drawings and specifications for tender, and development and implementation of construction quality assurance and quality control programs.

Facility Siting

At Adelantar, we support clients in selecting the right location for facility development.  This includes the identification of regulatory constraints, broad screening and constraint mapping, coordination of preliminary and detailed field investigations, evaluation of the site relative to regulatory and technical standards, and site selection recommendations.

Regulatory

Assisting clients in meeting environmental legislation in Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan is routine work for us.  In addition, we understand the municipal regulatory framework.  We regularly work with clients to develop project-specific regulatory strategies, prepare routine and event-specific regulatory reports, and provide advice on regulatory aspects to meet client objectives.  We hold strong working relationships with key regulators in Alberta and B.C. and have been involved in the development of key regulatory standards and policies that guide waste management in Alberta.

Construction Support

Core to our work is overseeing the construction of new containment works.  We offer complete construction support services including identification and evaluation of potential procurement options, identification of qualified contractors, release of tender or RFP documents and evaluation of bids or proposals, construction supervision, quality assurance and quality control for lining and leachate collection systems, contract administration, and as-built reporting.

Waste Management

Waste management is our core work and we are familiar with all aspects related to waste. From landfills to industrial liquids storage, incinerators to compost pads, we take pride in our niche work. By approach waste management challenges with consideration for options, risk, feasibility and costs, we can support clients in implementing their projects.
