Located in eastern Canada in the west-central portion of the province along the St. John River, Fredericton, NB is the capital city of the Canadian province of New Brunswick and a college and government town. Fredericton, New Brunswick is named after Frederick, son of King George III, and has been the capital of New Brunswick since 1785. As a provincial capital and one of the main urban centres in New Brunswick, Fredericton's economy is greatly tied to the public sector, however, the city also contains a growing commercial and IT sector. Fredericton is regarded as an important and vibrant cultural, artistic, administrative and educational centre for the province, home to the University of New Brunswick, which is noted to be Canada's first university, and St. Thomas University. Fredericton is known for its annual Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, which attracts many regional and international artists, as well as tourists and art lovers alike. The city is home to a wide range of beautiful architectural styles, ranging from Victorian to modern, with over 12 National Historic Sites of Canada featured. Fredericton has a beautiful network of over 25 multi-use trails spanning over 85 km on both sides of the Nashwaak and Saint John Rivers for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the local nature and wildlife.
