A lunch celebration to honor our Lao Seniors in BC. April 7th, 2024

Remember the sky that you were born under,

know each of the star’s stories.

Remember the moon, know who she is.

Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the

strongest point of time. Remember sundown

and the giving away to night.

Remember your birth, how your mother struggled

to give you form and breath. You are evidence of

her life, and her mother’s, and hers.

Remember your father. He is your life, also.

Remember the earth whose skin you are:

red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth

brown earth, we are earth.

Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their

tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,

listen to them. They are alive poems.

Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the

origin of this universe.

Remember you are all people and all people

are you.

Remember you are this universe and this

universe is you.

Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.

Remember language comes from this.

Remember the dance language is, that life is.

Remember.

We are excited to work with South East Asian groups to build a Senior Care Centre for our elders:

Cambodian, Laos, and Vietnamese communities are teaming up to petition for the South East Asian Senior Care Centre where our seniors can have Laos language staff, food, or cultural activities to care for their needs.

When one senior gets a visit, the whole VILLAGE gets a visit.

Soon: Please fill out a petition form

to the Health Minister

We are excited to work with South East Asian

groups to build a Senior Care Centre for our elders:

To the (SEA) South East Asian communities (Laos, Cambodian, Vietnamese) leaders:

Elders in Canada is growing quickly, over 10% of the Canadian population. Of deep concerns to every SEA (Laos, Cambodian, Vietnamese) Canadian family, is elder health care. Everyone in the community have heard, known a family who had elders with needs for care and support in their old age, some of which may have exceeded the capabilities and resources of family members.

a-Many of these SEA Canadians elders have a profound social need to be around each others, many are currently or will be encountering multiple. social, financial, environmental, and health difficulties. Their families are navigating the complexities of elder healthcare systems in BC.

b-There are great difficulties to locate and be part of in short supply public elder healthcare centre. Often after an an accident, a hospitalization, many SEA Canadian elders have found themselves without a support elder healthcare centre, then scattered in random inappropriate care centres. They suffered immensely: with little linguistic asset, acute social, cultural isolation, they were alienated, turned deaf and mute in neglect.

c-Staffs of the Elder healthcare centres, had great difficulties to support elders with languages barriers, customs and practices. Care and medication communications and contacts are difficult or impossible. Misunderstanding, over medication, over sedation, overuse of psychotic drugs add to family members griefs.

For many such reasons, many ethnic Canadian communities have elder healthcare centre with emphasis on appropriate cultural environment (Chinese, Indian, Korean...etc).

Combined together, the SEA communities has over 50000+ members. It is with great anguish, we do not, have such a non exclusive secular, multicultural SEA elder healthcare centre in British Colombia. There is a pressing need to have such elder healthcare centre, with strong cultural, ethnic nuances and sensitivities

In 2022, many Vietnamese Canadian community leaders have met to discuss and define the needs for such non exclusive, secular, multicultural elder healthcare centre n the Greater Vancouver – Lower Mainland. Petitions were made, the result were overwhelming and indicated that the needs are pressing and widespread.

Thanks to the proximity of our SEA original countries, we mutually have shared and deep knowledge of SEA culture and customs. In addition, there is a need for an economically optimum elder healthcare care facility (80+ beds), we are looking to ask the BC Government to help us with a shared SEA facility, so our elders can have choices of cultural sensitive sections with the sensitive SEA cultural and linguistic staffs, with familiarity with each of our SEA unique customs and traditions.

I had a discussion about the need to support the SEA elders in our communities with the Minister of Health, these elders have unfulfilled and pressing needs. The Hon. Adrian Dix, Minister of Health is very interested to meet with the leaders of the SEA Community to get more details about the requirements, the needs and other details so he can help with this dossier.

  • We are inviting the leaders of the Laos and Cambodian communities to join force with the Vietnamese communities to meet with the Minister of Health to present the needs, the requirements, the findings, the wishes of these SEA Canadians elders and other community needs, and let him tell us what the BC government can do.
  • This is a once in a lifetime unique opportunity for us to present a unified request to the government. We are looking toward the presence of leaders of the Laos, Cambodian and Vietnamese Community Associations, leaders of religious organization of multiple denomination.

The meeting will be in the middle of December 2023 (day and time to be announced) at a suitable location, including at the Minister of Health’s office in Vancouver.
