Helene Minishka Bursary 2018

In 2017, we gave our first bursary to a graduating student of Ballenas High School, and this year we’ve given it a name. The Helene Minishka $500. Bursary will be given to a graduating student with a focus and skill on Apple technology, Helene was the PQMug’s president for a decade, and she spent many selfless hours maintaining and championing our group. With respect for Helene, and this year’s winner.

Desktop Productivity For Mac – A Presentation by Robbin Johnson

Screen Shot 2018-02-19 at 4.41.22 PMThis is the PDF resource provided by Robbin after his fantastic presentation Feb 12 on the topic of Desktop Productivity.  It featured lessons on effective use of Spotlight, organizing Favorites in Safari, and using Safari’s Reader View to increase your productivity on your Mac and save you time and aggravation. My favourite takeaway was on using snippets in keyboard preferences to autofill longer pieces of text, View the 122 page resource Robbin provided here.Desktop Productivity – Mac

PQMug Ballenas Technology Bursary

President of the PQMug, Dan LaRocque, presents the first annual Mac Users Bursary to graduating student, Madison Poole

We presented our first annual bursary to a graduating Ballenas High School student with a future in technology and design. On June 28th, we presented the award to Madison Poole, who as the school official described, “Our scholarship committee met last night, and the consensus was that Madison Poole would be an outstanding choice for the Mac Users Bursary. Madison is a lovely young lady with a 96% average (second highest in her grad class) and is proceeding to a 4 year degree in graphic design through Kwanten University. She is very active in both the community and school through dance, theatre, and various volunteer activities.” Congratulations and best of luck, Madison.

Did you think you were the only one who used a Macintosh in Parksville or Qualicum Beach area? Think again! Why else do those MacLife and MacWorld magazines disappear so quickly from the Save On Foods magazine rack?! Take heart – there are more of us than you know!

Who Are We?

The Parksville/Qualicum Macintosh Users Group is a friendly group of people who are interested in Macintosh computers and Apple IOS devices (iPhones and iPads). Some of us know little or nothing about Macintosh, and may not even own a computer. Some of us know quite a lot, but we are all here to share our ideas and knowledge, and to provide support for one another.

Purposes of the Group

The purposes of our group are:

  1. •to provide a forum for Mac and IOS Device Users
  2. •to share problem-solving tips and techniques
  3. •to co-operate with other Mac User Groups
  4. •to liaise with other sources of computer information
  5. •to provide assistance to fellow members wherever possible
  6. •to demonstrate new products
  7. •to educate the public about the Apple Macintosh, or similar computer, and related computer products

Why Macintosh?

Why use Macintosh? Those of us who are dedicated Macintosh users already know the answer. For those who don’t, here are just a few of the many reasons.

Macintosh is:

  1. ◦extremely stable. Mac users hardly ever experience crashes or freezes
  2. ◦amazingly easy to learn, and very user-friendly (See http://www.apple.com/easier/for lots of specific examples)
  3. ◦able to run the same popular programs that most people run on other systems: MS Word, Excel, Photoshop, and many more
  4. ◦forward thinking. The people at Apple don’t just follow trends – they make them! Look at the radical design of the new iMac shown below as just one example:

Meetings:

We meet once a month on the second Tuesday of the month, at the Forum Room, Malaspina College.(100 Jensen Ave E, Parksville). Meetings start at 7:00 pm and usually finish up around 9:00 pm.

Meetings are intended to be informative. We often have demonstrations of new hardware or software; frequently there are presentations, with helpful tips, and lots of time for informal discussions with other members. Guests and new members are always more than welcome!
