Zero Emission Hydrogen Train

Alstom has today presented its zero-emission train at InnoTrans, the railway industry’s largest trade fair, which takes place in Berlin from 20 to 23 September 2016.

Despite numerous electrification projects in several countries, a significant part of Europe’s rail network will remain non-electrified in the long term. In many countries, the number of diesel trains in circulation is still high – more than 4,000 cars in Germany, for instance.

Coradia iLint is a new CO2-emission-free regional train and alternative to diesel power. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, its only emission being steam and condensed water while operating with a low level of noise. Alstom is among the first railway manufacturers in the world to develop a passenger train based on such a technology. To make the deployment of the Coradia iLint as simple as possible for operators, Alstom offers a complete package, consisting of the train and maintenance, as well as also the whole hydrogen infrastructure out of one hand thanks to help from partners.

This launch follows the Letters-of-Intent signed in 2014 with the German Landers of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, and the Public Transportation Authorities of Hesse for the use of a new generation of emission-free train equipped with fuel cell drive.

Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation which will complete its Coradia range of regional trains. It shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years,” declared Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Alstom Chairman and CEO.

Alstom’s Coradia range of modular regional trains has a proven service track record spanning more than 16 years. Over 2,400 trains have been sold around the world and demonstrate a high availability rate. Coradia iLint is based on the service-proven diesel train Coradia Lint 54. It will be manufactured in Salzgitter, Alstom’s largest site.

In addition, at the Alstom booth, you can embark on a journey to discover how the company masters all phases of its customers’ railway projects – designing, building, operating & maintaining and renewing – through tangible examples. The company will for instance demonstrate the modularity of its Avelia high speed range through a hands-on configurator. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience a control centre, see how an AGV is repaired, and discover how train renovation works.

Energy Storage Canada

ENERGY STORAGE ONTARIO TO REBRAND AS ENERGY STORAGE CANADA

Industry Association to Offer New Platform, Expanded Value to Members

ENERGY STORAGE ONTARIO TO REBRAND AS ENERGY STORAGE CANADA

Toronto, September 28, 2016 – Energy Storage Ontario (ESO) today announced it is rebranding to become Energy Storage Canada – a move that reflects the industry association’s expanded advocacy and engagement at the federal level on behalf of members.

The change provides a stronger platform to build the market for energy storage across Canada to achieve multiple benefits: improve the flexibility and resiliency of the power grid for electricity system operators and customers, offer a proven channel for federal and provincial climate change initiatives, and drive economic development and innovation.

“Rebranding as Energy Storage Canada reflects the growing interest and momentum in the energy storage industry across the country,” says Patricia Phillips, Executive Director.  “We need to capitalize on the opportunities in order to realize the economic and environmental value of energy storage on a broader scale for utilities, businesses and residential customers.”

Energy storage adds value at all points in the energy system. It can increase the value of the energy produced by other sources and adds capacity value to the system. It can act as a load and as a generator and provide a range of balancing services both short-term and long-term such as capacity and congestion management and ancillary services. It allows for the deferral of costly transmission and distribution infrastructure investments. And storage can help consumers manage energy in their own homes.

As Energy Storage Canada, the association will continue to focus on expanding the energy storage infrastructure in Ontario, a leading jurisdiction for energy storage in North America.   The association will also leverage the strength of its membership of technology providers, project developers, power generators, local electricity distribution companies, and NGOs to advocate for regulatory changes to open other storage markets in Canada.

The new website address is http://www.energystoragecanada.org

Federal engagement activity will build on achievements made by Energy Storage Ontario since 2013. In Ontario, the association has made energy storage a key focus for policy makers by driving awareness about the value energy storage delivers, working to create a competitive market, promoting economic development, and ensuring regulatory fairness. Among other successes, the association was instrumental in advocating for a 50MW energy storage procurement in the province’s 2013 Long-term Energy Plan.

Energy Storage Canada (ESC) is the voice of leadership in energy storage in Canada and represents the full supply chain of energy storage. ESC focuses on advancing opportunities and building the market for energy storage through advocacy, knowledge-sharing, networking and stakeholder education.

Why a Hydrail Conference ?

The challenges and opportunities converge here and now!

  • Ontario is planning to electrify key commuter rail corridors in order to reduce GHG emissions, to avoid the cost of diesel fuel, to improve traction performance, to make use of local electricity resources and to improve urban air quality.
  • This transformation might be achieved faster and cheaper if conventional ‘wired’ electrification is replaced by on-board fuel cells, electrolytic hydrogen, ultra capacitors and Li-ion batteries
  • Using stored electricity as hydrogen or in advanced batteries allows the harvesting of inexpensive off-peak electricity with a low or zero emission profile
  • Renewable energy generated when there is  a surplus power capacity (at night) can be re-directed to rail transportation needs during the day
  • Ontario hosts a growing sector of new technology developers, integrators and entrepreneurs that are driving the commercialization and deployment of energy storage, smart grid and green energy transportation technologies
