Parc National de la Gaspesie Day 3 and on

This was our final day on the Jacques Cartier trail. We knew that we didn’t have too bad a hike today so, as always we took our sweet time packing up and getting ready to go. We were staying in a cabin in the park also, so there was no need to rush out and drive somewhere later. I wish all of our hiking trips could be this relaxed.  It’s usually much more hectic as we tend to always have…

Parc National de la Gaspesie Day 2

Our second day started much more relaxed than our first day.  We knew that our hike that day would be approximately 9km in length and that it would generally track down hill, so we took our time leaving the cabin.  We were actually the last ones to leave (and also the last ones to make it the night before – we like to enjoy ourselves and take our time on our hikes – or we’re just very slow).  Most of…

Parc National de la Gaspesie Day 1

So, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted.  I’ve just been lazy.  I’m going a bit out of order and writing about our most recent trip (hopefully the missing trips will have posts shortly).  On to our latest trip. This past Canada Day week we decided to take a trip out to Montreal, Quebec City and the Parc National de la Gaspesie.  We spent a day in Montreal and a day in Quebec City to enjoy the poutine and smoked meat…

MacGregor Point Day 2

Day 2 of our trip to MacGregor Point was mostly spent on the Old Shore Road Trail. It was actually a very easy trail to hike. It is actually meant to be a bike trail as well, so it’s very well formed. It takes you along the coast of Lake Huron and runs for quite a distance. We didn’t hike the entire trail, we went about 4km one way and then back to our campsite. The main feature of the…

MacGregor Point Day 1

Over the Easter long weekend we went up to MacGregor Point Provincial park.  This park is just south west of Bruce Peninsula.  It’s actually open year round and is one of the few parks open this early in the year.  We’d never been so we decided it would be nice to try out spring camping – we’ve now managed to camp in all 4 seasons. Its not too far away so we drove up on the Friday morning and got…

Oak Ridges Trail (Stouffville – Whitechurch)

A few weeks ago, when we had some oddly warm weather, we decided to go for a hike on a section of the Oak Ridges Trail. Part of the trail actually runs just south of where we live but we decided to do a longer track a little north east of us. We also wanted to go on a longer hike as we are planning a couple of backpacking trips later this year (posts to come) that include some longer…

Algonquin Winter Camping

After our trip to Arrowhead we decided that we were progressing and wanted to try out winter camping.  We asked my friends and they agreed to join us.  So the four of us planned our trip out to Algonquin.  At first they had thought that we had planned on renting a yurt for our first foray into winter camping, but my wife had decided that she wanted to go all out and we were going to use tents.  Yes, we…

Arrowhead Provincial Park

We went to Arrowhead Provincial Park in October of last year.  It was quite a while ago, but this was our first real “adventure.”  It was our first foray into a different kind of camping, one where we did not need to pack everything but the kitchen sink.  Also it was our first camping trip on our own.  The other reason for this trip was to try out a bunch of equipment we has recently purchased after deciding to do…

Introductions…

As a bit of an introduction, my wife and I have been getting more and more into camping and backpacking over the last few years.  We have always enjoyed camping and it is something we have done with friends at least once or twice per summer for the past few years.  However until recently its always been about “high maintenance” car camping.  We always needed a large tent, lots of extra clothes, big sleeping mats, regular size pillows, etc.  We…
