Your Baby must SURVIVE and THRIVE. Survival needs immediate skin-to-skin contact and then Zero Separation.
Thriving requires nurturescience, which Dr.Bergman has presented as a summary of every baby’s best interests.

Why become a Kangaroula?

Our “health routines” around birth support a new mother.
But what does the baby really need?

Mother! Her body warmth, her breastmilk, her voice, her love.
A kangaroula learns to support the mother’s and baby’s essential needs, and setting up the family for good lifelong health.

This is NURTURESCIENCE. Make a difference!

KANGAROO
MOTHER
CARE

– IS FOR ALL PRETERM AND

FULLTERM BABIES

KMC has 3 parts:

The more skin-to-skin contact between the baby’s front and the mother’s chest, the better. For comfort a small nappy is fine, and for warmth a cap may be used. Skin-to-skin contact should ideally start at birth, but is helpful at any time. It should ideally be continuous day and night, but even shorter periods are still helpful.

Direct suckling by the baby from the breasts is all that is needed for most mothers and babies.  For very premature babies, expressing milk and addition of some essential nutrients may be needed.

Whatever is needed for the medical, emotional, psychological and physical well being of mother and baby is provided to them, without separating them. This might mean adding ultramodern equipment if available, or purely intense psychological support in contexts with no resources. It can even mean going home very early.

The most important part is

SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT

Skin-to-skin contact is the RIGHT PLACE for care.

Skin-to-skin contact must begin  immediately after birth.

Physiological cord clamping helps and adds life-saving support.

Skin-to-skin contact should be continuous day and night, extra family members may be needed.
Safe technique is important.

Even the smallest and sickest are encouraged to suckle, and given expressed colostrum.

CARE DOES NOT CHANGE!
However all care is provided in skin-to-skin contact, with brief separation only for bigger or difficult procedures.

Skin-to-skin contact with zero separation leads to RESILIENCE.

Separation leads to toxic stress.

This disrupts developing brain architecture.

Instead of resilience there will high risk for  life-long vulnerability.

Every child's best interest:
ZERO SEPARATION

NURTURESCIENCE

Does nurture need its own science?

To some the word nurturescience is an oxymoron, nurture and science do not fit together. Neuroscience developed in the (erroneous) belief in maternal-infant separation. Nurturescience restores the fundamental missing relationship, providing a solid science for parenting, emotional connection and love.

NURTURESCIENCE
ABSOLUTELY NEEDS ITS OWN SCIENCE!

NURTURESCIENCE
IMPROVES
NEONATAL
OUTCOMES
(NINO)

NINO is about a new way of being born!

NINO strives to improve the birth experience for the mother, but even more specifically for the baby, focusing on a new and better understanding of  the needs of the baby.

KANGAROULA

- the embodiment of nurturescience

A doula focuses on the mother’s needs during labour and birth. A Kangaroula does this also, but primarily advocates for the baby during labour, birth and the first 1000 minutes of life.

The kangaroula may have additional training in skin-to-skin contact (Kangaroo Mother Care), hence kangaroo + doula = kangaroula!

OUR VISION

A world in which every baby at birth stays in skin-to-skin contact with mother or parent, and can begin emotional connection and breastfeeding naturally, ensuring resilience and trusting relationships for a better society.

Our aim is to promote the spread and implementation of Skin-to-Skin Contact from  birth, as the standard place of care for all newborn babies, both premature and full term.
