WHO ARE WE?

The WCIDTA is a non-profit society, comprised of registered teachers (TCRG) and adjudicators (ADCRG), who are members of An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG), the governing body of Irish Dancing, as well as the Irish Dancing Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA).

The WCIDTA is responsible for the administration and regulation of Irish Dancing in this region, and its members meet regularly to ensure the quality of competitive Irish dancing standards and regulations in Western Canada. In order to participate in Irish Dancing competitions, you must be under the tutelage of a WCIDTA teacher. A complete listing of all schools and their registered teachers is available under Teachers & Schools.

Why Irish Dancing?

Irish dancing was born in Ireland, but its infectious rhythms, exciting movements and the welcoming sense of community draws dancers from every country in the world.

Irish Dancing culture in Western Canada is alive and well, and our region’s dancers have won all major championships, including World Irish Dancing Championships and All-Ireland Irish Dancing Championships.

Irish Dancing is a fun and exciting activity for all age groups. From community Ceili classes, to competitive solo dancing schools, there is something for everyone.

Dancers learn basic traditional moves, as well as modern choreography. There are opportunities at most schools for performance, competition, travel, and above all, great life skills and lifelong friendships. The pop culture popularity of Irish Dancing was born when shows like “Riverdance” and “Lord of the Dance” entertained millions of spectators, and it’s hard not to fall in love with the music and the movement!
