MESSAGE FROM REVEREND IRENE TY
At an Earth Sunday service in 2023, people were asked to write down on green slips of paper “Here’s what I commit to do”. How did you make out with your commitment?
Our United Church’s New Creed calls us “to live with respect in Creation”. This Sunday we will celebrate Earth Sunday. The Green Team will inspire us with action ideas to care for our earth.
This Sunday’s scripture reading is from John 15: 1-8 “5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” Jesus calls us as his disciples to abide in him, to find shelter in him, and to stay connected to him. Let us strengthen our relationship with God and with one another and with the earth. Mother Earth nurtures and feeds us all the time.

THE BLANKET EXERCISE - Islington United Church on April 27th, 2024
The blanket exercise is an interactive educational program that teaches the history of colonization in Canada. Led by KAIROS Canada, the program was created in response to the 1996 report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. It has been used as a teaching tool across Canada thousands of times.
The Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies. The goal is to build a shared understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through the periods of pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance.
Participants are actively involved as they step on blankets that represent the land, and step into the role of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples.
By allowing participants to engage on emotional and intellectual levels, the blanket exercise serves to both educate and increase empathy.
This is an adults-only event happening at Islington United Church on April 27th from 9:30am - 12:30pm, and advance registration is required. As space is limited, please register early to avoid disappointment.
